I am pretty new to Wakesurfing.. went yesterday for 2nd time this year... 3rd time overall..
I have 06LSV and fill center locker, 750 in rear side and put a few peeps on that side. Wakeplate between half and 3/4 up.. We played with speed some yesterday.. I rode at high 9's to 10. With my buddy, I sped up a little to 11's and lengthened the wave a little.. I would like a couple more people next time... 2 wives and a driver... not too much weight on the side...

2007 Moomba LSV

Gravity III updgraded to 750's in the rear lockers.

Ride with center and surfside rear 100% full and wakeplate up 100% @ 10mph

WHAT NEXT?
I've only been out twice so I am tweaking my setup.... thinking of adding one of my original oem 400lb sacs to the surfside and moving human ballast (usually 2 people, 350lbs) up front... thoughts?

Sounds like you have the exact same setup as me. try wakeplate 100% up and put one of your peeps up front.

also, I just installed my 750's and the fill hose barely reached the connection on the sac. Did you have to lengthen the fill hose?

Great to have a wakesurf area. My setup;
07 LSV
750# full in rear surfside replacing stock bag
center 400# full
350# tube sac on seats of surf side.
I have noticed that this boat needs more weight in the front so this year i am planning on adding some lead in the bow.
I have also surfed a friends XLV a lot and that boat needs even more weight up front. THe weight also needs to be on the surf side of the bow. Too much weight in front center seems to hurt the wake also. Both boats can produce large wakes, but that does not mean that they have drive. I honestly have not been able to get as good of a wave out of the LSV as i did with my previous LS and i believe that is because there is too much weight in the rear. Just ordered a new Shred Stixx Jamako so i can't wait to get out soon and play with my setup and new board!

Ok, I just started wakesurfing but I cannot get to ride without rope. Let me give you guys an idea of what my set up was and what you guys would recommend....

06 Mobius LSV

I ride on port side (as I am regular)

-550 lbs in Rear storage on port side
-250 lbs on floor on the port side (I have 2 of those 250 fly high fat sac but only used one)
-400 lbs in ski locker
-375 lbs tube on the floor above the ski locker into the bow area.

plus 2 people sitting on rear port side.

The plate's up 100 percent.

riding at 11.5 mph... maybe I should have tried slower next time? But I want to focus on the ballast set up first then will play with speed.

Should I just move the 375 lbs tube onto the seat of port side? and put another 250 lbs on bow seat or floor?

I have got my wakeboarding wake all dialed in since 2 years but I just got new 08 hyperlite broadcast (forgot the size but it's the middle sized one.) this recently Christmas so this Summer would be my first summer season with full opportunity to wakesurfing after a long day of wakeboarding.

any helps will be appreciated! Thanks!

My buddies 08' Outback V
750 on the surf side and 450-550 on the seat (surf side).
We had the stock 450 in the floor and a 550 on top in the walkway but found the wake shapes up better without a lot of weight up front.
So we emptied the 550 in the walk way and we had a great wake.
There was only two adults (425lbs ish) and 3 kids (100lbs).
A few more people and we would have had a even better wave.

Oldschool landlock and a newer landlock.
We couldn't have been happier.

Testing out the new and improved ballast on the 08 LSV Wednesday.
I stacked and plumbed 450's on top of the factory 450's in the ski lockers 900lbs each side. Then tied into the factory 450 in the bow and plumbed another 550 for the walkway, 1100 up front. May need more up front so I'll keep you posted.
We are hoping for some big waves.

Wheres all the pics of the set-up and wakes?

You guys should post pics of your surf wake too, that way you can compare yours to someone elses with the same boat and different weight setup.

When I get my 07 LSV broke in I'm going to start with the ski locker full, I have the intergrated bow sac that will be maybe half full, 750 in the rear port locker, 400 to 500 lb bag on the floor against the port side seats, and a small 150lb bag under the port side rear seat. That should be enough to allow me to move things around and get it dialed how I want it.

Within my OutBack I run two 150lb Launch Pad Blocks down the surf side, two 150lb Launch Pad Blocks in the surf side corner and then two 85lb Launch Pad Blocks where ever I need them. It is not much but it works. I wakeboard and wakeskate more than I surf right now. I just picked up wakesurfing this year, I have only been out like 5 or 6 times this year but I am pumped!.. That is for sure. I am liken it.

