What companies does everyone recommend for insurance?
I have about 6 weeks to find the best rates.

I have to insure 2 boats now, one a 1997 Proline 231 (25ft) and the other will be the new Moomba. I am getting quotes of 800 dollars for the Proline and 400 for the Moomba. I am at a loss of why the older boat cost so much more?

I pay about 400/yr for my Moomba. I'm 26, have a great driving record, the boat sits on the dock in my back yard, and I have a $500 deductible.

zegm - Insurance on my 2007 Outback is Axis Reinsurance through Geico. Annual premium was about $400. Boat value $31,000, trailer value $3,000, and $500 deductible. - Deerfield

I have used Ski Safe since my first boat in 94. They are a company from the NorthEast and they specialize in Tournament type boats. If you plan Ocean, salt water use the rates go up. Also, when getting insurance I found that very few companies cover your boat if it is damaged in a hurricane. My home insurance (USAA) does not cover it even if it is in the garage(during a hurricane). I was paying $230/yr on my MasterCraft with a layup from Dec-Mar with $20K boat, $3K trailer, and $1500 ski equipment.

Don't forget to have enough medical coverage for skiers that now includes the whole gamut of people being towed behind the boat. Also, some insurance companies give a discount for passing a boater safety course. I used the Oregon State on-line program years ago and it took very little time and you print out the diploma. Washington State is now phasing in a boater licensing requirement so I will eventually have to take that test also.

I think everyone forgot what my question/problem is, I don't mind paying 400 dollars for the Moomba, it is the 800 dollars for the 1997 Proline 231 that is causing me fits. This boat is worth 20-25k but the insurance is double. Does anyone have experience with Salt water fishing boats??? I average maybe 6 to 8 trips out in the Gulf a summer (used to do more but the avearge cost of gas for one of these trips is 125 dollars) so I will have to pay 100 dollars for insurance now for each trip!!!! Add the gas, oil and gas in the truck and if will cost me 250 dollars a trip! That makes the fish I catch mighty expensive!!!! :?

Zegm,
Try Progressive. WHen I had outback and SeaDoo, they gave me a combo discount. I pay the same for my LSV as I did for my Outback and SeaDoo... multi-vehicle discount. Also, I did it all online and it was cheaper than through my ALFA ins agent who sold progressive.

I will try that when I get home from work tonight. Right now I have a Progressive agent and the quote is for 584. I just called Allstate and now have it down to 515! I will have to add the other boat when it gets built so I will play with the multiple discount option to see if Allstate also gives this discount and what it will do to the Progressive quote. I just can't believe I have to pay over 1000 dollars a year to go boating. Maybe I should take up flying or something cheaper?

Is the progressive agent your current agent? If not, look at the quote for both online...There was a sizeable difference in online and through an agent for me... I have not filed a claim, but they (progressive) has claims offices in most major cities so I don't mind not having a local agent for this...
I have used them for Motorcycle insurance too..

Better save every penny.. don't want the banker mad do you?

I am going to get on the internet as soon as I get home. Need the extra money now for the gas I am going to use. I am sure we will be on the lake much more now than we were last year. I mean I am going to have the Prettiest Boat out there and I want everyone to know it!

Yeah, shop around. You'll find some good deals. I have the house, two trucks, and the boat, all with the same agency. They made me a pretty decent deal. I only had to change once in the last few years. My old agent retired, and his successor wanted more money. The new agency was glad to have my business.
Congrats on the new boat :D .

My dealer suggested Westmar Marine Insurance. They are nationwide and I think I got a fair deal. I would think prices are different depending on what part of the country you are in. 1-800-252-9597.

seriously guys, contact your Moomba dealer.

a little birdie who is the know says that Boaters Insurance Agency and Skiers Choice have worked out a deal for all Supra and Moomba owners.

It just hasn't been made public - yet.

There is also aspecial deal with Boaters Insurance on any Indmar Powered boat. There is info in your Indmar Operator's Manual.

I am not sure how the boat insurance works in the Us but, here in Canada it was extrememly important that I got specific insurance for pulling people behind the boat. Many marine insurance companies insure the boat but do not allow for proper coverage of the person being pulled.

I just about flipped when I found out.. I ended up signing up for group insurance which is specific to inboard waterski/wakeboard boats because lets face it. they arent your average runabout and shouldnt be treated as such

Just my 2cents

Cheers

Well after spending hours on the phone and the internet my local allstate agent insured my 25ft walk about for 518 a year!!! This is 100 dollars less than anyone else including progressive.
Thanks Ed for the information about the Moomba, I will take that issue up with the dealer when we pick up the boat. I had to change insurance on my big boat due to the fact that it was included in my home policy with a National well known brand. However they jacked my homeowners insurance up another 1200 bucks this year alone for a grand total of 3700 dollars for home owners insurance for one year despite the fact I have never filed a claim with them in the last 5 years. Yes we have the nice weather down here but the insurance companies like to pilage and rape and blame it on hurricanes or something like that. I was able to find insurance for the house at 1600 dollars which is a great deal but they would not include the boat like that other very well known national company that really wished I would drop my policy with them like I did!

Give Boater's Insurance a call or at least check them out. The special deal for Indmar owners means no deductible and Agreed Value (no depreciation). Their number is 800-344-7488. Their website is www.boatersinsurance.com

Thanks! Tomorrow I will write a check to Allstate for my fishing boat. Keep in mind you will not have the issues I have had if you get a fishing boat. I live next to the Gulf and they know I put it in saltwater, that is why the rates are so high for the big boat. However that might be an issue if you say you are going into the Great Lakes too?

The way they word the question is "are you using your boat on inland lakes only" as far as I am concerned any lake in WI is an inland lake.

I got a call from boaters insurance today, and they were about $200/yr higher than BoatUS for my 2007 OB V.

We had our 2007 Outback insured with Progressive.........$338.00 per year. $500,000.00 liability and $125.00 deductable.

The additional event insurance is where I get hosed a bit but I have to have it for pulling the ski show.

We also have our 2007 Sedona pontoon on the same policy at $100.00 per year.
