On saturday morning my 12 year old son and a couple of his buddies engaged in a new sport going around called slap boxing. Well one well placed shot to my sons ear and he now has a ruptured ear drum that is going to require surgery to repair. The doctor has told us that he will not be able to get in the water for 3 to 6 months!!! Parents alert you kids that some simple little games can result in serious injuries!!!

Sorry to hear about that.

I was introducing to pantzing (spelling?) when the principal called to ask for permission to spank my 9yr old. Basically yanking pants down.

Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah I just spent the last 2 weekends getting the Moomba ready for the water. She is sitting besides the house waiting for a transfer to the boat lift and this happens! Saturday I will get her in the lift and then start on a new more difficult project. Of course it is being driven by my son, since he can't swim he wants to go fishing. So I have to get the Proline ready! First thing to do, replace the leaf springs on the trailer!!! So I am having a "replace the leaf springs" party saturday morning! Everyone is invited to get dirty, greasy and have a blast with a die grinder cutting off the heads of what appear to be bolts!!!! Then I will pass out big hammers and punches so we can have another blast knocking things out! Let me know if you plan to attend so I can determine if I need to go out and get some more Go Jo and safety glasses!!! :)

Sorry to hear about that. As summer starts to set in he is going to want to get into the water.

Ed, you are right about the games now a days. Now a days if you play paintpall in a city park SWAT shows up and takes away all your fun.

zegm - I'm sorry about your son's injury. That's tough all the way around. Hoping he makes a full recovery and does so sooner than expected by the doc. Also hoping you can get some quality time with him in the Proline as you're trolling for fish.

To Ed's observation about the old days, this from the municipal code in the town where we have lived since 1994: "No person shall have in his possession...a cannon, gun, pistol, revolver, stun gun or firearms of any description, a shotgun or rifle which may be used for the explosion of bullets and cartridges or any air gun, BB guns, gas operated gun or spring operated gun, or any instrument, toy or weapon commonly known as a peashooter, slingshot, beany or throwing star, or any knife...whether that instrument is called by any name set forth above or by any other name."

No comment from me one way or the other about guns or firearms. It just seems odd that in my town things like an air gun, peashooter, and slingshot that I enjoyed as a kid today get the same treatment as a cannon. - Deerfield

Talk about shooting, with the proper ear protection (ear muffs) and the doctors permission I did take him shooting. Now he wants rifle!!!

Oh, we only shot a .22 nothing that could jarr his ear!

Mike, very sorry to hear the news about Z. Hope he makes a quick recovery. I remember getting whacked in the head a few times while slap-boxing in Jr. High. I'd ask the doc if in a month or so he can go in with earplugs.

Thanks everyone for you well wishes and concerns!!!
Zachary is doing great! They had to go in behind his ear and put a skin graft on the drum to help it heal. The doctor calls it a ear drum bandaid. We have one of the best doctors in town who did the surgery but he is one of the worst doctors in town with bedside manners. After the surgery we had a list of questions, for example how long must we wait. So we are in the recovery room waiting for him to show up and he never did!!! We asked the nurses about him and they said he never visits the parents or patient after surgery. Well Mrs. Z and I were Pissed Off!!! Zach does goes back to the doctors office on Thursday so we will then address our questions with the Doctor then.
On a good note!!!! The LS in now sitting in the boat lift. We took the our daughter knee boarding (of course it isn't time for me or Mrs. Z to get in the water yet, too cold) and then pulled the LS into the lift and hoisted her up. She ran great and she looks so good sitting in the lift ready for the next time! We had a very strange sighting though while out on the lake!!! Someone saw our boat last year and apparently went and bought an Outback that LOOKS just like our LS. The Brittnany Blue and tower and all!!! See we helped Moomba sell a boat. I wasn't able to run them down to speak to them (Eliza was kneeboarding which see can do for Hours!) but next time I see them I will meet them and find out where they got it. I will see if they are on the boards too.

Sled,

I am confused?? MrsZ and I were dry.......I had on shorts and a t-shirt and Mrs. Z while in her bathing suit she stayed dry too?

Actually MrsZ might have gone but Friday night at Eliza's elementary school after school party MrsZ and I jumped in a sack together to show the kids how it is really done (sack races). Well I found out that the kids showed us how it is done and not only that somehow MrsZ tripped (said I tripped her) and when she pulled her foot out of the bag her big toe nail was almost ripped off (said I did it). So because of my June 1 rule, Zachary's ear, MrsZ toe we just have one qualified skier here to use the towing capabilities of our ski boat. The rest of us really enjoyed the riding around abilities of the roomy interior!!! :D
And again we were shocked to see our LS's little sister!!!!

