View Full Version : Gas cans

I have been using my gas cans more often this year.

My current 5G cans without vents were not cutting it and leaked more that I could tolerate and take forever to dump 5 gallons.

Looked at the VP race cans and stumbled across the rural king gas cans for half the price.

https://www.ruralking.com/5-gallon-polyethylene-fluid-container-red

Made in the USA, no leaks and hold 5.5 gallons. I tested with water and with vent fully open, no leaks.

Drains 5.5 gallons in about 75 sec.

Technically these can’t be sold as gas cans due to the venting and free flow nozzles, but honestly nobody will ever question a red gas can.

I wonder if these are the same height as the VP. I had some farm brand jug before and it was taller and eventually the cap on the breather cracked and broke off and I couldn't find a replacement.

All the rest of my jugs (6) are VP. And honestly I'll stay with them because they have the smaller opening on the lid (better if I ever wanted to use the turbo siphon), but more importantly they are the perfect height to fit under the hard tonneau cover of my f150.

I have 5 clear and 1 red that a buddy gave me. I like the clear because it's so much easier to see fuel level when filling. I live on the west coast and have even filled in Oregon where you can't typically pump your own. Never ever been sweat on having clear jugs. They are so common in power sports, it's all good. Filled up 2 last night to maximize my fuel points discount...

I have a rattle siphon and would use it if my boat was in water and gas can was on the dock. Obviously the can needs to be higher than the gas tank.

I am filling with cans with boat on trailer.

The rattlers are awesome for siphoning gas from vehicle/motor sports tanks.

Newer cars/trucks have the stupid check balls in them and you can no longer siphon them.

And you obviously can’t siphon the Supra/moomba tanks.

Or I guess I could fill an empty VP jug from a full one both ways... I have a couple I just filled last night and a couple empties...

Just for curiosity sake anyway. It's not gonna be more than 30 seconds over any of the solutions I'm sure.

So interesting story. Our friends have a lake house, and it's a $500 fine if they catch you fueling your boat while it's in the water.

Obviously idiots with no skill spilling fuel in the lake ruined it for everyone else.

Allegedly, the best method for a midnight stealth fuel is a couple of VP jugs with the hose on one or both the lids... (Easy to unscrew caps and swap hose to new jug that way). Fastest and still pretty quiet with no extra equipment to mess with in the dark. [emoji3]

It just doesn't make sense for me since I'm already all in on a bunch of VPs and the fact that VPs are literally the perfect height for my truck tonneau.

This something I didn’t measure before purchasing.

The RK cans fit under tonneau cover with the hose folded in half, I probably will just remove hose and put cap plug in for transport.

The only reason I shopped RK was my buddy bitched about his VP can vents leaking, but I think he is inverting his can vertical versus using a pouring motion, I am sure the VP’s are perfectly fine.

But for $22 with the hose is a pretty good deal

I've used VP cans for years as the places we went to didn't have marinas or gas stations or boaters. A full tank of gas and 6 cans in the boat. What gas didn't get used in the boat went into the motor home for the ride home. My predictive maintenance on the boat gave me an operational fuel pump for fueling. For my dirt bike, I used the benders to make it easier.

Use a hand crank pump from TSC with a built on fuel filter.

I have 2 rigs for this. One for gas toys one for diesel toys.

It's an expensive option but flo fast hand crank and containers are really nice. I have 5 x10.5 gal jugs and a flat folding dolly cart from Costco. Fits three jugs at a time. Push the cart up to my boat, fill, and repeat.

Northern tool with $20 off coupons is the cheapest place to get them. Occasionally will see them used on FB marketplace.

Typically fill at Costco on my way out of town and figure I pay for about a jug per weekend on the $savings vs filing at station near the lake.

That is the reason for the filter setup. I was worried for the same reasons but water hasn't been a concern so far. I put stabilizer in the gas and additive in the diesel. I truly only fill them twice a season. Living 20 minutes minimum to a fuel station I got tired of running out when using the tractor and SxS.

Right on. I do the same for stabilizer and additives.

If I get my dock built next year, I have the ability to drive right down to the water's edge. Not sure what system I would use to fuel the boat driving from the local gas station.

30 gallon Poly tank. I have two of them I use for this system. One is plain with no hoses. I put it in the back of the truck and fill it at the station. Then use a cheap, but fast siphon to gravity drain it into the tank on the dolly. Roll it onto my dock and then hook up a small air pump to the top of it as shown. With only about 1.5 psi of pressure it pumps the whole 30 gallons uphill into the boat in just over 3 minutes. My old crownlines fuel fill cap was at about dock height and I could just gravity feed the whole 30 gallons into the boat on it. Using this setup I never have to lift anything full of gas.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220707/0676cc97ac22d566d23b18a53ad0c3bb.jpg

By the way, most car washes have these tanks and will give them to you. They receive all their soaps and chemicals in them. They are HDPE and chemical resistant. 55 gallon too, but I prefer the 30 because it's easier to handle.

@HFarr I have seen your setup before on here or FB can't remember. Could you list the parts you used to put this together? Thanks!I just went online and found the parts I used to post some pictures. I know I only paid 30 bucks for the rubber gas line and handle, but that was about 4 years ago. I did buy 10' long hose, but ended up cutting it in half down to 5'. The plastic chemical resistant fittings I bought at tractor supply. I tried taking a picture down in the barrel where I mounted the bulkhead fitting. This particular barrel had a flat spot down there with a raised ridge inside it that happened to allow me to drill my hole so that one of the flat spots on the bulkhead fitting nut butted up against it. That held the nut in place allowing me to tighten it from just the outside. Threaded the elbow into that and then claimed the gas hose to it. Super simple. If you're fill cap on the boat sits lower than the barrel, gravity feed is all you need. Notice I did make a small wooden platform for the barrel to sit on so the elbow fitting would clear the ground. I just screwed it to the plate on the metal dolly. The barrel is held on the dolly with a ratchet strap.
If you need to add some pressure to pump uphill, then drill a small hole in one of the bung caps and pop an air valve in the hole. You can get the air valves in packs of 2 or 3 at Walmart for a couple of bucks. The gas will eventually take its toll on those, so plan to replace at least once a year or so when they get soft and leak air.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220709/43898e5e415d69442901cd0abc66e960.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220709/d9c64fa8be36ea914be4ef5728114e21.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220709/202f1145c47f2d35f913ad4cac9f79b4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220709/65d12ca9b9439bfab4e80d3583e31c1a.jpg

Thanks for the details! What are you using to siphon from the truck jug to the portable jug?It works way too easy. And is cheap. When I bought mine here 4 years ago it was $4.50. I bought 2 and still have both that work.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220711/cb3f9477382d452e056da7fcc66f5ac9.jpg

That turbo siphon looks easy and quick too. I have actually done that same thing many times by putting a small tube down by the larger hose and sealing the opening with my hand, then blowing to create the pressure for the siphon to start flowing. I guess someone finally got wise and made a little seal to do both. Probably making a fortune on it!

That big barrel is a nice set up and cheap. Already have the flo fast stuff otherwise I'd maybe check into building.

Fwiw here's my set up. Back the cart up to the dock. Put the containers on the dolly, wheel em down, fill.

30510Oh yeah! That works great too. Those are some big jugs. As long as it's easy and quick, it's a good setup. I did what I have just because I had easy access to plenty of the 30 gal barrels. Might as well make use of them. I have seen someone use a 40 gallon yard sprayer as the storage tank too.

And we typically go through 5 jugs of those every weekend.

I'm envious of my brothers set up. He has a massive fuel caddy (200gal?) On trailer with electric pump and a 50 ft reel hose. Pulls it on the Polaris ranger up to the dock. Bam. Has the gas delivered via truck service. Bought it at my dad's farm auction.

But he's a long ways from a gas station so it's kind of of necessity too.
