Is there a way to change the max person sticker in your boat?

I have a 2003 Mobius LSV. I love the boat but it has a rating of 10 people. The newer LSV's are rated for 14. Is there that much difference in hull design? I would like to bring a few more people with me but to do that I either have to get a bigger boat or see if I can change the capacity sticker. Has anyone ever tried to do this?

I agree with Ed. I don't think there is a law requiring the sticker, so take it off, and make sure there is a seat and a life vest for everyone on the boat and you shouldn't have a problem.

Yea, I'd peel it off and if I ever had to go to court I'd supply info on the hull with the higher rating. Good luck!

Interesting, I did not know that. When the sticker is removed, how would the weight limitations be enforced by the powers to be?

Ummmmmm,
I don't think changing the Coast Guard Rating is such a good idea. Especially if you ever have an accident. You will be liable and open your self up to lawsuits.

WD 40 will get all the sticky off without hurting the boat (scratching).

I have heard that down here in Florida they look for that decal if they suspect you have too many rebel rousers in your boat. Now if you can't find it or didn't know anything about it I don't know what they would say.

If anybody finds it please post the link. Mine says 8 and I haven't pulled it off yet. Z, the liability will be there either way. Why display something that gives a boat cop "authority" to write a ticket that you have to go and defend?

I just remembered that our old 1975 MasterCraft had NO such sticker anywhere on it. I don't believe the manufacturers put them on the boats way back when.

We got a new runabout in around 74-75-76. I remember adults talking about the plaque on it that said it could only have a 65 horse motor. Dad put a new 70 HP Johnson on it anyway. It would go about 45 then he put a better ski prop on. I liked it before when it was faster cuz I could still ski real easy-- but I weighed about 180 lbs. less than I do now.

Without the sticker, the police would have to have a database to show capacity or total weight or pull the boat and weigh it which I have never seen. If the boat was grossly overloaded with people or ballast then they would probably take pictures inventory people, ballasts and other items that influences the bouyancy and then write a ticket.

Last weekend 10 Guys in my buddies tige (14 capacity), girls in te moomba (10 capacity) Patrol came right up behind a cruising speed 15 -20 mph counted heads and took off. They have an idea from the make model or hull # what can be in the boat. sticker is just a OEM guideline. For example the moomba says 10 peeps or 1480 lbs , don't know of 10 guys that avg 148lb lol.:p Thts why the fat guys were in the 24ft tige. I think is says w/o equip and motor also???

The answer to your original question is yes there is a huge difference in the design of the hulls. The new LSV 06 and newer is a 22' boat which has a lot more freeboard therefore a higher weight limit. The pre 06 LSV is the same as the 06 and later Outback V.

I think you guys need to spread the weight more evenly. Too much safe boating can be boring! Wait a minute. Let me guess which boat the cooler was in!