Razzman, I am trying to deal with a similar scenario as you. I have my factory 275 LBS bags and want to use them from time to time to adjust wakes or add more weight on one side for surfing. I am thinking about putting the quick connect foa tsunami pump on them and the using a cigarette adapter for power. This way I can remove everything if it is not needed. Just hook the Tsunami to the top to fill and then to the bottom to empty. I know this will be messy, but I do not want to do more plumbing and this will keep it removeable.

I guess that's one way to do it.

I was thinking of disconnecting the bag, adding y adapters with directional flow valves to the fill/drain fittings. Then and have four hoses, two long and two short with the quick connects on both. Leave on set of long/short in the starboard locker and run the other set to port that way i could have the bag in either locker and still fill/drain off the starboard pump. You'd only have to flip the y adapter flow valves to whatever side the bag is on.

One season into it, but here's the 2-bits:
Base models have the biggest surf challenge because they're lighter. My V is good (not optimal) for skiing because at 3000 lbs it's one of the lighter V's. If you a) don't ski and b) have $$, buy an LSV (or even XLV). Gain 300 dry and 320 more capacity; ttl 620 lbs. Big difference. For V surfing, I run 2x350 launch pads rear; factory Gravity 1 middle (400); wake plate up, 9.8 MPH (any faster/slower, worse results). That combined = 1100 lbs ballast. Add two onboard peeps and your at the manufacturers stated max capacity of 1480. As has been discussed, going ropeless is also a matter of skill and technique. With the above, younger/lighter - no problem. Adults - with skill and technique. This said, when one of those passengers sat his 220 lbs on the edge of the boat behind the driver, and leaned outward, holding an additional rope attached to the tower, the wake was INCREDIBLE! A shear, clear, wall of water, with a lip that had virtually no froth. You should have seen the wide eyed amazement on my 14 yr old when that 220 shifted.
Bottom line: no ski; go big; no prob.

2006 Mobius LSV. Just got a 750# fat sac and tried it today for the first time. Here's my set up:

750# bag on surf side full
400# bag in front/center ski locker full
wakeplate halfway (gauge is straight up)
10 mph

Below is a pic of the wave with this set up taken today. Looks very surfable! Only me (175#) and my two kids (weighing 125# total) on the boat. Will only get better with more human ballast on board. Water was a chilly 53 degrees so I didn't get in it.

Al

As long as you switch the valves the second bag will drain fine. I havent tried to fill and empty both bags at the same time with both valves open.

Yes, the cooler on the port side sucks.... Currently when we surf regular, we put an additional 400 on the port side seat above the cooler.... I was thinking of stuffing it infront of the 750 in the rear locker up to the cooler to see how it works... but i really hate have bags out on deck.

I was also thinking about runnning plumbing for another bag in the bow seats... right now i use another 400 on top of the surf side bow seat and fill with a tsunami pump...

05' LSV with the Gravity III ballast system

I’ve been Surfin with the center bag full, rear bag full on the surf side and the other about 1/4 full with as many people as you can get on the surf side and running at about 10 to 11 mph. It’s been workin pretty good for me.

However, I saw some posts of people putting a 750 lb bag in the rear (I guess just the one bag? Correct me if I’m wrong) this set up sounds pretty good, but I recently found a new bag that should fit perfectly in any Moomba, the fly high enzo sack weighing in at whopping 1450 lbs a piece. It’s made for V Drives that have an opening in the rear seat bulkhead that leads under the passenger benches.

I’m sure with this amount of weight you would definitely need some additional bags upfront to counteract but it sounds pretty wild.

Just wondering if anyone has tried this bag out yet?

Wake plate all the way up I think. Speed @ 11-11.3. I was really suprised how far back we were able to surf. I was back almost 25' at one point and could surf easily back up to the boat. We had a lot of fun once we got it dialed. The wifes Uncle and Cousin (the one surfing) used to shape ocean boards and I talked them into shaping a few wake surfs for me. Well now they are hooked and starting a buisness here locally and I have the pleasure of helping do all the R&D. It was hard to get really agressive because we didn't have and decking yet, but man, what fun boards.
I'm trying to get a couple enzo sacks ordered and will get picks of the install and wake from those 1450lbs bad boys! I'm told they fit really well in the LSV. We'll see. That should eliminate sacks on the seat and floor except in the bow. Fingers crossed.

