View Full Version : Random Engine die or stall out

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this same situation. Went to Flaming Gorge the last 4 days. First day.....Cruze up canyon about 20 minutes at around 25 or so. Rans smooth as can be. Set up for surf session and filled everything up. Decided to test the wave before we started. We were cruising along for a few minutes and then all of a sudden the engine dies. We all looked at eachother like WTH was that. Figured it was a fluke, so our rider hopped in and we started to surf. Worked fine on her first pull and then she fell. Second pull as we got her up, died. Now I was concerned. Pulled her one more time, pulled her up slow and didn't just floor down the cruise control and she surfed for a few minutes and died.

We all decided something was up and we needed to go back to the marina, tie up and start hitting google up. Drained and went back with no problems. After about a hr, and no ideas from google, we decided maybe it was the cruise control. We all went back on the lake, and filled up. I decided I would try it one more time with no surfer with cruise control before I started testing new options. No problems. Surfed first person....no problem.....second person no problem. It was like nothing happened at all. Surfed 3 more straight days maybe 6 hrs each day, no problems. Boat ran great for the whole trip.

Just got back last night and thought I would see what peoples thoughts were. I have some thoughts about gas, partical caught in gas intake, computer cruise glitch. It was not overheating. Fluids were all good. Maybe fuel filter. I don't know.

Any thoughts?

I will just listen:)

Thanks all....much appreciated.

I am guessing no codes popped up on the screen? It does sound like it could be gas related. Change out your fuel filter/water dryer to be safe. Did it start right back up with no problems each time?

Fuel related 100%.
Water would be my first guess. Add a fuel treatment to the tank to help with water and fill up with fresh gas from a high volume station.

Did you accidently bump your kill switch with your right leg?

I recall this being common/possible on the moombas.

Also a good idea to exercise your killswitch contacts.

Was going to say it sounds like maybe you tapped your kill switch with your knee or something. It is very easy to do and it’s so sensitive that even the slightest touch will activate the kill switch. Remember it is two method switch both with the push button and also with the lanyard clip.

When I first got my Max I killed it like 3 or 4 times my first few outings before I realized what I was doing and hitting the kill switch by accident. I made mental note and changed my sitting position slightly to keep my right knee away from it.

This. Happend to me several times on the old boat. I actually had a hat hanging from the throttle and it would bump the kill switch when i would turn left and the seat would move over just enough to push the hat up against the kill switch. It was maddening trying to figure it out!

Yep my exact thinking on this one as well.

Does sound more like kill switch than fuel to me. Water in fuel usually shows up every time you put the engine under a load. I had a problem with the fuel pressure relay on my boat which presented similar to this but it doesn’t translate as I have a indmar assault 310 carb.

Not exactly the same but similar except when mine died I lost all electrical power, dead in the water. Turned out to be a relay not plugged all the way in somewhere near the engine

Good thought. I did run it all and am filling it up full tomm. Didn't run it dry, but till last bar was gone. I use Eth free 100% of the time. Do you think I should add treatment before I fill tomm?

Maybe my seat hit it. I tend to stand and drive as I feel more comfortable seeing around the boat etc. I turn the seat in for more space for me to stand. I am going to look at this position and see if it could have been that. 996 and Hak thanks

I would still throw a treatment in the tank that has a water emulsifier in it. It will help get any moisture out if this is your problem. A high volume station is least likely to have debris or moisture in the underground storage.

A loose fuel pump relay could be a thing also.

Ahhhhhh...this could be the culprit! I did have a bahama moma hat hanging from it at first. I think I took it off after that, and never hung it back on for the trip. It sat on the dash board. This is why I like this fricken forum! Everyone or someone out there has run into the same issue at some point in time. I thikn that might be it.!!! I am going to check it out tomm. Thanks

At least fuel prices are slowly dropping

At least fuel prices are slowly dropping

Down 64 cents here since the peak. Only $1.30 more to go until normal.

After $5 gas, I will not be fooled by $4 being acceptable when $3 is the benchmark.

We are almost to $4 flat in Ohio. I just wish diesel would come down at the same rate....:(

I have been using apps my neighbor has to get extra pennies off the price. Filling 40 gallon boat and a 40 gallon diesel hurts. Any extra $0.03 or whatever makes me feel slightly better...I guess

Still above $5 here in Utah..They said on the news we are the 5th highest in the nation!!!! UGH. It was $7.50 on the water at Lake Powell last week. YIKES

Truck and Boat total yesterday $509.20

For anyones info.....2019 Max we ran it till the last full bar was gone. Not flashing, but gone. Had no choice as I would not normally do that. Filled it full yesterday and it filled 61 gallons. I believe,,,and its been awhile, but it a 65 gallon tank. That mean after the last bar dissapears, there is about 5 gallons left. Not sure how that would translate into distance or timeing, but I thought it would be intertesting for others to know if they are out on the lake and saw the last bar dissapear like I did.

Rockymtn, you should hang that hat back up at somepoint when you go back out to see if that was the culprit. Just for some satisfaction![emoji16]

I only had it die once, but we do get an issue often when restarting the engine between surfing sets After a restart, and engaging the throttle it takes off, then just loses power. I don't know iff it's a gps thing or something else entirely. But it is highly annoying.

On a had note, made the mistake of filling say a $100 limit station yesterday, that was annoying after the 4th card swipe.

Do you let everything cycle before starting? Cruise just taking over after you get to setpoint? Or are you talking stall out?

I let it cycle and it did it to me. When my wife drives, I'm not sure.

HF....Good point. I will do that, but you know how it is....can I really do the same secniro when I really don't know how I was standing or how chair was. But I did't press it yesterday and it is sensitve and it shut down immediately. Might mess with it today. I always cycle for the second noise, it justa normal habit. It also start right up. Not even a second guess. knock on fricken wood! Yesterday it ran great for a quick 3hr session. Knock on wood!! I guess we will see today and tomm. Next week I am going to change the fuel filter and maybe thermo just to put in new ones. Peace of mind and good maintenece. Don't want to die the richest in the grave yard:)

BTW Wild.....I don't let wife drive if I don't have to:)...my daughter drives me all the time. Shes great at pick ups and we never have to stop...constant flow. She also is great at tweeking the wave when needed.....for 17yrs, I trust her more than anyone.

Wow!! A surf boat driving 17 year old girl!? You better take your bat with you on the boat to keep the teenage boys beat away! She is going to be a keeper! LOL!
