Boat Exhaust

Hi Everyone,

I have spent numerous days reading pretty much every post in here. I recently purchased a 2008 Outback V and can't wait to get my break in over with and start seeing some warm temps on water!

With so many helpful people on here I had one very important (to me) question that hasn't seemed to be answered yet. Is it posible to add performance/loud sick sounding exhaust that you would expect to hear from a Beefy V-8 engine? I mean it doesn't sound bad as is but I can't ever just let things be! :twisted:

Also, I may have missed it somewhere but are there any jamborees held close to the Texas area and if so where and when usually?

Any riders in the DFW area that wanna hook up on the lakes this summer let me know, I'm still very new to the sport (wakeboarding) but I absolutely LOVE it and wouldn't mind some pointers or just another group of wakeboarding enthusiests to hang out with.

Be careful modifying yer exhaust. I've been doing some reading and I think they're gonna crack down on boaters w/ loud motors. Depending on where you live, you may get by for a couple seasons, but don't throw the old cans away. You might have to put them back on

the exhaust are pretty much wide open pipes now... the muffle is because they exit under water. You could either do some kinda weird pipe extension off exits now or go with modifying your engine hatch and exit pipes up top like the flat bottom river racers, heck just remove the engine hatch and put a pair of chromed tubed headers out the top side :shock: you could definetly have everyone on lake hating your guts with an early morning pass :lol: one thing to consider is sometimes back pressure from exhaust is used to cool valves. Some of the boys use to cut out the exhaust on their V-6 outboards above the waterline and they do sound baaaaad !
Mighty nice boat to do this with, maybe just get a second go fast ride :wink:

Ok...Ok so the loud exhaust is a bad idea i'll spend that money on something else I guess. A freind of mine warned me that people aren't exactly a fan of it and I can appreciate that I suppose but every vehicle I've ever owned minus my second vehicle (honda accord) had some kind of exhaust system... Any how Lance I live in Grapevine about 5 mins. from the lake and have always been curious about lewisville lake, I know the water here in Grapevine suprisingly enough can get pretty choppy which made for a MISERABLE day on the water with my old boomerang. Let me know if hooking up at either one of the lakes this summer sounds like a good idea. Always down for meeting new peeps.

Yeah man we'll definately have to hook up at some point this summer. Lewisville is pretty good for boarding if you get back into some of the coves out of the wind. We mainly get our boarding in during the week when there's few people out there, and the weekends are more for hangin out in the boat with cold ones cuz it's way too busy with all the boats.

Were looking at the fresh-air set up, we surf alot but no complaints yet on fumes? is there a real problem with this?

Yep, search sd2 here & you'll find the coast guard tape. I too did not believe.

It will end your "sun" headaches.

Im no rocket engineer, but as a precaution, I always surf with the windshield open for greater air flow.

The study on teak surfing (not to be confused with wake surfing) shows a smoke test that confirms what Ed was saying. If you had little kids surfing it might be an issue but with a life jacket there is no risk of drowning. Mild CO poisioning would be dizziness and headaches so when Ed after a long wake surf run goes and gets Tylenol, a beer and lies down you know why.

I like it, the black tower and speaker cans. At first when you had the cover on I thought the whole boat was black :lol:

very nice boat, I was thinking of adding a black tower to my boat instead of the usual polished. I also like the way you did the Nascar thing. I usually put them on the side windows, but I like your way better :D

Smokedog you answered the question without the smoke. Your attached study shows the average CO exposure to a wake surfer at ten feet off to be around 17ppm and they properly concluded that the CO concentration with or without the FAE is relatively low. The reason is the NIOSH Exposure Limit for CO is 35ppm Time Weighted Average (TWA) which is an 8 hour period.

So your saying that a wakesurfer would only be subjected to 1/2 what is considered harmful in an 8 hr period?

The study did conclude that the exposure was 17 ppm that was below the 35 ppm that is used by industry to keep concentrations below during a typical 8 hour work day. The concentration would be much higher right behind the transom and for little ones or people near the water surface (i.e. tube, kneeboard) in that area they would experience high concentrations. In contrast, the pollution in many large cities can exceed 17 ppm. The bottom line is don't let people ride at or below transom level within 10 feet of the boat except for getting up on a board where the time spent in that zone is hopefully rather short.

The effects of carbon monoxide in parts per million are listed below:

35 ppm (0.0035%) Headache and dizziness within six to eight hours of constant exposure
100 ppm (0.01%) Slight headache in two to three hours
200 ppm (0.02%) Slight headache within two to three hours
400 ppm (0.04%) Frontal headache within one to two hours
