Alright, I figured since someone started a wakeboard picture post, I would start a skiing picture post as well. Post some of your best skiing pics or your favorite wipeout!!

Here are two pics from last year. The first one is my wife skiing on an ancient 66" O'Brien.
The second one is my dad on his 60th Birthday, yes that's right 60th. I still can not beat him no matter how hard I try!!!

Slack rope = BAD.

To manage that slack, get that front knee bent going into the turn and ski away from the rope. Try to get both feet in the water at the start of the turn. The bent knee will put more ski in the water and make better use of the wing on your fin, if you have one, for deceleration...

This is me at 22' off I believe, 34mph, behind our 20007 Moomba Outback. The fall picture looks very similar, only my hip is deeper in the water and my arms are pushed to the outside. Other bad form ones are huge wheelies on my bad (right side).

The statement about the slack is true, switch edges earlier so that you can push the front of the ski back into the cut and accelerate very quickly out of the turn.

This is me skiing about 1 month before we bought our Outback.

Notice how long it takes the old I/O to drag me out of the water.

This is also before I ever tried a course. I have now done 1 set through a course and got 5/6, 15' off at 30 mph. But now I know how a heroin junky feels after their first hit.

I'll post a comparison video this summer with the Outback. Summer is still schedule for this year?

I think you ski a lot like I do in some ways. Pity you and that huge wake. It makes the pre-turn difficult. I am assuming your Outback is a bit easier.

I am no instructor, but judging by your footage I recommend that you start skiing one handed. You certainly appear to be ready for that. It will help you get wider and maybe turn just a hair quicker. And increase the speed to 32 or 34. You find it more entertaining.

It's already a huge improvement behind the Outback. What a difference!!!

I had my first lesson last summer (after that video) and have a lot to work on. My lesson was at McClintock's in Cambridge, Ontario. Hopefully my improvement will show through on the next video if our lake ever turns to liquid again.

I'm so used to free skiing that I never really tried one-handed turns. It's actually quite difficult to get used to.

My wife and I have some lessons booked at the McGinnis ski school in Florida for next month and my goal is to do 15' off at 32mph including the gates. Hopefully with one handed turns.

I'm also thinking of getting the EZ-Slalom portable course in the spring. I hope it's as easy to use as their website suggests.

sled,

Were you skiing of the waketower or is that just the angle of the camera??

If you can make the course two handed that is quite a feat in my book. It is strange to get used to - onhanded...

I barely remember the first few times I tried. Very tentative. Hand only inches away from the handle.

Lessons are a good idea - I wish I had taken them 30 years ago. Probably would have saved me decades shackled to 15 off @30.

Good luck - once you get it worked out you will wonder how you ever could ski two handed.

Sar, I wanted to say how impressive that cut is on your back side. Also, the balance on the ski is perfect. I threw a few pics out and you can see the back side turn is rather weak.

Zabooda, I hope after looking at your own pictures you can see part of the problem. On you off side you ski is way out of the water indicating that you are not getting the front of the ski down enough to deaccelerate properly. This in turn makes you too fast and makes you want to drift the turn instead of drive it. Look at your arms as well, this only points to the same problem. On your off side your arms and the handle are way up on your chest instead of down by your waist like on your good side. Your good side your hands are down by your waist and pulling strong. The off side shows you are trying to gather up the slack line by raising the rope up to make up for too much speed.

I may be off but that's what I see. Just trying to help. If everyone is willing I would love some feedback this summer as well :D

Your right on Sled. I sit too far back and I continue to work on that. I get really lazy and I don't pull my way through. When I look at my other pictures, (very few since I am always the driver or the camera is put away) I found more where I am further back which is no good. I like where Sar has the ski placement with 2/3 of his ski in the water. At 240 pounds, I'd be snapping ropes, handles or me. A lot of stress for a cut like that for me. I've seen the lightweights cut through and basically push the back end out with a quick snap and it does real well.

Zabooda, I know what you mean about the camera, it never seems to be out when I go for my pull. I'd like to get one of those new HD hard drive video cameras and mount it to the pylon with a follower. Then I would have video to watch and you can make stills from that.

Chefwong. Similar problem, you need to get your handle low and tight to your hips. You also need to drive your hips more agianst the wake not so much in line with the boat. You have to think about it like you are trying to stop the boat by turning perpindicular to the boat.

If that made any sense at all I'd be surprised 8)

That was a picture from a couple years ago, since then I've been out on a 87 supra most weekend mornings upping my game a little.

Since we got an XLV I cant ski on that anymore, it's kind of a "Wakeboard Only" kind of boat. Maybe some recrational.

Zab,
I'm actually right foot forward so my right to left turn is the one that always screws up - and other than some bending back my left to right turns out really sharp.

As we're saying, get the front of the ski in the water, using the whole edge to cut. You can have some fun whipping the turns like that.

Thanks sar. The picture deceived me into thinking your left foot was forward but I'm still impressed. One problem is my ski is an HO Mach that is for skiers on a neutral to rear stance and the HO Turbo is for a forward stance but it was too squirrely at the time. That was 15 year ago do you think I should be looking for a new ski? I think so. Is Father's Day coming up? Thanks for all the advice everyone.

Don't go buying a new ski on my account! New skis are a bunch lighter and stiffer though. I was reasonably content on a 10 year old concept until I decided to get a stiffer ski. You could always try driving yourself crazy adjusting your bindings/fin.

This was my near death experience.

Great pics sar. We are only human with the good comes the bad. I used to be around people where I could demo their skis and I usually get a good feel for the ones I liked. Not many slalom skiers around me anymore. Either people have given up the sport or the younger people are on the wakeboards. If I was really motivated in changing skis, I would be demoing (is that a word?) skis from the local ski shop.

I will ski in a blizzard if the water is not hard. Actually I have photos of me skiing in a snowstorm the Ice broke 24 hours prior and the boat went in while there was still ice in the water. Brrrrrrrrr. Love to ski though and who needs a wet suit Just dont fall LOL

my motto is if the water is soft, you can go.

last thanksgiving, the air was 22 and the water was 40ish. previously posted pics of the ice dripping off the wakeboard.

we are much happier now we have the LSV with the heater!

heading out this pm for a quick ride, water will be about 50 and air is 62 now. still cruising to get up to 10 hrs. at least we are on the water!

2 weeks ago at the McGinnis ski school in Ft. Lauderdale. A great time was had.

Third set through the course.. new PB: 15' off at 32mph.

Need to keep the front of the ski down through the wakes and be earlier.

Laz,
Is Ann still running the school? I had a chance to ski with them several years back. A very interesting site and a very good experience. You don't want to fall on the button hook on the far end of the course...

I don't get many stills of me skiing. But here is one that Gordon Rathbun took while I was in Ski Paradise. This was while I was still stuggling with the warm brackish water (89 degrees) and the fact that it was second day out and first day had not gone well at all..

Sorry this is so huge but have not had time to make a small version of it.

Right click and then select Show Image (or View Image), you get a more manageable image.
