View Full Version : My Swivel Seat Mod

I was at work, killing time digging through our metal scrap and found a nice piece of 3/16" stainless plate. I got to thinking about my swivel project. It would allow me a low profile swivel install and would be plenty strong. So after a few bud light lime's and some metal fab on the peice of stainless I went to it. To my surprise I found that I could move the seat over so it was center on the steering wheel, and still swivel it amost 110 degrees.
The seat back was just high enough to slip right over the arm rest.
The swivel I picked up from boaters world bolted right up to the factory threaded inserts on the seat. All I had to do was add a poly spacer (cutting board) between the seat ant the swivel. I also had to add the riser in the back, so the seat sat level when turned around.
I think I'm really going to like this mod for surfing.
I'm very happy with the result as indicated in the last picture!! ;)
BTW thanks Chillyx for the motivation.
My wife is getting tired of me "playing" as she calls it in the boat. I hope she doesn't make me choose between her and the boat. I'd kinda miss my wife... ha ha ha.

Notice how center the seat sets.

Awesome! I'm all over this! Was it the economy swivel you got? Btw, is there any stop to keep it from sveling when you don't want it to?

newty
03-27-2009, 03:56 PM
Yes its the economy one and no it has no stop. I kinda like just being able to spin when I want without having to reach around the bottom and fight those releases. My experience with the locking type swivel has not been good. When driving you would always have your feet planted and hanging on to the wheel anyway.
I like being able to swing around while underway. You know... to reach more beer! Safety first! You wouldn't want to have to reach down and unlock the swivel to get a beer while underway, would you... not safe at all!!;)

nice work !!! more importantly are bud light limes any good? i haven't step out of my boundaries of the original bud light ... :)

Meech I too love the bud light but the lime is money. When that miller chill came out I thought it was ok but not enough to pull me away from my true love bud light. Then I tried the lime... Its still bud light, just with a twist. Buy a 6er and try it out.
My absolute favorite for a hot summer day on the boat.
Mmmmmmm... summer!

sweet Newty! I picked up one of the non-locking swivels at boater's world the other night for $9.99 + 20% off. I was slightly worried about not having it lock in place, but your safety tips have convinced me that I made a good call.

Newty--
How much did it raise the seat if any?

nice swivel, i guess you really don't need the swivel lock, i have always done things to hold the swivel handle if free spin anyway, and it could impair you ability to reach freely for the drinks.

Newty, do you have detailed pics of the modification.

BL lime is good as well, no messy limes with the coronas:D

Tazz, it raised the seat about 3/4" in the front and 1 1/2 in the rear so the seat was level and pivoted level.

Time will tell if I need a swivel lock but its a direct replacement and a simple fix.

jmvotto I showed my buddy with a new outback my set-up and... of course he wants to do it on his. We are getting ready to do a stereo install among other things on his so when our boats trade homes and we get going on it I'll make sure to post detailed picks of the process.
I believe the outback seat sits lower so height isn't as much an issue as it is with the LSV.
When I sat in the seat of my LSX the top frame of the windsheild was right in my line of sight. I either had to hunch down to see under it or sit up a little to see over it.
In my buddies OBV I can see clearly under the window frame with room to spare, and with the bolster its easy to see over. Being low profile won't be an issue in his. I'll do more along the lines of what chillx did with the poly boards instead of the stainless plate.

Just an off the shelf boaters world non locking swivel. The bolt holes are elongated to fit different patterns. I believe its about 8" square. Not sure. I think they are all standard.
I actually took my seat with me down to boaters world put it in a cart and played with different types in the store. Much easier than guessing and making a second trip.

Newty is the non locking a problem??

I saw an attwood swivel base at wllay world and thought it might do the trick except it was non locking.

I absolutely love the non locking. I put a locking one in my buddies boat and its a pain to unlock. I like to be able to swivel around at any time. It really hasn't been an issue when driving. I don't get whipped around when taking off, or stopping.

No issues for 2 years with this set-up.
The only thing I did was double up the poly spacers because the vinyl seat base was rubbing on the bolts.

so it takes some effort to get it to swivel, not like a bar stool.

so i would be ok with POWERTURNS:D

Do you have any pictures of it taken apart? How does the seat come off of that sliding mount? Ive taken then seat out before but i took it off with the sliding thing still on the bottom. dont remember seeing a way to seperate the two.

Pull your seat cushion out and you will see the bolts. Just remove the nuts and washers, and the carrage bolts will remain in the slide. You may have to hold the carrage bolts in place to keep them from spinning.
Then take the small access panel off the front of the fiberglass seat base to access the slide bolts.

i was unaware you could remove the seat cushion from the frame, does it just pull up?

That one will work fine. Some folks have used ones that lock in position after you turn.

I think others have used this one. It's a bit less than the one you linked to.

All the stuff I bought will soon find it's way into E4's ride. I could never get that far on my To Do list, so I just bought a boat that came with a swivel seat.

Oh if I could only sell my wife on that idea... *sigh*

Oh, there was some serious negotiations and concessions given from my side such as an interior designer, furniture, drapes, artwork, etc. and the invoices that almost equal the cost of the boat. Happy wife = happy life & empty checking account. :)

I wish the xlv came with the swivel. Is that the part that sc uses for the Mojo..
Also the bolsters on the xlv seat is useless, it is way to swishy and just flattens. i would say it my fat arse but my wife did not like it either... wish they kept the 07 08 seats... my .02

I have to agree on the bolster.

No, that isn't the way it is on the Mojo. The Mojo has a pedestal base w/ swivel.
