Cool.. That thing will tow! We have an 08 just like yours but LWB at work. I drove a 14' enclosed trailer to New Mexico back in October in it and it never missed a beat.

The only bad thing about a diesel is, you feel that you must get a 15,000 lb trailer to pull. I have have 2 F-250s and could not even tell that I had anything behind when towing my boat.

Well in our house it is a little different, we have the Gas 5.3L in the Silverado and the wife has the Turbo Direct Injected 1.9L Diesel in her Jetta. She went from an Avalanche Z-71 with 411 rear axle ratio and 13mpg to a Diesel at 41mpg! And she is NOT a slow driver! But it would be nice if GM would put a diesel in the 1500s. We had a 1500HD Crew Cab before the Avalanche and it was soooooo hard to park it!

Pike,

I love that gray and black color scheme! 8) That was my first pick but the rest of the family voted me down. Everyone was stuck on blue.

Ya thats the one thing I am bummed about...I buy my first diesel when diesel fuel goes over $4 a gallon  I paid 4.24 the other day It sucks but at least I'm not getting 8 mpg like I got when towing my Moomba with my 5.4 gas F250!!

I am glad that this came up. I am in the market for a new truck I currently have the 03' Dodge Hemi. I was considering the new Dodge Diesel Mega Cab. The only reason for diesel, if for the Towing. My Hemi really does not give me the power to tow. When the boat is full of gas, toys, etc. it really bogs down. I thought the Hemi would be no problem. I was wrong. How is the new Hemi's comparded to the old ones? Does anyone know.

I also was considering the new Dodge Mega Cab, what sold me was the reputation on the Allison Transmission in the GMC. Both kick ass trucks for towing but from what I hear the GMC may last a bit longer. :D

We used to own a Chevy z-71 Avalanche with the optional 4:11 rear axle ratio. It had no problems towing the BIG boat (6600lbs) with the 5.3L engine. It was the terrible gas milage we got when we weren't towing. Almost any upgrade from a 1/2 truck (3:45 rear axle ratio) to a 3/4 or 1 ton truck is going to also get you a 3.73 rear axle ratio standard with a 4:10/11 ration as an option or even standard. Just keep this in mind when you find the thing eating gas all the time. Now when Chevy finally puts a diesel in the 1500 like I have been hearing then we might have to go and check one out!

Ford and Dodge will have 1/2 ton trucks with diesels by 2010. Unfortunately, the Dodge will not have the same diesel that is in the Sprinter Van.

I was looking at the 2500 Dodge Mega Cab Diesel. Right now I can get 0% for 60 months. I think I want to trade in my Hemi. As much as I love my Hemi, its just not for towing.

Love my 7.4 liter (454 cid) 1999 Chevrolet Suburban. Bought it used in 2002 with 46,000 miles. Today has 128,000 miles. Made three trips to Colorado and one to Florida with my wife and three sons. Pulls a small utility wagon and our Outback. Still runs well. Nothing out of the ordinary for maintenance and replacement from normal wear and tear. Fuel consumption is on the high side (10 - 12 mpg), but I'm not making a loan or lease payment on top of the cost of the gasoline.

Sled,

Mrs. Z's little itty bitty 4 cylinder 1.9L TDI diesel makes 180lb-ft torque, if you double the size of this engine to a V-8 you will have 3.8L V-8 engine making 360lb-ft of torque!!!!! . So if they can borrow something from Izusu (like the big truck engine) only smaller with around 300 - 350lb-ft they will match what the 5.3 has and surely the mileage would be better. And beware BMW is bringing their diesels over soon too!
And yes that is NOT a Dodge the Sprinter is and has been a Mercedes delivery truck in Europe for years! It just has a different badge on it now! I remember seeing them over there with a solid brown paint scheme and the letters of UPS or something like that on them.

Lots of cars like the Porsche 944 (4 cyl.) vs the 928 (v-8), the BMW 2.5L inline six and the 5.0 V 12 use the same valves, bores, rods etc. For some reason they never have the same compression ratios or cam profiles. They tune the smaller engines for more power so I see your point. I don't see why they wouldn't if they used the EXACT same equipment why you wouldn't have close to the same amount. You would be turning a heavier flywheel, transmission and driveline so you would lose some power there. Have you seen the Audi Lemans cars!!!!!!! Talk about diesel power 650 HP/ 811lb-ft torque out of a 5.5 L V-12.

