View Full Version : Mirror - stock one is blech

Not sure which sub forum is best, but after the first 50 hours with the stock mirror it would already be at the bottom of a lake if I didn’t need it… what’s the general consensus, I do love the PTM pro, have actually been able to get hands on with one at a Tige dealer (sadly it was on a new boat and not for sale)…. What else is out there that provides a solid mount with ease of adjustability, as I cant get over the difficulty on the stock one….

I just bought an extension for it so I can see under it a little better. Any photos?

Here is the stock one…. The adjustable and knobs are cumbersome, and almost no gap visible between the windshield frame and bottom of the mirror making visibility challenging….

The CIPA isn't bad. The PTM is better (my opinion).
I have found it is better to install the mirror on the port side window and angle it toward the driver seat.
Gives me visibility across the whole back and doesn't block my forward view.

Thanks, I may certainly have to try that in the interim, but I feel like the rough feeling mount and adjustability are probably relegating this one to back up duty once I can get something else shipped to Canada lol

The PTM’s are nice with the quick release feature.

I agree. I have the ptm edge 140 installed on port windshield. Absolutely love it. Can see everything in the rear, with no forward visibility issues.

I had that same Cipa mirror too and installed it on the port side as well because it blocked my view. I now have the PTM installed just off to my right side in front of me now and like it ok there, but am about to add the extension so I can see under it even better. Will take some pictures this weekend with it on there.

I have had the Cipa 180 with tall mount on my last 2 boats, it is a great mirror for the money. PTM is top of the line, but it isn't $200 or more better.

I moved the Cipa over to the port side yesterday, and of course it improved forward visibility, but was unable to position it for the correct rear view while having the center window open, as it would be resting the window frame on the mount…. Lol, I know a portion of this is reflective of my stature, and stock seat height, the latter I can alleviate, I think at this age I am stuck with the former!

I have not seen the extended mount for the CIPA. If I had, that might have kept me with that mirror. What's it look like?

Flip your mount.
Unscrew the windshield mount and remove the riser. Flip it so the side with the screw handle is under the windshield. Re-insert the riser and tighten.
Now your window will sit flush and you can work on adjustments to make it work in the interim. It might not clear vertical though. Just trying to help.

Get the ptm 140 and don’t look back!
(Well figuratively speaking) but you get it lol

Yeah, it is a cupped mount. Had it on my Mojo and took it with me to the Supra, sold the little short PTM mount a mirror before even taking the boat out the first time. I can see under the mirror completely and not a single person has ever complained of restricting view.

Most likely, but the Cipa 180 is about a third as much as the biggest PTM mirror, and I got both on sale back in the day for under $100!

It will for sure. That’s the mount on my Supra. It came without a mirror.
I put the ptm on it. Works like a charm. Well worth it!
The $180 I spent on the 140 is priceless.
I could have gotten a CIPA free, and if there’s one thing you guys should know about me, I’m a thrifty bastard [emoji1787].
Extremely worth it.

Your Supra came with the Cipa mount? Mine came with the similar looking PTM mount and little PTM mirror from the factory but was only about half as tall. The 140 is nice, but I can't really tell a big difference to the 180. At the end, gotta be happy with what you have and use, that is all that matters.

Idk. I’m very certain I have the mount you linked. Whether it came factory or not, idk. I didn’t buy new.

Tried flipping it a few ways, and moving it back and forth, honestly made myself more frustrated with it, lol….
If I could have amazon droned in a new one to me on th lake at any cost yesterday I would have, today, my ‘frugal’ brain took over, and maybe ill find one on an off season sale…. The move to port surely helped

I had that exact mirror mounted on my Makai like you have shown in that picture, only I had it slid over closer to the middle to where it just barely touched the flipped over window when open. By the way my boat colors are almost exactly what you have. That picture could easily be one I took. Except for the fact we don't have any mountains! LOL!

Nice!
The further I slide it to the middle, the lack of adjustability on the mirror itself comes into play and I lose any view of the rear….
The mountains up here are nice for sure, if you can get used to the water being a little cooler!
This is up on Arrow Lake, and its been glass lately!

And its pretty quiet, I’m the only one out making wakes usually!

I’m telling you bro. $180 on wakemakers solves the problem. Can’t explain the value a good mirror is worth.

No. But the ball/cup is the same.
Let’s say, even if, $260 solves the problem for the mirror/mount combo. $260, on a $100k boat lol.
I’m probably the most frugal bastard on this forum, I get it. It took me 4 boats to squeeze a nickel out of my ass for a mirror.
The value they add, imo is priceless. It makes your job as captain so much easier, safer. I could list many reasons to buy once cry once. We do it for way less important things on these boats.

I am thrifty as well, that's why I spent less that $100 on the Cipa 180 and taller mount and sold the factory PTM gear for $150, lol. The Cipa 180 is huge, every bit as big as the PTM 140. I am all about safety and rider first when pulling, my setup works great for me, glad yours works great for you.

Was just looking at current prices of these mirrors and mounts for the various brands, wow!! A lot more than I would have ever guessed for some metal or plastic and a piece of glass.
This thread is blowing my mind. Never thought about putting mirror on port side. I’ve just lived w the cipa in the way for 18 years. Can’t wait to try the mirror on the port side this weekend! Can’t believe I never thought about that before.

Wakemakers has the PTM 140 with base mount for $299, not bad, it's just the short mount. Their larger mounts are $200 or more alone.

Took a few pictures of my PTM Edge. I just put the extension on it this weekend. I like it. I am a bit on the tall side, with the adjustable seat extension, and this raised it so I can see underneath a whole lot easier. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220904/0d110958ec0e49ad2f2d8d6ad4ba03a7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220904/ee3363b388a97a8a76e11521a5b44ae1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220904/e04015eb7d36e2229fb05c5e3306b6e1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220904/89bc7032573f43c45735856561ae68bc.jpg

Funny you say that, because I did have it to the side, and moved it back to this position when I got the extension just to see if I liked it. Not sure at this point yet, but having it higher where I can easily see under it makes it not too bad. I used it here this weekend, and am going to move it to the side later after giving it a good use like it is. Then see which I think I like better. I will say one advantage I notice about it being centered on me (the steering wheel) is that the rear view way back behind the boat is more even on both sides. That does tend to make it easier to spot other boats or jetskis that slip up behind me off to the side.

I agree on the even on the both sides. I need to sit behind that view and drive to really tell. Plus a little depends on how high/low the seats sits when driving riders. Betting I would get used to it.

When my wife drives she has the mirror on the curved part of the port windshield. She says the gives her the best view of the starboard side where I ride. Looks rediculous but if it works for her Im not gonna complain.

I bit the bullet and pick up a Roswell mirror, a non current one my dealer had in stock (the reflect), much taller bracket and the ability to rotate down out of the way for the cover was a good feature….. of course no review yet, but soon….
Pulled it out of the box and love the finish on the hardware for sure, and it has a nice tall arm as well!!!
Will let everyone know…. And it was significantly less than what the current model is selling for on their site if anyone has interest as well !
