View Full Version : The Official (unofficial) Tow Vehicle Thread...

Just wondering what you guys tow with. I know I've seen people post in different threads what they get to the lake with, thought it would be cool to have a thread dedicated to the tow vehicles.

Currently I have to use my dad's Chrysler Minivan to tow the boat, which isn't too bad since I only transport it a few times a year. I'm actually looking at buying a new vehicle right now, probably going to get a Dodge Nitro.

Pics of the boat in-transit;

(On the way to Lake Huron, Grand Bend Canada)

I was looking at a Nitro that matched the boat (bright blue) but the dealer sold it, and the color isn't made any more. Now I'm looking at black (my standard color choice) or white.

Unfortunately I don't think the CRX would be up for towing- infact it has a trailer of its own, haha. Although the coil-over suspension has 10k rate springs, so it probably wouldn't sag if I did hook a trailer up to it!

so far no problems, just drive it out-looks worse than it is and still have not used the 4x4. but we have been getting rain the last 5 days and is to rain all thru memorial day weekend and that could make it worse cause the lake will not come up high enough to float the boat over the sandbar my truck is pictured on.

Moombadaze might have a short ramp and deep water...

moombadaze
05-31-2009, 07:34 PM
we had a great ramp, but what has happened is that the beach has invaded the ramp- i bet that there is at least 5 to 6 feet of sand on top of the end of the ramp now, its a giant level sand bar that is probly about 40-50 feet long right now that I back out over-so if the water comes up about 6" I could end up with lake water in the truck when the door is open.

Ed-would be just like using your private ramp right now.

Razzman
06-01-2009, 09:00 AM
It's even worse for us out here, most ramps are hundreds of feet long at an average 20 degree slope, scares the snot outta newbs! Pedro, my fave, probably has a 300' ramp when waters down with six lanes and on a summer day can be a real intimidator for the uneducated! There's no way the 1.5" fender rule applies above water, it's more like 3" below or the boat won't come off the trailer! Typically it's back in until the truck bumper is just above the water!

mmandley
06-01-2009, 09:11 AM
We got a few lakes like that up here. The water is low its a full pool but the ramps just don't have a big slant to them. I have several times put the rear tires in the water to get the boat on and off the trailer.

I figure as long as the trucks exhaust isn't in the water i can always put her in 4x4 if i need the extra traction to pull out. lol

Razzman
06-01-2009, 09:30 AM
Here's a shot of the Don Pedro ramp late last season in the background, the killer is the top is 75-100' outta the pic, gotta love it!

mmandley
06-01-2009, 09:33 AM
Wow thats a long ramp to the water LOL.

Non of our ramps look that long.

Worst ive been on actually was at Dexter. Jester knows this ramp. The left lane which is best to launch our boats on, the concrete broke and shifted. So there's a 6 inch drop from one slab to the next.

Well last time i went i actually had to put the truck in 4x4 to use the front tires to get enough traction to pull out of the water with the boat. Ramp is plenty steep and you don't have to drop real fare in the water but with the ramp damage it makes if interesting.

Razzman
06-01-2009, 09:53 AM
Yeah i always have the truck in 4 wheel auto at the ramp! When the waters low there's usually a lot of gravel at the waterline. I just love the idiots that sit there and spin their wheels to get out and spray gravel and mud all over their boats!

mmandley
06-01-2009, 09:58 AM
Yea i hear ya. At Merwin last week this little old Datsun, had a little fishing boat he was launching. Once he got the boat off the trailer the old guy got in the truck and revved it up, dropped the clutch and spun his one wheeled wonder all the way up the ramp lol.

I have had it when the water was so low that the trailer wheels where off the ramp into the soft dirt. Dang water dropping 2 feet when your out on the water. Had ot put in 4 low because there was a little drop off at the end of the ramp. Good times at the ramp.

JV, nice. I had an accident about 2 weeks ago and the insurance co ended up writing off my Diesel. Just got the check saturday, so now we're shopping for a new tow vehicle. In fact it happened the night before the Chicago Jamboree. I had to phone around to some buddies to borrow a truck to pull my boat.

Well, after years of troublefree service, I traded in my 02 Avalanche for an 09 Avalanche. There are some things I miss about the 02 and a lot of things that are better on the 09. I really like the built in backup camera in the rear view mirror on the new truck. Hopefully, this truck will give me 8-10 years of trouble free life too.

Tazz, problem with the Mega cab is the short box. Less than 6 ft. I need the 8ft box, although the wife finds this truck just a touch too long for her compared to our old Dodge. If you don't get the Mega Cab, the Dodge 4 door back seats are very small and upright.

Depending on what is being hauled, this can temporarily give long-bed utility from a short-bed truck:
