View Full Version : Slow Start 2022

This my thread to vent and whine about an excruciatingly slow start to 2022.

Been on the water once this year so far.

Yep you read that right, one trip for one day.

April/May all my weekends were booked, when I got home from work in mid June my first week was helping grandparents move across the state, then I got one day in.

Had big plans for the 4th and Saturday morning the whole family woke up with covid. So that wasted last weekend and this upcoming weekend we are going to an out of town water park. Hoping to get on the water Thursday just to cruise around and swim but my son is still fighting a covid fever so we will see. A week from today it’s back to work and I won’t be home until mid August. So by mid August at most I will have made it out twice! In Texas!!!

Anyone else out to an drastically slower start to the year than normal?

I feel for you, but sometimes things find a way of working out. As long as you are enjoying time with your family, you are still doing good!

I get it completely.

Rain rain and more rain made the lakes in Ohio high and cold much longer than normal. Memorial day (not weekend) water was 72 but we roughed it.

Then 1 other time because of weather, 4H for the kids, yard work, family gatherings, etc.

Made it out twice this weekend July 3rd and 4th but that is 4 times. Last year it was twice a week from Memorial day until Norris before we calmed down.

Just remember have fun and enjoy....I have found forcing the issue causes problems or problems find me.

Don’t feel bad. It’s been a slow start for us as well.

Once with a buddy.
Once demoing a new SA.
Once with wife and daughter.

We don’t do holidays on the water so that hasn’t helped either. Hoping to go this weekend if the weather forecast will clear up.

We have also had an excruciatingly slow start. May had a lot of cold/wet weekends. June we had a lot of weekend commitments and then we wound up with Covid. We took out the boat for the first time Saturday. The lake we generally like to visit locally (because it is closest and big) has been very low, with ramps closed last year in early July. People were launching "at your risk" for the past couple of months, but my appetite for risk is lower than others, which prevented us from making the half day visits that were usually our staple. On Saturday we went to our second choice lake but got out late and when we got there we were told all the marinas were at capacity and no more boats were allowed, so we took on our third choice, meaning we drove 2 hours before we could launch the boat. We were headed to make the risky launch at my preferred lake, but a call to neighbors who had launched there prevented us from going when they told us two other neighbors had "knocked the fins off the bottom of their boats."

We really need more water...

Fortunately, Lake Powell is in two weeks and I will have a week of uninterrupted boating!

The last year I had the boat I spent more time winterizing the boat than I had hours accumulated on the engine. Sad. Events can really change the useage.

I can so relate to your pain. I only got the boat in the water one time all of last year. Very similar issues for me. This year I’ve tried hard to build in boat time and have been fairly successful. My advice is don’t let it get you down too much and take advantage of the opportunities when you can get them. I have so been where you are brother. Hang in there.

My wife conned me into moving to Tx saying we would be on the boat more. So far, we’ve been out three times. April, weather sucked as did my wife’s schedule.

I got the boat out for its maiden voyage in late May, and we’ve had it out twice in June. We avoid holiday weekends.

Where we used to live, by this time we’d of been camping 3 times with the boat, and had at least 4 half day trips. July and August would be a minimum of 2 half day trips a week any week we weren’t camping which was typically every other week. My wife would take the summers off, and I planned my shifts for weekends and took Mon-thurs off from June until Sept.

So, I feel your pain. We thought we were avoiding the draught out west with our move, but we just traded one for another, with ramp closures, etc. We hope to get out more, but it’s getting a little more difficult to launch as days go by without rain.

Well folks...5+ inches of rain and counting over a 24hr period in Ohio.
Docks will be closed this weekend at my 2 local spots.

If I could send it out west, I would.

David I would say if we weren't going into a recession maybe its time for a different job or career?

job has traditionally allowed for a lot of boat time until my son started school. not during the school year we are limited to only weekends and I only get half the summer off and it was full of unusual circumstances. We will get some time in in august and we have a house boat for labor day

We officially may it out last Friday for day two. Just the wife and the kids. Didn't do any riding as we really need an extra adult to help control children while one of us drives but it was nice to get out on the water and cruise. We went to the beach by the dam and swam for a couple hours and let the kids played. Wasn't the best day on the water but it sure felt good to get some sun shine and wind in my hair.

The lousy boating summer just gets worse... Houseboat was pulled from the lake 6 weeks ago to fix a leak in the gimbal seal. We were promised it would be looked at that week and should be back on the water a week later. Two weeks later, they finally looked at it and told us what it would need to get fixed, which was many more parts. Two weeks after that, we were told the parts would take another week and the thruster also needed replacing and it was 3 weeks out, but the thruster could be replaced on the water. At the start of this week, we were told the boat would be done and launched on Friday ahead of our Saturday visit to Lake Powell. Today, they told us that the boat didn't launch because the outdrive was in worse shape than expected.

So much for my week of boating

We have found an Airbnb off the water at the other end of the lake though, so instead of 7 days, we will take 5. Unfortunately, I have to pay for it, plus we are out our annual maintenance on the houseboat and will also have to pay our share of what I was told today would likely be a $10,000 repair bill. Love my Moomba. Sometimes I really hate house boating.

Oh man that absolutely suck!!!! Sorry to hear but hopefully you can enjoy a few days on the lake. Hope they get the houseboat back in the water soon.

Dang, hate to hear these stories.

I had a good streak on the lakes after we got back from the beach on Memorial Day weekend. Was out every-other day until last weekend, then a business trip screwed me this week.

Not all boarding, got some fishing, paddling, and swimming in too.

A lot of if logs this year between storms.

Add insult to injury.
Best boating time was when my kids were having to be at the fair all week for 4H.
Now we have the rest of the summer free and it has rained every available lake day for 2 weeks straight. Wife scheduled time off in August. I WFH most days and can blow off an afternoon...so we shall see.

I think I'm at 8hrs for this season.....

You have the rain while we are being told to not water our yard due to drought and I am worried there won't be any water left for us by the time I get home haha. We shall see.

I washed my truck in attempt to summon the rain gods to no avail. Ramps are getting lower by the day. My lawn is dying. At least we fixed the leak in our pool and aren’t paying $500/mo water bills keeping it full.

If I could share it, I would ship it your way. It has been overly wet season compared to the past couple summers. Yard looks good, garden is crazy productive, but cannot get anything else done.

Also, not trying to rub it in. I know you guys are struggling.

drop in the bucket to what we need. was a crazy last 2 days with all the lightning shows and rain tho.
an inch each day wed and thurs doesn't sound like a lot but our back yard was a lake since the dry ground can't absorb it...

insurance companies/LEO's have been CRAZY busy the last 2 days with all the rain. the roads here turn into the same driving surface as ice in the midwest when it rains from the tar/tire residual/heat and people around here do not understand the concept of slowing down. heard a ton of sirens from our house all evening last night responding to wrecks.
