Prop nicked trailer runner

A couple weeks ago on a windy day I took my outback out for the first time and everything was great except one thing I cannot stop thinking about. When I was backing the boat off the wind blew the boat a little off center and I thought prop hit the trailer because of the vibration I got. I thought there was no way for the prop to hit any part of the trailer if the depth was correct and the boat was not completely crooked. We drove around for an hour or so and everything was fine. I put the boat back on the trailer and I noticed that I indeed cut through the carpet and into the wood about an inch. Am I missing something? Do I need to put something over the pylons to keep the boat more centered?:confused:

That's a tough one. I assume the launch is fairly flat where the tail end is not in deep water. Just make sure the nose goes straight in and out and with a lot of wave action you need someone to keep the boat centered between the poles.

You can't do anything about extreme conditions. Just maybe next time maybe go back to the poles and push you self off abit before you put her in gear.

I'd like to know if he replaced the prop that he wanted to keep, with one that doesn't fit quite right.

Was this the first time you launched the boat since purchasing it?

Yes this is the first time on the lake since i purchased this boat. Thats a good point abot the prop size, this boat will run 54-56 mph, i think thats a little fast for that model, right?

How fast? Those are Sanger speeds. I've never heard an OUtback hitting those speeds. Time to pull out the ole' GPS.

Yeah,unless the speedo is wrong it will do around 55.

Dude that is very very fast for a DD. I get 45 - 47 and that's at the top end by myself with a GPS. I'd borrow a GPS and reclaibrate your speedos. That is if I'm right, if I'm wrong you got one fast boat there! How is it out of the hole? What prop is on it?

Out of the hole is good, but since i have never had a DD maybe it is not as good as it could be.

We were at Taylor's ferry south (ft gibson) which is a pretty flat ramp. I would say the top of the fenders were out 4 inches. Mybe i was to far in if the boat was floating off the runners.

First things first, check it against the GPS.

I think if you hit your trailer you backed in too deep !

Try stopping after you get about 1/2 to 3/4 of the fender under water.

Give that a try and adjust from there.

I would also check the condition of your trailer bunks with the boat off of there. If you have one that is sagging or loose it might let the boat sit in the wrong position or sag too low on the trailer. These have to be replaced every few years and should be inspected at least annually if not more often.

How difficult is it to replace trailer bunks? Mine look like 2x6's, does that sound right on a single axle OBV trailer?

Stupid question, but are they just treated lumber cut to size, wrapped in carpet?

Any tips on how to go about replacing them?

You got it. Just unwrap the old ones and drill through the old one into the new one to get the alignment right then add either new carpet or reinstall the old stuff and reinstall the bunks Shouldn't be more than a 1 beer job D)

another stupid clarifying question - do I just need to mosey down to Menards or Home Depot and pick up some green treated 2x6's and cut to length?

Any tips on where to get the new carpet?

Yep on the 2x6's and as for the carpet try to get some heavier marine grade stuff, maybe onlline or at a local supplier,

Overtons sells it. It would be lower grade marine carpet than what you would put on your boat.

Right nothing special, just marine grade

I had to redo the bow section last year and I went to the local boat store and got bunk carpet and it wasn't cheap. The way that sections wear you should have some good bunk carpet.
