View Full Version : Throttle/Speed Surging - 2022 Kaiyen - GPS Issue?

Anyone have this issue?

Here's what's happening. I get everything set to surf. Ballast full, ZeroOff set, etc. Hit the throttle and once up to speed, the engine starts reving up and down, and speed on the dash screen starts cycling up and down by about 1mph.

Here's where it gets interesting. If I back the throttle off the engine stops surging but the speed in the dash keeps cycling up and down even though my speed is consistent.

Only thing I found to fix it is to turn off the engine and cycle the battery.

Bad GPS unit? I'm super confused.

The common theme as of late with the electronics of newer boats is to check for a loose ground. Trace the receiver wire to the ground buss bar it’s tied into and check the connection. Check the grounds on your batteries and any other ground distribution busses.

If it’s not that, then I would say a new GPS receiver is in your future.

Yes, 2in is right about grounds making anything electronic act funky. My sons 2016 Dodge Dart all of a sudden started having intermittent flashing of his digital speedo, and his radio/ac/everything control display panel, would go blank. Ended up being that the ground terminal on the battery was slightly loose. And I mean slightly! Apparently electronics these days are very ground sensitive.

^^^ This.

Loose grounds will mess with everything.

Checked bus bar and battery terminals. All solid.

Checked bus bar and battery terminals. All solid.Bummer! Was hoping you would find an easy fix to it.

Only thoughts at this point are to check the connections between the puck and ECM. Otherwise, sounds like a warrantee issue.

Me too!

Worked fine today though. So that's good.

Maybe checking all the connections actually moved something that was loose back into contact. [emoji1696]

Maybe... But it's been doing it since day two so will have to see. It's intermittent. If it happens again, I'll record it so I have some proof. Otherwise could be one of those 'we can't get it to replicate' things.

Love the boat otherwise!

Here's some video.

Notice the speed bouncing up and down and zerooff is trying to chase it. This causes the throttle to surge up and down.

This video is at a stand still on a calm day. See the speed gauge oscillating.

Finally here is one with zerooff disabled and steady rpm. Speed gauge oscillating despite a steady speed.

What do you all think? GPS? Software?
