With winter here we decided to pull our son out of school for a few days and head to the mountains to take the kids skiing for the first time. Destination was Red River, NM due to their abundance of beginner terrain and shorter drive.

Put Nolan’s (7) and Hailey (3) in ski school the first day and they did pretty good. Hailey had school in the afternoon so I worked with her all morning and by the time she got to the school she about had the basics down.

Neither kid wanted to take a lift up to bigger hill so they stayed on the conveyor lift at the bunny hill which made my wife happy as she is not a big skier and was nervous taking the kids.

We also rode snowmobiles for the first time and that was a blast.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230224/347ff6db6aa1420782f833fa37a9748a.jpg

I spent the first two days chasing Hailey down the bunny hill holding onto her leashes and then hiking back up next to her in the conveyor to help her get off at the top. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230224/33862179fd87a9d802a7b8894f15d496.jpg

That is awesome! You kids are at a fun age for that too! It's also amazing at how fast the small kids will pick up how to ski, and with NO poles. I think it's because when they fall, they are so close to the ground it doesn't really hurt them. Unlike me who feels like I just fell out of a tree! Encourage them to go up a little higher to a long slow green trail. They will love it!

Family shot with my mom. We brought her with us as she doesn’t get the opportunity to go on many trips with us. I think everyone had a ton of fun. Biggest issue was the trip was too short! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230224/d0f4b4e86fae342c64c1e2dac81c56e9.jpg

Man I tried! My son kept saying next time we go he will get on a lift and go up. My wife is not the strongest skier and she is afraid of heights and was worrying her self about the kids on ski lifts the entire month before the trip so I know she was relieved and she probably put some of the fear into the little ones. I wish we had one more day to really cement the concept of it into their heads. We wont be back for two years (the deal I worked out with my wife; alternate guys ski trip and family ski trip every other year) so I hope we don't completely start over again.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkOk! You gotta do another family shot with no helmets! LOL! Maybe not post for the world to see if you don't want, but at least for your personal. We did all that too and later always have to tell everyone who is who that don't know us really well.

Just spent the weekend at Mt Hood for my son's 20th birthday. Although we had a big group, I was able to take a few runs with just my son and my 21 yr old daughter. They are both snowboarders and although I can ride I'm way better on skis. Can I just saw how GREAT it was to be cruising down the mountain with my babies. Watching them progress to where they are now has been pretty awesome.

It's expensive as hell, but keep it up David! Good job dad.

Yeah I would love to take them every year but my wife is NOT a skier lol. She skis, but she doesn't enjoy and says she only does it because I want to go so we worked out a deal where we go every other year as a family and the years we don't go together I get to go with some friends. I just feel their progression is going to be really slow only going every other year. Maybe next time I will get my wife some private lessons and she will enjoy it more with the added confidence. Hard part with the kids is you can really only go on Christmas break or spring break without missing a ton of school and she already take them out for a week in the spring to go to Destin and I am not always off for Christmas break or spring break.

We did have one small scare. Our friends Kimi and Jeremy came with us and their daughters were skiing with Jeremy and I. Their youngest is 7 and she likes to go fast and this is only their second time skiing. We had gone down a couple black groomers earlier in the day so she was feeling pretty confident in her ability which led to her bombing down Kit Carson (a blue) so fast that she was unable to make the turn at the bottom. Luckily her feet caught a small tree before she got to the steep drop off. Here is the video. Please excuse the quality, I had grabbed the wrong filter for the go pro and didn't realize it until I watched the footage later. It's all a little over exposed.

Wow! Glad she didn't get hurt. In a way maybe it will turn into a good good learning lesson for her to know just how quickly things can go wrong. Hope it doesn't scare her from being adventurous though. You guys did a good job of handling it calmly.

She was a trooper, went back up and down the mountain 3 more times that day after this. I almost lost my snow board. There was a guy standing close by and when she went off the trail he took off after her. I tried to stick my board in the snow but did a poor job because I was moving so fast and it fell over and started going down the hill. Once the random guy saw I was going to make it to her first and that I knew her he then took off and rescued my board. Nice to know there are still good people out there!

Our little girl is in her third season on skis, she's 5. We take her about 10 times a year. She has progressed nicely from all the greens to mild blues. She will be better than my wife in another year or 2. MJH, you would be impressed with P. We will have to find time to get some laps in.

That's awesome! I wish we were able to go that off. We need one of those indoor hills in Houston like they have in New Jersey. I'd take the kids once a month or so if we had that.

She is a trooper! That was the thing that scared me most about skiing with our kids at the start. I didn't want them to get hurt in a way that they would decide to never ski again, but I also didn't want to impede their progress. I worked to make sure they had good fundamentals and that they were in control and then let them pick the way. After a spill like that I would review with them what went wrong and we would figure out if it was something they needed help correcting or if it was just something they had to experience to allow them to improve. We go just about every weekend and every one of them is now an excellent skier and rarely do we have concerns.

The only other suggestion I might have would be to work with her on the turns. Take a run and go down a long hill top to bottom and call out turns to her and make sure she is keeping her legs together and turning parallel with her speed in check. I have helped teach a lot of extended family and neighbors and I have had to correct issues for many others where they sit in the snowplow stance for way too long, which will impede progress. She is starting out extremely strongly though! Great job!
