We've got a new tower. I'm picking it up tommorrow. Any advice on installation would be fantastic. Wish me luck. I'll send photos.

Advice? Take your time. Step back and look. Look at photos on the web of your boat with your tower. Put it where you want it. Check underneath to make sure the glass is thick enough to handle it. If not, take the time to glass in some extra backing. Take extreme care drilling through the gelcoat -- instructions are available all over this board. And, as always, measure twice and cut once.

You can hold her rudder when they drill into her.

Good luck on the install. Can you take pic's of the process. Would be intersting to see from start to finish.

When drilling the holes, be sure to use a carbide bit. I did when I drilled holes on the bottom of my boat for the new ballast pumps. There was no chipping or craking of the gel coat.

Thanks for the great advice. Its 9 degrees outside so it may be a few days before we install. I will take photos of our process and post.

Saturday should be in the 50's. Should I, Fiberglass the back plate or is the thickness of the hull enough?

It's a judgment call you have to make. My tower came with 2 backing plates for each "foot". I thought the fiberglass was thick enough at the mounting points such that, with the 2 backing plates, it would be sufficient. So far I haven't had any problem at all. I would say if it feels thick you are going to be ok but if it feels a little thin you're better safe than sorry.

I did put kitty hair fiberglass reinforcement on the backing plate. so I think were good.