Heres an idea Z cant you get little Z a dry suit hat? I took my buddy out Wake Boarding a month ago and he had a dry suit hat. Not very expensive and it kept his whole dead dry. Only his face was able to get wet.

Maybe this will work and he can get some time in the water still?

Guys!!! Pat, Stacy!!!
It was an after school cookout with games and prizes and "Potatoe Sack" races. Ok the wife and I had high expectations and well...... we failed because we fell!!!

OK now sorry I have been gone and again I don't know if someone replies to my post, but I should have checked back sooner. Anyway here is the latest news!!!!
ONE Week and ONE day after Zachary's surgery I took him back to the Doctor for his post surgery check up. The doctor looks in his ear, mutters something turns to us and said "this boy is the swimmer right?" we said yes! Well he can go swimming now!!!! WHAT!!!! I said!!!! WHAT??? He told us that his ear drum had healed faster than 99.9 percent of the population! I had to ask again, "when can he swim" and the doctor says "today!" However the doc says he can't dive in the water, he can't go under more than a couple of inches. So Zachary went swimming in our pool when we got home. Of course I didn't call and tell his mother this (she had to work on an important project at work)! She came home, walked in and saw him in the pool!!!!! It was great!!!! She was yelling and screaming at him "what are you doing in the pool!!!" OK so I was a bad boy for a few minutes. He will line up for the back stroke this Thursday's meet which is his best stroke anyway. He has been at swimming practice all week with no problems.
OK OK how does this relate to skiing you are asking?? Of course I asked the doctor about that too! But with the stipulation that he wears a Pro-Tec Wake Junior with the EAR PADS! The doctor said yes, just make sure that it is tight. Well I did tell the doctor that for the first month he would wear the helmet and only kneeboard, then we will let him ski and wakeboard, ohhhhh and I forgot and surf (didn't want to disappoint you there Ed!).
Ok I am writing a book so this is the end, ah wait not done yet ....of course last weekend was Mama day so we went out of town and left the poor but gorgeous LS sitting in the lift! Come on Friday!!!!

Hey everyone! We go to Zach's doctor on Tuesday and see how his ear is going. We will see if we get to get into the water again.
We meant to go out today but spend most of the day (Zach and I) cleaning weeds out from around the boat dock. Man we got a huge pile of this stuff going. We even got creative and used a kayak and a rake on a rope to pull is Islands of this stuff t shore!
OH!!!! I got in the Lake Today!!!! I was stepping on a small tree that was overgrowing the bank (been wanting to get rid of that thing for a long time) anyway I had my weight on it and Zach was sawing it with a limb saw,(I was keeping the saw from binding on him). All of a sudden I heard a loud Snap and hey what do you know!!!! I finally got in the lake!!! It wasn't cold either!!!! I reached down into the mud to find my Birkie as quick as I could and got out of there though!!!! Never know where that little baby gator is going to be, yeah I got a neighbor feeding one!!!!

I forgot to update everyone on Zach's doctor visit!!! Sorry but because he is exceptionally smart student he is participating with a small group of 6th graders this week at Florida State University (Panama City Campus) doing some science/robotic projects so I postponed his doctors appointment until Friday when him and his team will be finished.
As far as the trip, Ginny is having to wait to see how far along this new product launch is proceeding. I am prepared to just make a weekend trip of it and she might too but usually in a new product launch they perform the line changes during the weekend while the line is down. So everyone cross your fingers and say your prayers for both the boy (Zack) and the awesome slalom skier (Ginny) and hope we will make it up there that weekend. We are actually planning on leaving July 3rd or somewhere around that time frame.
Wolfeman, no matter what we will go to Sinclair during the summer, it might not be during the Great Milledgeville Moomba Jam but we always visit Ma and PaPa (Ginny's parents) up there during the summer and I sure will drag the boat with us. So we will see you and your super great family sometime this summer. I really want to see how the Touareg pulls the LS for a long distance. Towing it around here I haven't been able to tell it was behind us! I will have to tell you the story of how I pulled Ginnys Jetta out of some deep deep sand when we are there, something about Diesel Low End Torque. :)

That would be a great time. Hitch up and stop in KY at lake whatever it is Dale Hollow I think, then on to Knoxville to I think it's Louisville Lake, and then Lake Lanier and lake Sinclair in GA. Then head down to Leesburg, Lake Harris and visit the Wakeboard Camp in Clermont. Go home the other way and check out the zegm lake (is it Deer Point?) in Panama City. Go up through AL and see the guys around Birmingham or Huntsville and then Kentucky Lake and maybe Lake Shelby or something in IL. I think I'm going to do something like that next summer. Could you imagine a Moomba caravan for 2 weeks?

I still consider myself a kid.

