Fuel Pump Problems

Something is killing fuel pumps on my 2001 Outback (310hp, carburetor). The first symptom is the engine hesitating when starting out, but it will recover and continue on as if nothing happened. The second symptom is the engine will die when starting out. It will refire and run as if all is fine. The final result is the engine dies or will not start, with the problem being the fuel pump is no longer working. Fuel pump life is around 40 engine hours. The dealers can not find a problem except that it need a new fuel pump. This is too expensive to keep replacing. Any thoughts?

Fuel pumps are simple contraptions,

1. They pump a liquid
2. Said liquid cools it.
3. They are electric motors.
4. They are designed for a specific voltage and Amperage.

Id be looking at your power supply, if the voltage is too high or the amperage is to high your possible burning it out electrically, this would explain the multiple pumps with the same problem.

I would change out the anti siphon valve at the tank, and ensure there is no blockage of the tube going into the tank. Pump might have to be working way too hard to pull fuel.

I would also check the voltage to the pump.

Tank venting too. If air can't get in it's hard to pull liquid out. Good luck!
