Hey all,
I'm looking for some surfboard advice... I'm wanting to get a board for the bigger guys I ride with sometimes and to have something I can double up with my kids on. I am thinking a longboard style. Guests are generally around... 200 - 225ish pounds. Mostly beginners although I'm wanting something to progress with as well. I was looking at the following boards which are on sale on Wakemakers...

Lib tech manatee $510 normally $850
https://www.wakemakers.com/collections/on-sale-wakesurf-boards/products/lib-tech-manna-tee-wakesurf-board

Slingshot mothership $582 normally $693
https://www.wakemakers.com/collections/on-sale-wakesurf-boards/products/slingshot-mothership-wakesurf-board

Ronix koal $490 normally $700
https://www.wakemakers.com/collections/on-sale-wakesurf-boards/products/ronix-koal-longboard-wakesurf-board-2022

I am also wanting to get a different board for myself. I am 5'6 and 160#. I currently have... I think a Doomswell Hydro, 4'8". All my stuff in the garage is covered right now because I'm painting. I can confirm in the next couple days. I'm open to options but definitely want to get something I'll like and have for a while. I'm wanting a surf style board.

My boat is a 2020 Moomba Max with upgraded 1260# rear bags. Factory center and midship bags. Then I'm adding the custom front bag from Wakemakers, 860#. Plus 150# in lead. Just over 5500# total.

Thanks in advance for any help/input.

On the big guy board, the HL Landlock is a good one. Its been around for a while and wont break the bank. I paid 300 for mine a couple of years ago.

Here is a short video of my middle son taking one of my friends little boys for a double ride. Also a pic of my sons friend taking my friends daughter and son for a triple on the Landlock.

Can you send the link for that West Marine board? I tried to search for it but couldn't find it. At that price I'm definitely doing that...

Disregard I was able to find it after doing a little more digging. It's not available anymore. It shows up but can't be added to a cart.

Best price I'm seeing for and available Landlock is right at $400. Just wondering if it would be worth the extra $100 to get the on sale Libtech...

Did you try evo.com? Type in 2022 Hyperlite Landlock. It came up at 379 and free shipping. I believe it is a clearance item

Second on the landlock. Purchased it for beginners and bigger guests but also love to ride it with my nephews on it with me! Super fun board for this type of stuff

Sent from my SM-G781V using TapatalkEvo is showing a mid May ship date. But I did find it at $379 there. I do like the multiple fin options on the Libtech. Might just need to do a little more research. Sucks that West Marine deal wasn't still good. I would've have definitely jumped on that. Even if I had to wait a couple weeks.

I have a liquid force rocket for big riders. Since I dont have a bunch of fat friends it gets little use and does well. The boat I purchased came with a second one that I would let go of for a deal.

For yourself, try some Phase 5 surf style boards. Hard to find onsale now, new ones are very pricey, but every now-and-then a used one is up for sale.
Phantom, Ahi, or the Model-X. At your size a 53" would ride nice. They are sturdy and fast.

You should feel good I didnt lump you in the fat friends catagory! Nothing better than telling a joke so funny HR wants to hear it too!

I second the phase 5 comment, rode both of MJH's phase 5 boards and they were both awesome!
I bought a hyperlite transistor last year for myself and I love it. Fast and loose, and a ton of fun to spin.

Phase 5 Ahi $850 (seems pricey for a used board to me, but I'm still trying to figure things out)

Phase 5 Doctor $700

Doomswell Neo $500

Soulcraft voodoo $650

There's so many things to choose from and it's hard to know what to do simply because you can't really test them out. I'm willing to spend $$$ on a really nice board but just want to make sure it is going to be something I like. Or at least do my best to know.

I hear ya on the options! That’s how we ended with like 8 boards and only use 2-3!

We love our soulcrafts. Best board we’ve ridden. If you consider theirs give them a call or email they’ll guide you on what board would be best based on your height weight and skill level.

Amazing quality and CS as well.

My simple opinion on a big man board, or easy rider board for people that are not going to "shred", but just want to be able to get up, is not to spend big bucks on it. It will tend to be a board that doesn't get used a whole lot once people learn to surf.

I have that same size Soulcraft VooDoo - 4'-8", but I'm 6-0 and 225#. You will need a smaller one - 4'-6". It's light, fast, and fun to ride. Favorite board I have. Much more board than the skill I have to ride it. They are fragile and need to be kept out of the sun - more than other boards. I found a used one b/c the new ones are pricey. Ridden some other SC models too, none of them have sucked.

Otherwise I would look for a used P5 Phantom, Ahi, or the Model-X. Own a Phantom and ridden all of them. All fast and fun and easily recover from far back in the wave. Model-X is the easiest to try to spin around.

Owned a Doomswell Nubstep and rode the Neo. I liked the Nubstep over the Neo, but liked the Soulcraft and P5 better. Felt faster. I would still ride the Nubstep if I had it. They are like the SC boards and are very fragile, but you can try different fins on them.

I found a Liquid Force Space Pod on a close out sale. 4'-8" around $450-500 new. I rode it a few times but mostly have it for other new riders on the boat. It's a good board, appears to be less buoyant, probably a little narrower than some other boards . Not a $1K board as the ad says, but a well built board.

For the big-guy board and other riders, I would not find anything fancy. As mentioned above. Most of them are going to get up and stand on it, which is fine. But the higher-end boards really come alive with some fins and riding the board on the rails. I have a friend with P5 surfboard and he is closer to 275#. It's a fast board and he likes it, but since he is just standing the pocket most of the time, he could get the same ride and not of spent >$800.

MJHSupra or anyone else...
Would you recommend the Phantom or the Ahi? I found both on sale at marine-products.com. Phantom for $765, Ahi for $680. Since I'm spending that much. If the Phantom is better I'd rather spend the extra $100. They also have a 21' Model X for $580. Thoughts?

That price on the Phantom $765 is a 50". The Ahi $680 and Model X $580 are both 53".

I’m 6’4” 250lbs. Landlock has been great to me. We got it when it was still $300 so it was a no brainer. I would still buy it if it was < $400. It’s great for beginners of any size.

So I called Marine-Products.com and spoke to Rich. I mention that because his customer service was beyond great. If you ever need any input he'd be a great resource. They are based out of Salt Lake City, UT. Anyway, I ended up ordering the Hyperlite Landlock for bigger riders. He said it's easier to get up on than the Libtech Manatee because it has more weight and is easier to push down, which is the point. He then sent me the Phantom, $699 (2022 model) and Ahi, $619 (2021 model). He only had one of each left. He said try them out for a couple weeks and send whichever one I don't want back to them at no additional cost. So now, I can try them both and get it all figured out. I appreciate everyone's help. Can't wait to get these boards and my front ballast bag installed and be back out on the water.

Nothing too exciting...I got the Hyperlite Landlock. We usually have a friend or two with us that are bigger guys, 250lbs. They struggle on the boards we currently have so i figured i might as well get something that works better for them.

Yeah the Landlock was recommended to me because it's a bit heavier and easier for a beginner to push down. I was told all the other longboard style boards are super buoyant and can be difficult for a beginner to get up on. Hopefully it helps both of our guests.

For anyone in the Austin area, this guy is selling this "big guy" board. It's a 2018 Koal Classic Longboard, 5'4". He'll come down to $200 on it. Which seems like a great deal. I passed because my Landlock already shipped and Rich at Marine Products said the Landlock would work better... For the above reasons...