Maybe a grown up kid.

The other day i was driving down the road, and this young boy and young girl, more than likely his sister were out in the yard with what appeared to be a BB gun rifle or something along that line. Anyways, while passing, the little boy aimed the gun at my vehicle, and followed through with the fake shot. If I would not have been in a hurry, I would have pulled over and gave that young man a short lesson on what guns for, and why we use them. To kill things! They kill things. Guns are fun, and I grew up with them, but I was educated as to the safety and responsibility that toting and using any gun carried. Toy guns are the same as big guns.

The point I would like to make, is that there are numerous ways to have fun, and get a natural high, high on just living a good life, putting in an honest days work, and reap the rewards and benefits of doing it.

I hope all kids find a hobby or past time. I would sure love to go back and be a kid again, all that free time. Gosh the things I could know now. But, it was all fun and I am still alive, and we must all through our own mistakes to learn from them sometimes.

gc,

My son is now the 1st ranked skier in the family. What I mean by that is that he is the one that pushes us to get the boat ready and go out and spend the day on the water. Well now that he can't ski or get in the water (Postponed Dr. Visit again until Tues) our boat is sitting in the lift at the dock. Not used nearly as much. But it wasn't him that was irresponsible, it was his friend. My son is a 2nd degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Doe and knows better to hit someone in the ear. The sad part is that the boy that did this, a great kid, he has gotten over it and is enjoying his summer while my son can't do his water sports and is bored. Sometimes the leason learned wasn't taught to the correct student.
I think you should have pulled over and given that young kid advice!

Reminds me of a story. Mrs. Beerling down the street had a bunch of wild boys when my Dad was a kid. One of the kids ran in the house and said to Mrs. Beerling, "Bobby shot Babe (his younger brother) with his BB gun!" So, as the story goes, Mrs. Beerling went outside and grabbed the BB gun from Bobby and "peppered him good!"

Ok we took the boat out today! Everyone got in the water! Yes I skied today!!! Zachary was allowed to kneeboard but was told to NOT WIPE OUT and get his head wet! He was wearing a helmet with the ear flaps!!!

Yes when the fog cleared we finally found the dock with the boat sitting in it, whew!!!

Right now we are planning on the Millidgeville/Sinclair jamboree! Mrs.Z is working hard to get all of her stuff "programmed" and tested before we go.

The LS is great, we skied down the course, kneeboarded and surfed! You should have seen the faces of the people in the Ski Tique as Zachary surfed right on by them!

Well let me see what I can do about getting some pictures. You see Zachary has a Wake Junior helmet and Eliza has a Classic wake helmet. Not only for wakeboarding but they love to kneeboard together and they are both pretty good at it!
Hers had ear flaps because she had ALL the ear problems growing up and he didn't and so his beautiful blue helmet has no ear flaps. Now you probably ask what that has to do with the pictures. Her helmet is Pearl White and almost has a pink glow to it!!! I think you now understand what the issue is. And I am not about to spend 45 more dollars on another helmet. She now wears his and he wears hers!

zegm
06-23-2009, 09:43 PM
Me tell him that!??? I think he is at the age where I can't tell him anything! Isn't that why we pay for a karate school, swimming lesson, band camp, etc. They will listen to everyone but us his parents!
I mean he didn't even want to wear it period but when I said where it or don't ski then he decided he could accept that!

What a lightening show we have going on now! Better click send before it's too late!!!

zegm
06-23-2009, 11:48 PM
Oh! Zachary finally had his Doctors appointment! He can get in the water! He can ski, kneeboard, wakeboard but must wear the helmet with the ear flaps.

Just remember when this first happened he was not expected to be able to get in the water for 6 months!!!!

Kids heal soooooo fast!!!!

Wolfeman,
My vacation was approved!!! We will see you there. Ginny is pretty sure she can go but if not we might have to leave her!
Pat, Stacy hope to see you there!

Now that everyone has the approval to get wet I am sure we will be spending a lot of money on gas for the boat! I now need to find a way to fill it up easily while at the dock. We have no Marina's on this lake! The Feds and the Florida Dept. of Natural resources watch this area like hawks!!! We are not allowed to fuel at our docks (yeah right!) we can't bring any motorized equipment (except lawnmowers) near the waters edge. We have to get permission to cut any trees over 6" in diameter within a 100ft of the water!!! They actually fly over this place in helicopters!!! Maybe that is where that alligator with the deer in its mouth picture came from!!!

Sled, its still not to late. The Sinclair Jam is starting to sound like the jam to be at. Funny after driving to Minnessota my wife and i were talking about doing something like that next time--bring the boat and hit some lakes on the way and meet some other Moomba owners around the country.
