Met up with ed G and his wife and brother in law on saturday. Ive been asking my daughter to try wakeboarding,surfing-allways get no as a answer. Well this day she says she wants to try, Ed's wife says let me help, she gets in the lake and gives some coaching and must have spent about a hour and a half in the lake. Well now she can just get up and ride like no ones buisness. Later she says now i understand why you like going to the lake so much Dad. When i was surfing and fell and waiting for the boat to come around she undid the rope from the tower , when i asked her why she did this she say's "its my turn". This has made me one happy Dad. Today she tried her wakeboard and got up and rode for the first time ever-all because of what she learned the day before.

Again a big thank you to Ed and his wife. What a pleasure it was to hang out with you guys.

Stacy

I discovered a rock in a river that isn't supposed to have any. Here's a picture of the prop and one of the rudder.

all i can say is wow-youll have to tell us the story

No story. Launched at the Basin in Bainbridge, GA. You take a narrow channel from the basin to the Flint River. There was a boat trying to come in so I made a right turn. I was plenty far enough out from shore. Was watching the gauges and slowly accelerating (I always do this the first time I take off- it's habit). Was at almost half power when BOOOOOOOOOM! I stopped. The boat was still running. I tried to putt back to the basin to load it on the trailer and have a look. No steering. Got a tow in and loaded up. The prop is destroyed, the rudder busted clean off. The drive shaft may be bent. I can't tell for sure. The strut may be bent too. It's hard to tell.

Some guys on the water says, "Hey, there's a big rock out there if you turn right." I said, "No $hit?" I've never hit anything in that river before and never heard of anyone hitting a rock right near the entrance to the basin. I can't believe it wasn't marked. There's plenty of other markers for "no wake", etc.

I have a spare prop and I can order and install a new rudder assembly. I don't know how to tell if the drive shaft is bent or how serious it is though. I don't know if there's any inboard service facility anywhere around here either. Not sure what I am going to do. Maybe fix the rudder, throw the other prop on and take a test run. Take it easy- see how it looks. Vibrations will tell how serious it is.

Pat, man im sorry to see that. that sucks

my thoughts are get the old prop off, hook up to a fake a lake and let it idle in gear with no prop or rudder on and just look at the shaft and see how it looks, or if the prop shaft will spin by hand, put a straight edge( level should work) along the shaft and see if youve got any high or low spots as you spin it. if it looks good put the new rudder and prop on and go for ride and see how it feels. probly should still get it to a dealer and have them inspect it afterwards.

Kaneboats,

Hey that looks terrible!!!! Man I feel for you!!
We will have some room on our boat at the Jamboree, we can spread the kids around!
To determine if the driveshaft is bent, put a jackstand near it or something that you can fasten a screw driver on (visegrips work good to secure it to the jack stand) it in a horizontal plane (doesn't have to be perfect). Slide this assembly so that the tip of the screw driver is just touching or about to touch the driveshaft. Then have someone turn the prop and watch for a gap to appear between the tip and the driveshaft. You can move this assembly around the driveshaft to check it. Also if the driveshaft is bent it will turn easily and then get hard as it binds up in the strut bushings.

Take the shaft out and take it to machine shop. They can put it on a lathe and use an dial indicator to see if it is out. I had a similar situation years ago where a blade broke off the propeller, bent the shaft and strut on our 1964 chris craft. Never did know if my brother hit something or not.

KB, All I can say is ouch! I bet your heart sank to the bottom with your rudder. I hope the shaft isn't bent, and you can get on the water soon. Beofre removing the shaft to see if it is true go with Z's idea, it will let you know how to proceed.

On the machine shop side, Kipp were they able to true the shaft or just let you know it was done?

Pat,

I wondered why we never saw you up river. I know the rock you hit. About 2 years ago I helped a few guys put their motor back in the boat that had been knocked off by that rock. The motor was hanging on by the control wires. The boat sank on that curve in about 4 feet of water. You have to go out toward the center of the river before you turn right. It should be marked because many people learn that the hard way.

WOW!!! That absolutely stinks! I hope you get back on the water soon. I had a close call this weekend. Came within inches of hitting a large boulder that was not marked. The only thing that gave it away was that its reflection from the sun made the water look brown so I slowed down as I approached. As I came on it, I jerked the wheel to avoid it and barely made it! Where were the markings??? Nowhere!!

Sorry I hijacked the thread guys.

I can't turn the propeller. I think I'm going to have to turn in a claim on this one. It's going to be at least $1800 just for parts, including prop, strut, shaft, rudder assembly. I don't think there's anyone around here that does inboards so I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

That's what insurance is for. The deductable is a lot easier to swallow than footing the whole bill, that's for sure.

Kaneboats. Gosh I am sorry! Couldn't it have been the last day of the summer instead?? You are not that far from here. Jody is just awsome and ALL the inboards around here go to him.

You can try Hart's Automotive 229-246-7118 in Bainbridge. He works on inboards as far as the mechanical side. That is where everyone carries them in the area. I'm not real sure if he would tackle what's wrong with yours but he is worth a shot. Always heard good things about his work with inboards.

Hey 04, did you have to pull the motor to get the shaft out or does it just slide out the back?

zegm

Kaneboats,

The driveshaft is pressed into a flange that connects to the mating flange on the back of the transmission. It is a taper fit and you have to use a nice wheel puller or a press, there is a nut on the shaft too but after you loosen this the shaft will still not budge. In the old days you could get them off but I have had no luck with the new style, the old style (and I am talking way back when) there was no securing nut and if the taper came loose and you put the boat into reverse the prop would pull the shaft loose and then the prop and shaft would drive itself right into the rudder, done this one!). Hopefully Jody can help you out if you get a chance to speak with him.

He understands my timeline. He's got an engine change and another job ahead of me but has to wait for parts too. He could not promise it would be ready for Tampa but it is certainly possible.

To Stacy, Mike (Zegm), Ed: Thanks for saying you have room for us.

To Z, Mrs. Z, Monty, Bob Wells and everyone else: Thanks for concern, your assistance and your phone calls.

Gee, we're back on topic for the thread. Wow.

There are only two kinds of boaters, those who have broken a propeller and those who are going to.

I, Mrs. Kane, do solemnly swear.....

Hey, if they can't fix it do I get my V drive?

Sorry, Kaneboats, is it too early to joke?

MrsZ

Mrs. Kane, I think I would probably want a V drive if I had a 6-pack of little ones too! :) When we looked at the boat show it was very difficult to pass by all of that awsome room! But my first love is slaloming and I didn't want to give that up for the room.

But... then your last boat wouldn't even be your last boat anymore!!

She's in the care of a specialist now. Drove to Panama City and back this a.m. to have her admitted. All we can do now is pray for the best. Please do not send flowers-- make a donation to your favorite charity in lieu (or if you don't have one then Ed's Yuengling cooler).

I forgot to mention that Mike was her first visitor. He didn't have to wait and got there right when visiting hours started. The specialist said she's definitely going to make a full recovery but couldn't say when she would be ready to come home or resume full activities.

You have to quit rubbing her beam with toilet paper, it is usually the cause, or so they say.

No No No, we were talking about the boat, how did this get misconsturde? Was it Eds shorts post? I bet that's what it was.