Wally, not to preach, but to remind that with your planned ballast, and factoring a couple of 175# passengers, your 2350 lbs exceeds the boats 1400 lb capacity by 950 lbs (75%)! I have been following this thread, and with the exception of my prior post, there have been no references to manufacturer capacity rating. I’m gathering it’s generally viewed as irrelevant? Rough tally would be most responders overload, some severely, in an effort to produce the desired wake. I posted once before a question about capacity relevance but got zero feedback:
https://forum.moomba.com/showthread.php?t=3980

Given I’m not fully aware of the risks associated with overloading, I run to capacity only (2x350 + Gravity I 400) = 1100 plus 2 passengers = cap limit of 1480 lbs for Outback V.

Ed, at ~600 lbs overweight (1600+peeps), gather current wake result requires going heavier if you're looking at the 1300#er?

Wally

I wasn't able to hit the lake : ( this weekend.

ED G, i got it used for $80 bucks (worth every penny). I dont think they make em any more. Thanks again ED, you were my original menotor in setting my boat up for surfing, now my wakeboard collects dust.

Its ok moombabound, preach on brotha. It is a crap load of ballast, but the scary part is I have actually ran more that 2300lbs. As long as you are careful, really carefull on turns, and pay attention to rogue waves you will be fine.

I think I heard someone on here say that surfers have always been rule benders. I have been running 2000lbs plus for two seasons now with no problems, just surf, sun, and fun. I have had a few convos with the lake police who are not sure what we are doing, but are cool after we chat.

I finally got the hang of it this past weekend. We had boats following along watching, and then coming over to talk to us afterwards. I guess part of that was because it was 8pm and some poor guy had sunk his brand new Dodge at the ramp...and we were all forced to drop off our truck drivers and meet at another marina. That sure is a conversation starter, and with people never having seen a surfer before we were pretty popular.

Anyway, I hadn't realized how FUN this would be. I'm hooked. Now my friends want to learn too. I just need to work on tweaking the wake. It looks pretty washy, and I have to stay pretty darn close to the boat. Heck, I almost get on the platform if I'm not careful. Any more tips for an XLV? I have the port rear loaded, and the front loaded. May put one of the stock 400s in the back corner too...

Hmm. I hesitate to put that much water in the same area as my amps...they are all in the storage area, and a few could get wet possibly. Maybe I'll try it where the removable seat goes-we always just put the cooler there.

I also need to extend the lines for the 750s-I saw some pics of someone else that had done it. I can't fill them quite fill yet because the hose is too short.

Ed, sorry to have confused. Thought the "#" symbol was internationally recognized as the pound sign. "Peeps" Moomba Forum term.

Capacity has to do with listing/trimming WITHOUT taking on water, not how much it'll support when swamped. Passenger capacity is the more user-friendly people equivalent, based on a formula. Anyhow, don't rely on this forum, it's all fully explained on the US Coast Guard web site if you wish to clarify.

I translate your reply, that it sounds like it's housekeeping only...similar weight, less hastle/floorspace, and is not intended to augment your current setup.

Update:

I was able to fit the 400lb bag (was able to fill it probably with 350lbs) on the port side behind the cooler (with a tsunami). It extended into the rear compartment and filled vertically in front of the 750lb'r (if that makes sense). I also put one more 400lb'r near the observer seat along with the 400lb'r center (so thats a total of about 1900lbs). Here is a few snapshots of the wave with the driver +1 on the sun pad @ 10.3 mph wakeplate 100% up. The wave is pretty steep, so I am going to look at moving people to the front.

I was finally able to get a pic although it's not a good one.
Setup is 07 LSV, 750 in rear locker, 400 in ski locker, and maybe 300 in bow, 4 adults total in the boat and 1 of them is sitting on the sun deck as you can see in the pic. Wake plate is all the way up and we are running 10.5 to 11mph.

