View Full Version : How to Post Pictures???

How do you post pictures to this board in a reply? I tried using the file box at the bottom of posting replies, but I can't get it to work. Initially, I think the picture was too large because I would get an error indicating the file upload failed, try again. However, I saved the picture in a much smaller format (26K) and retried several times. Now, I get a really strange error stating I need to "CHMOD my OPENBB TMP directory to 777" or something similar. Any ideas here????

Here is the exact error message:

Could not copy file. Please CHMOD your OpenBB's 'tmp' directory to 777.

This CHMOD error is a Unix operating system (possibly Linux?) error that has to do with write permissions to a directory (most likely).

I just tried to insert this image - we'll see how it works.

So the previous method of posting pictures using BB foromat codes works if you have a URL from a valid website. You just click on the "img" button in the message composition windo and specify the URL.

I am going to try using the Browse box at the bottom of the composition window.

I hit the same CHMOD error. The upload is smart enough to restrict size, so it recognizes the image. But the permissions on the directory are not set to allow Public write. This is actually pretty standard in the Unix world. So is this mistake. Giving public write to a directory is a potentially big security hole.

It will be interesting to see if they ever fix this for this BB.

So Dave, does this mean that the message board is not capable of allowing us to post pics from our hard drive?

Brian

I would say that is correct. My guess is the administrator tried it and it worked because he has the necessary privileges to write to that directory. Thus giving the appearance of the process working correctly. But until they get their security stuff figured out I doubt anyone can get it to work.

OPTION: If you would like to post your picutres to the web but do not know how or do not have any file space to load to, check out:

http://www.webshots.com

You can add about 75 photos, 3 albums of 25 each, for free and they stay up indefinitely. You deal with a little bit of advertsing, but once you get them up there you can use the 'img' capabilities of this board to refer to you photos URL.

Good luck,
Dave

Okay, I have some photos on the webshots website. How do I use the img button to point to a particular picture of mine on the webshots website????

Here's how to reference a photo at Webshots:
1. Go to Webshots and log in.
2. Navigate to your album and find the photo you want to reference in this post.
3. In the Address box of your browser Highlight the entire address, for my example it will be
http://community.webshots.com/scripts/editPhotos.fcgi?action=showMyPhoto&albumID=6841495 3&photoID=68416468&security=gGBNsk

Note that this is one continuous string, even if it does not look like it here.
4. In the message composition window of this board (after signing in correctly), click on the img button and a popup window will appear asking for the URL.
5. Paste the Webshots link in there. The image will not appear in the composition window, just the URL surrounded by some img tags.
6. Finish your message.
7. Submit you reply

Here is my attempt at following my own instructions.
http://community.webshots.com/scripts/editPhotos.fcgi?action=showMyPhoto&albumID=6841495 3&photoID=68416468&security=gGBNsk

OK - Well that did not work so well...
Did you notice that the URL works for navigation....

I think the problem is that the URL is not actually the photo, but some kludge of WEBSHOT pathing and the photo. Based on this I tried something else.
Assuming you are using Internet Explorer:
1. Navigate to your webshot photo.
2. Right click while mouse is over the photo.
3. In the pop up window, select 'Properties'
4. In the properties window find the Address property and highlight the entire address, may be more than one line.
In my test case it is http://community.webshots.com/s/image5/1/64/68/68416468gGBNsk_ph.jpg

5. In the composition window for this board click on img, paste the URL
6. Finish message and submit.

Here goes nothing....

BB appears to be OS sensitive. I have a system running Win98 and one running XP. The Win 98 and related IE (version 6.xxx) shows all the photos on this thread.
The XP with related IE version only shows my first photo of Richard upside down, none of the ones after the Webshot discussion.

Well I am done troubleshooting this one. Any one else...

Maybe it is more than that..
It appears it might be an internal setting in IE or some firewall setting or ??. I am not able to link to the photo using the URL in my webshot message.
I get:

Forbidden

I found that if I go to the properties on the picture thats not being shown on the forum and put the address of the picture in address bar and load the picture alone then it will load in the forums too. Something that might be causing the problem is that your are linking the pictures to a server that won't let you link it to forums. I know there is a web site called www.imagestation.com and they will not let you link up pictures to other places like forums. They are like that because they don't want all there bandwidth used. I use comcast which I get as part of my web service provider but I know if you register at a place like www.angelfire.com for free web page you can upload pictures to there server and then beable to link up your pictures to the forum. You would follow the same procedures as already explained to link the pictures. Here is a picture from my comcast server:

Here is a pic from angelfire.com

Let me know if you see them.

WELL, I'M AS CONFUSED AS EVER....................WHEN I LOADED MY PICS LAST NIGHT I COULD SEE THEM ALL, THEN COME BACK TODAY AND CAN'T SEE ANY OF THEM. I RELOADED THE PAGE, WENT TO OTHER PAGES AND BACK TO THIS THREAD AND STILL NOTHING. THEN I TRIED WHAT "CHRIS_5" WAS SAYING ABOUT COPYING THE IMAGE PROPERTIES AND PASTING IN THE ADDRESS BAR AND THAT WORKED. THEN, IF I COME BACK TO THIS THREAD I CAN SEE THE PICTURES IN THE POST FOR THE IMAGES THAT I HAVE COPIED AND PASTED THE ADDRESS FOR AND ALREADY VIEWED INDIVIDUALLY. THEN ANOTHER TWIST....IF I CLICK "REFRESH"............WHEN IT RELOADS, I CAN'T SEE THEM ANYMORE, BUT IF GO TO ANOTHER PAGE THEN RETURN TO THIS PAGE, I CAN SEE IT. I FOUND THIS TO BE TRUE WITH MINE AND DAVE'S POSTS. I HAVE NO CLUE!!!! SEEMS LIKE THERE HAS TO BE AN EASIER WAY!!

The first photo I posted, the upside down skier (my son), was also from a Comcast personal storage area.

I really think it is a Windows verision thing possibly combined with that server/forum blocking thing mentioned a couple messages up.

I have two machines and have the BB up on this thread on both. My Win 98 machine (which is acting as a client behind my XP machine) works just fine in using either IE or Netscape. My XP machine (acting as Host) does not display some of the images, but displays others. The ones that it displays are from private user spaces. The ones that do not display are on the public shared space.

Here is the theory I am going with. Assuming that the Public shared spaces actually prevent you from looking at them from a forum link, something must be telling the server that you are coming from a forum. My guess is that XP is telling the server more information than Win98, or my client machine is getting masked somehow so that it can't tell I am on a forum.

I suppose the answer is to not use WEB Shots as a direct link for the image but you can still use the URL reference as a literal (without img tags)

Anyhow I am about done with this issue. Suggestion is to try using the space you ISP has provided you. If you have an email account you probably have personal web page space and don't even know it. 10-11 meg is common.. If you ask them they can probably help you upload to you space. Then you can use the image tags as designed.

Good luck
Dave