Careful in what you are saying!!!! You know she reads these post now. Mrs. Z will be looking on the internet for some engine kits for her car! No problem except I will be the one having to put them on!!!!

I test drove a MB E series with my sister this weekend. The 3.2L CDI diesel had 400 ft/lb of torque (according to the sticker). Due to the design of a diesel, it is common for them to have high torque numbers.

In the local paper, Dodge is now showing 0% for 72 months. You may want to check on that in your area.

Freightliner makes the body and, yes, they have the MB engine. UPS runs those in the rural areas with long mileage and tough to get into roads. One thing about them though, their filters foul up real easy and you have to be careful where you fill up. The nice thing is the mph they get.... for a delivery truck.

Yes here in the states, but this has been out in Europe for years. I used to work with the Plant in Austria that made the Chrysler Mini Van for Europe and I believe that is where it is produced over there.

I talked to my guy out here in Las Vegas. He told me that Dodge usually does not make that type of deals on Desiels. I really need to jump on this. I can either get 0% for 60 months or 1.9% up to 72 months.

sled,
is this becoming the Mega cab thread? i have a mega cab with a hemi. paid cash i had a choice between quad cab diesel manual trans or mega cab hemi. both were the same price.

i have a friend with a 06 dodge regular cab diesel. he has close to 100k on it, and gets about 20-22. he pulls a 40' travel trailer when he travels for work, also pulls other construction related things, but mostly he is light. i don't know what his towing MPG is.

i mostly travel light, i get about 14 MPG, towing the moomba home last saturday (with Z cargo on), 65 miles at avg 72mph, i got 8 MPG.

but for the long trips with the family (we have 4 kids) you can't beat the space. the kids fight for who gets to sit in back! i guess a suburban has more space in terms of rider capacity. (don't remember who the guy in FL with 6 kids)

I did it. I traded in my Hemi. She was a great truck I got the new 07' Desiel Mega Cab Truck. Picked her up on Saturday. WOW!!!!! I really like the towing power. I got a kiler deal on it. $30,000. This will be my first desiel. I also found out the Dodge is not going to make the Mega Cab anymore. They are going to redesign the truck.

Exactly! I found Diesel for 4.09 a gallon! What a great deal!! I don't care how much it costs, diesel is the way to go!

Just filled up the wifes diesel Jetta! 4.09 a gallon here in the pan handle!!!! If it didn't average 41 mpg we would have to think about this, but the BMW averages 19 mpg and what does premium cost now??? So it is still saving us money, just not as much as it used too!

You know we use MicroSoft money and yes that is the grocery bill for 1 month!!!! I go every week and aim for 250 bucks!!!! Last week the wife got loose in the grocery store and spent 370!!! The next day I was making my lunch for work (an attempt to save money to pay for this new boat) and I couldn't find anything for my lunch. I asked her what did you get me for lunch, "nothing I forgot!" That is why I have to buy the food, I would starve.

I think that would feed the wife and I for about 2 months!!! We go once a week at about 115!! Are you eating filet magnon every night!?!?!? I want to come to your house for dinner!!!

zegm
04-09-2008, 03:56 PM
No just frozen pizza's!!!
We also have to kids that like to eat, well they are skinny so maybe they don't eat that much so we feed them alot and they tend to leave much on their plates. And I should say that includes cleaning, laundry and bathroom supplies. Have you seen how much a jug of Tide cost??? With kids it seems like the busiest machine in the house if the washing machine!
I honestly try to get food for a decent dinner everynight, hamburger is the highest grade of meat I usually get. Everynow and them we treat ourselves to a STEAK.............chopped steak!

Our Grocery bill ranges from $150.00 a week to $250.00 a week. That does not include the Organic BS food we order. That's about $40.00 a week. I also go into the frig after a $350.00 grocery bill and nothing to eat. How does that work?
