Tips for Changing Impeller on LSV

Hey,
I have changed my impeller on my 04 Outback, but not yet on my LSV...
Can anyone provide some helpful tips on approach to removing / replacing the Impeller. I have heard some say an impeller puller helps.
I started last weekend and gave up on one bolt! The muffler system is quite in the way.. almost think it would be easier to remove all the muffler and then go at it..

Is the left side easier than the right side to get into? I talked to someone who said lay on top of the motor(put a life jacket or something on top)
This is the one thing I miss from my Outback... it was a breeze!

Any help/suggestions will be appreciated.

Mine's an '04 like he used to have. You can tell by the pics of the motorbox those V's are gonna be a pain in the arse when it comes to some of the service that needs to be done.

No way man, I heard of a guy one time, he like fell into his engine compartment on a LSV when changing his like impeller, and he was like never heard form agian. :shock:

QB12 mentioned in another thread that this tool really helps with pulling the impeller. I haven't tried it yet so I don't know how well it works, but I ordered one to use for my next change.

I remove my impeller off my 04 LSV when I put it away for winter. That being said I first remove both ballast bags and the two inner walls (on each side of the engine). With the engine compartment totally open it is not so bad, this is how I change oil, drain the block and finally get that impeller.
I remove the impeller housing (3 allen bolts) and 2 hoses. Once you have the
complete impeller housing off it is much easier. 2 small screwdrivers on each side of the impeller, kind of work it out. I can't imagine removing the impeller without first removing the complete impeller assembly.

I do the same as Bruce, reomove the entire pump and then remove the impeller. I like to check the shaft bearings/seals and give it a good cleaning once a year.

Not a bad idea on taking the whole housing off.. I can see that is a definite benefit..

With the housing off it is really easy to grease the rudder (there is a grease zerk hidden by the housing)

ive replaced the impellar with out removing the housing--a little bit of a big pain in the A.. to do with out twisting arms backwards. but how do you get the housing off? and is that how you are able to replace the belt?

3 Large allen bolts, 1 small one on a bracket and the 2 hoses.
It doesn't have anything to do with the belt.

Did you have trouble getting the housing to pop off the pulley first time? Seems like it is painted/stuck to...
any suggestions? I am going to spend a few minutes tapping with hammer/screwdriver to try to pop loose.. just dont want to damage water pump

UPDATE..
Since I could not get the water pump housing off, I went forward. having the bracket loose so you could move the housing around on the impeller made removal easier. I am guessing that heat/paint has the water pump bonded to the pulley...
Next time, I think I'll remove the bolt to the bracket and stretch/reach to get it...
I put in needle nose pliers and held on to the impeller and pulled while rocking the pump.. the constant movement made it easy to pull out..

btw, old impeller with 153 hrs was perfect. Got a good spare now.

Changed trans fluid too. just waiting til I can crank the engine to get v drive oil warm enough to vacuum out..
Oh, and I have misplaced my keys too! having a fun day! :oops:

So on the way back to boat storage, refusing to be outdone by the loss of a key, I stopped in Auto Zone and got a replacement ignition... Had it installed in 10 minutes and went by the lake for a shake down run..
FEEL Better now! Hope to go ride tomorrow.

Yeah, the first time I tried to pull the pump free of the harmonic balancer it was near impossible to free the pump. After I finally freed the pump loose from the harmonic balancer, I used some emery cloth to polish the harmonic balancer and the pump and now it pops off really easily. First time is just an uphill battle until you reach the cliff!!

I was back out in the canal yesterday clearing out more saw grass or whatever that stuff is called. Floating islands of grass that block the canal. Couldn't get much work done as all the boats going by kept me distracted! That and these big ole Ospreys that would swoop down for sticks and spanish moss they carried back to make those massive nests!

Oh, yeah,
The keys were in my truck.. It was on a road trip yesterday with some co-workers. I called them before they left town and asked were the keys in my console.. they did not see them... they had fallen between seat and console. :oops:
SO, now i have 4 keys and an extra ignition switch!
Moral of story. (many) 1. have a spare key hidden on boat
2. If you ever get somewhere without a key, go to autozone... $10 saves the day
3. You can never have too many keys.

We need to start planning now, since this will be on the beach do you see any reason for anyone to bring their boats? I don't want salt water on mine! OK not the ski boat! I guess I could bring the big one ans anchor it just inside the first sand bar. And who is going to invite Dallas F.? I guess since Ed G is from that area he needs to bring her with him! And because this is a special jamporee we need to leave the wives and kids at home.
Now we only have a month of spring break left so we got to get busy! We often go eat lunch on the beach at this time of year and this is what everyone looks like---- :shock:
