Bent Prop

Hey guys,

I have a 2004 Moomba Outback. Unfortunately I bent the prop this weekend on an unknown underwater object. (my guess is an old piling since I was in about 5-6ft of water when it happened). Just one blade was bent.

Anyway I took it to my dealer to see if they had a quick replacement. They did not. Instead they beat the bend in the prop out with a mallet and an anvil. This put some small dings in the blade and it still looked slightly bent so I chose not to put it back on my boat.

The prop is an OJ 3-blade (Part # 903) 13X13 1" bore, LH rotation.

1. Will the fact that it was beat on with a hammer be an issue if I want OJ to repair it for me?

2. How much $$$ am I looking at to get it repaired?

3. I was just going to get a new OJ or ACME prop, but they were running close to $400. Are you guys really paying this much or is there anywhere else you can get the cheaper?

Only a reputable prop shop can answer the first two to your specific prop and to the third, yes they are around $400 new and better yet if you find one cheaper. Check ebay and craigslist, sometimes you get lucky.

Hmm I guess ill give OJ a call Monday.

But If I wanted to get another new prop what should I look for? I would probably want CNC OJ or ACME.

We use the boat almost exclusively for wakeboarders, wakeskaters and tubing. No ballast system is ever used but we often have 10 or 11 people out on the boat. And we are in FL if that matters. A friend told me I should look at a 4-blade prop, I know nothing about them?

I guess I would need help selecting the correct size for my boat. I have no idea how to tell!

Either OJ or Acme will definately know better than anyone which prop is best for your application, especially OJ as they supply SC's props. As for the old one, have it repaired as a spare.

You were definitely right not to run the bent prop. The cost of replacing other parts makes the cost of a new prop seem cheap in comparison. They can fix it though.

I definatly believe you should get the old prop fixed as a back up, and I also agree that it sounds like you need to switch to a 4 blade. I put a stainless 4 blade on my 07 outback. Better hole shot, slight drop on top end. Even though, mine is stainless, it was not a good one and you can tell. The 400 bucks for a good prop will be worth it if you can swing it.