The wake was better the next day with a much longer pocket but I don't have a pic. I filled the bow to capacity at 700+lbs and added a 150lb sac in the rear corner under the seat. It made a huge difference.

What options do Outback V owners have when upgrading ballastt sizes?

The rear lockers are smaller than the LSV so are the stock 400lb bags the only ones that fit?

goose, i had a 800lb launch pad in the rear--2003 lsv-(old boat)it is oversize so the bag just keeps the water in place-the sides would limit how much water and weight you could fit

What does everyone use for bow weight? I was looking at putting in the Fly High Bow Sac (800lbs) in the boat. I wasn't going to plumb anything to it, but just throw a pump overboard and fill up the sac. Would that work?

I was also looking at buying two fat bricks to move around the boat and help with surfing. I saw that some people purchased the single 750sac, but I don't always want to disconnect and reconnect the bags. I can keep my back sacs full and just fill these up. Pain in the a@@ or would it be good?

2005 Outback LSV
800# Port side v drive compartment (2 400# bags stacked) compartment door stays open
400# in ski locker
125# 1 girl in bow (port side)
500#-540# about 3 people on port side.
wakeplate at 3/4. The more wakeplate the steeper the wake!
11.5 mph
Board: Shred Stixx Thresher Shredder
Adding Fresh Air Exhaust tomorrow.

The wake is good but fairly short. I am going to try putting some weight forward (on the floor next to the driver) to try to lengthen the wake. For my hull I think you can only get so much wake out of it!

I surfed a 2008 malibu wakesetter 23 LSV yesterday... Wow nice wake!!! Clean big and long!

I have an 800lb launch pad in my v-drive compartment (only holds around 700#'s) and the stock 400 in the floor. After going out this weekend for the first time without some of my big friends in the boat (2 of them are 275#'s+) I realize this just isnt enought as the wave was not nearly as surfable. I have 2 250's im taking with me this weekend to try out. I'll try and get some pics this time.

I wouldnt worry so much for the bag as I would the bag busting the fiberglass lip surrounding it...yikes.

I was thinking about putting a 750 in my 2002 LSV but worried I might bust it up if filled.

If you have a vent line connected to the bag it will prevent that. Once the bag fills and it reaches a positive pressure inside the bag, it will force the excess water out of the vent.

Tried some different things today. 800lb sack full as I could get it in rear locker (goofy side), 250lb on seat behind driver, 400 full in ski locker and 3 people in the boat. Tried moving people around with litte success and with weight up front the wave got worse. I remembered Jesse telling me he only filled his ski locker 1/4 or 1/2??? Well the more I took out of the front sack the better the wave got. With 2 people on the sun deck and front sack empty it was awsome, best i've had so far. Guess the outback V's dont like weight up front. Going out again Monday so i'll see if I can get it a little more dialed. Oh wake plate was 3/4 of the way up.

Anybody with an XLV wanna share their setup? I can get some periodic slack but never more than 10-15 seconds. I am a bigger guy (220), but I must be doing something wrong.

After of few times out this is what I have found to produce the best wake on our 07 OB V.

Center/Front Ballast - Full 400lbs
Left storage - Fat Sack 550lb
Left center of the boat (on the floor) - 2/3 full (approx 350 lbs) 2nd Fat Sack

Only two passengers in the boat this time out (hence the added sack on the floor) weighing in at approx 250lbs.

Total weight was approx 1550 (slightly over the max, risked it a little. Felt very stable and handled fine)...

Ran at 9.5 MPH and had wake plate full up.

I was able to free ride indefinitely and found the pocket to extend at least 4 feet! Started getting in some tricks and even did a free ride with my favorite beer (see photo). ;-)

I have some video I'll post soon and also a pic from the platform of our wake.

Is there such a thing as putting in too much weight?

Once I get back up to the lake, in a week or two, this will be my setup on my 22SSV.

750lbs bag in the rear locker, 350lbs bag on the rear seat, 750lbs bag on side wall on the floor, 1100lbs bag down the center of the boat, and finally a 350lbs bag up in the bow.

So thats 3300lbs, best case scenario. Probably will only get 650 out of the one bag in the rear locker.

