Looking at an upgrade!

Hey all, it's been a long time since I've contributed steadily to the forum. My family has just been enjoying our 07 LSV and surfing as much as possible. However, we think it may be time for an upgrade. I'm curious on your thoughts and opinions as to what the best all around newer Moomba's are. Looking at anything from 2019 to new, but will probably opt for a used boat. I don't know anything about the newer hulls, their ballast set ups, and Flow etc. I'm not looking for something where I have to stack a bunch of bags somewhere to get the "best" wave, I just want a turnkey, push-button, good wave that I can switch on the fly from regular to goofy and/or modify height/length. Let me know what you like and don't like and thanks in advance!

Lots of options in that range. What boat length are you considering? There are good deals on left over 23's out there. Sounds like the 23 Craz is turn key and doesn't need extra ballast. We had 600lbs of lead from our previous boat and we were happy with that in our 23 Mojo when we run a pitch of 9.5 of higher and autowake works well to achieve that.

having come from a similar hull in my launch20, any of todays new boats will have a 100% better wave with no bags laying everywhere. I loved the supra but hated the 400lb fatsacs all over the boat to get a wave.

as cucv mentions, narrow down size and that will tell you which boat to get.

one word of caution tho..... any new boat today regardless of builder is going to be a HUGE step up from your lsv but almost all but the premium priced units will benefit even greater from 500-1000lbs of lead spread around. you want a good wave, go as-is. you want a great wave, add lead.

Looking at either 23 or 24 foot, so Mojo or Makai? On your Mojo are you able to switch sides on the fly and have a surfable wave both sides? I kind of abhor the idea of hauling around lead. I would prefer to add larger bags or additional under floor bags to achieve the wave so I can ditch all the weight.

I guess I need to throw in the Tykon as well. Although they were new for 2023 as far as I can tell so finding a used one may be a bit more challenging. I want to be $100k or less ideally.

On all of Moomba's newer boats you can just flip a switch to surf from left to right. I had your exact boat, 07 LSV, until we got our 2021 Craz. We were doing more and more surfing so it made sense to get a boat that was set up for surfing. We still love to ski so the Craz was the best boat for skiing and surfing and we absolutely love it. We added larger bags for a better wave and also bought 500lbs of lead but like you I don't love to bring it unless there are only a few of us in the boat.

Not to derail the conversation, but the only boat I’ve been on that had a clean wave on either side with the flip of a switch is a Malibu. But they also have their trade offs. Most moomba and supras I’ve been on still like a little bit of list on the surf side for max wave performance. On my last supra it would be clean enough to transfer, but the opposite side would be pretty washed out until some weight was transferred to that side and the ballast system caught up with different settings. Maybe that’s improved in the latest models. Definitely a great wave on either side, just took a few minutes to transfer some water around and move a lead bag or 2.

The Malibu/axis wave is really good out of the box, but the wake gate surf system doesn’t offer the ability to tailor the wave to the extent that surf tab boats can. Malibus also suffer from excessive bow rise and are among the thirstiest of all surf boats at the fuel pump.

Completely agree, just pointing out that any boat/surf system other than surf gate is going to take some adjustments to have a clean wave from side to side. Malibu definitely has its trade offs though. Drives like a tractor when surfing, rides really bow high, qc isn’t great. And complete agree on limited ability to tailor the wave. But I will say the 2016ish 22 vlx was a sweet boat, probably my all time favorite wakeboard wave and pretty good surf wave for that size boat. But had lots of bugs with electronics and surf gates liked to get stuck engaged. I’d still get a Supra/moomba unless I had g money to spend.

My $.02 on the side to side transition….

Are there really that many riders that want to switch surf sides during their session? That could certainly be the case, I just have not experienced it, I have plenty of people that ride regular and/or goofy but have yet to have anyone request switching sides while behind the boat….

Now, if they do, I would have to adjust the settings in addition to just flipping the switch for sure, but if they are good enough to transition to the other side they are good enough to deal with it for the 10-15 seconds it would likely take to clean up…..

Thanks for all the inputs here! I found a new Tykon but will miss the factory rebate offer for end of May on it so it's probably out of budget. Same dealership has a loaded 2022 Mojo with the Flow 3 and 450. I put a hold on it today for a water test in about a week!

Nice…. From what I see there are deals to be had, bring out your negotiations skills for sure, but also, and I have been very fortunate in this case, make sure you like your dealer…

Did you look at the Max at all? The wakes and waves I have seen on the Max look great. The Mojo will have a bit nicer interior and options than the Max
