V-Drive Leak

I think my v-drive may have a small leak, as I always notice a bit of oil in my bilge water..

Also, since getting the oil changed in the spring until last week caused the oil level to drop about a cm below the low level line...

how much would do you think would be involved in getting this fixed up, for now I'll just keep an eye on it and top up as necessary..

only enough knowledge here to be dangerous, but I believe there is a fitting or two on the bottom of the vdrive so there might be the problem.
I think JEsseC knows abit about this..
I think there is a magnet fitting and a drain/with screen... Probably a touch loose..
if you can't find something loose, I would look to dealer pretty quick as a blown vdrive would not be fun or cheap...

Seems like someone else on here had that problem a while back and it ended up being the oil sender switch that shuts that red light off that is below the throttle. I also have this small leak, but it has not been enough to worry about. Since mine is an 02 it may actualy be the output seal. Mine leaks at such a slow rate, I have not fixed it yet. Just be sure to check your fluids very often. Another way to tell if it is the sender is to rubber band a paper towel around the sensor and then inspect the paper towel at the end of the day. If it is soaked with oil, then just replace the sender.

Is it easy to get access to the sender switch?

Here is a pic of the sender circled with an arrow pointing at the actual device. This picture was sent to me by Brain Raymond a while back when I was installing the raw water strainer. I can take a better picture this weekend if I need to. The sender is located just below the fiberglass "step" under the rear seat. The sender is on the port side of the V-drive. Just rubberband a paper towel to it to see if it is leaking. There is also two or three lines on the unit that may need to be tightened. I believe mine is leaking from the output seal which is why I have not fixed it, the leak is not bad enough yet to do all that work.

My v-drive has a leak also. While winterizing last year I removed the drain plugs, applied a good thread sealer & tighted. Leak is not as bad so some was from the drain plugs. Mine appears to be a seal but it is not bad enough to justify pulling the v-drive. I check all fluids regularly and have not had to add oil to the v-drive this season.

Hi,

I have a Moomba Mobius LSV 2002, and have the same leak, but it has gotten worse. I spoke to a boat dealer in town (Madison WI), and they said it is supposed to leak a little bit to keep the drive shaft lubricated. But if it leaks more than a few drops every few seconds or so (or whatever the normal timeframe), then it is a problem.

I will post my reply after we have resolved this in the next week or so.