Anyone tried running this weight in any of their boats? Results? (noticeably better than 2500lbs or so? Or is it a case of diminishing returns after a certain point?)

I Have 0 experience with a Supra, but I'll guess that 1100 in center might need to be played with some.. I'd filling, set PP and ride... watch the wave and switch center to empty...watch to see if if improves or worsens..

That much in front/center will prob make the wave longer, but not sure if it will allow the boat to list as much..
again, I am guessing.. as I have an LSV.
Congrats on the 22SSV!

Regarding:

Is there such a thing as putting in too much weight?...22SSV...So thats 3300lbs.

Only a concern if this statement in the owners manual means anything to you: "Capacity: 2100 lbs".

Live long and prosper.

Yeah, I'm having the exact same problem. 15 - 20 seconds of slack max behind my '08 XLV. I filled all three ballast sacks completely and had 3 passengers on the surf side. I had the perfect pass set on 11 mph. Any suggestions?

Hey Byron, don't know where you ride but just a word to the wise ... Dont get CAUGHT with peeps on the sun deck! It's illegal in Cali and they DO enforce it, i know because we got caught on a buddies Sanger last year doing that very thing. BIG ticket (considered bodily endangerment or something like that), and they pulled a VERY thorough safety inspection! OOPS, another ticket! Turned out to be an expensive day! :(

Thanks for the heads up. Guess i've been real lucky because a sherrif went right by us last time we were out and didnt look twice at me, YIKES!!!! My winter project is to plumb in more weight to that side of the boat so hopefully i'll still get the results im getting without anyone on the deck. Thanks again!!!

Please show us some pictures of what your wake look like - with you surfing it.

There might not be anything wrong with your set-up. It could be as simple as your stance or position on the board.

What's your weight and what board are you using?

Three sacks: front, rear corner and where is the third?

I am 5'10" - 210lbs amd am using a 2008 Hyperlite Broadcast 5'6" board. I have both back sacks (left and right) filled as well as the front sack. If we get some decent weather, I will take a few pics and post them.;)

What is the problem with having the same wake size on both sides? If it is big enough to surf on, why would it matter that the other side is also the same? I dont really understand why listing is required?

kaneboats
10-09-2008, 10:27 PM
With all due respect Mrs. Z, some of us displace a bit more water than you (and the rest of the skinny Z's) and more than a ski wake is necessary for some good surfin'. You are absolutely correct that whether the other side wake is the same size doesn't matter if the surf side is adequate for you-- but this guy was 210 lbs. and at about 9.5 mph. he's not going to keep moving without some serious curl pushing him along.

2004 Mobius LS

Stock front and rear ballast full
250 lbs bag between back seat and motor
540 lbs bag on rider's side
540 lbs bag across back seat & angled on top of other 540 sac
Wake plate just below half
9.8 MPH on Perfect Pass

Creates a nice meaty wake with good push and a lengthy pocket

Supra_Launch21V

Launch 21V (sorry I poach every now and then on the Moomba site)
750lb bags in the rear
400lb bag in the front
4 - 85lb cubes on the side near the tower back leg

All passengers to the rear

Wakeplate setup at around 35% @ 10.4 to 10.6 mph

The wake is great. I fill up the rider side only ... 1/2 of the bag up front.

The cubes really help tweak the wake. You can stagger where you want them.

Kids to the side, adults in the corner.

google search on video.google.com wayne roger bev wakesurfing mississippi to see.

Here are some pics from Friday. Had a pretty good wave going... Here is our setup.

07 LSV
750 in locker on surf side
500 on top of seats on surf side
400 in ski locker
400 in bow on top of ski locker
400 on top of that pushed up to the bow
so.. thats about 1200 in the bow and 1200 in the back

wake plate half way
11 mph

we run a 750 in the rear left side locker(nothing right side), 440 on the seat, 400 in the factory locker about center of the boat and 2 440's up front and wakeplate anywere from 1/2 to full down depending on conditions, all in a supra launch 20ssv. makes a killer wake, but don't try and cruise across the lake...
shows 2470lbs, but I would suspect with air and other issues, it's more like 2200lbs. rubrail in the left corner is usually underwater.

the 340hp ext-cat motor is a workhorse :)
