View Full Version : Moomba Makai Owners- Adding Weight?

Hey guys. I've owned my Makai now for just over a month. The wake surfing has been, what I thought until today, pretty good. Just by random chance today, two guys were sitting on the port side rear of my boat today and my God, what a huge difference it make on shaping the surf wake. Several of you guys recommended me buying 500 lbs of lead to add to that side when I first joined this forum but I didn't think that was needed until today. Got a few questions. 1. Where is the best place to buy lead weight to be placed in the boat (Tractor Supply?) 2. Where in the rear of the boat do you place the lead weight? 3. Do you just leave the 500 lbs of weight in the rear of the boat all the time? 4. Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy a 500-750 lbs ballast bag to put back there?
Thanks for the much needed advice.

I can’t speak to where the best place to buy your lead is, as I made my own melting down old wheel balancing weights from tire stores. Wakemakers has supplied weights for a lot of the members of this forum with good results. The weight will have the biggest impact and effect on your wave placed as close to the rear corners and as far forward as possible in the rear. Think of the placement of the lead as far from the centre of your boat like making a lever longer. Yes, it will displace water the same no matter where you place it but you can take advantage of the extra weight to get you closer to your desired pitch with less dependence on your centre plate. The plate achieves the desired numbers by creating lift and, in doing so, this lift lowers the boats overall displacement, losing a bit of amplitude in the wave. About 9 degrees of pitch seems to be the magic number for most modern era Moomba. With the lead place correctly to achieve this, you can save the centre plate to dial the wave down for smaller kids or for those who prefer a mellower wave. The benefits of the extra Fatsacs would be that you don’t have to carry the extra weight of lead when you trailer and the downside is you will have to give up some of your storage and you can’t be quite as exacting with where the weight is in your boat. I don’t think you will be able to just add weight at the back of your boat without adding some to the bow as well and still be happy with the results.
Congratulations on the new ride by the way!

Most boat dealers who sell wakeboats will have lead bags. A google search should help you find a distributor.
On the Makai the popular upgrade is the Wakemakers rear bags for the Makai. There are numerous threads about them in the forum.
I also suggest viewing the Wake9 channel on YouTube. Robert (aka Ragboy) has done numerous videos about lead placement and settings for Moomba and Supra boats.

As stated above your dealer should sell lead for your boat and might cut you a deal as well. If not leadwake.com has it and you can usually find a discount code floating around online somewhere. As to the placement check out Wake9s video below it is a great guide. For the Makai your best bet will be to get the wakemakers upgraded rear bags. They add the most weight in the rear most locations where it is needed. The only "issue" with them, which is actually being looked into by a few people on here, is you might lose your rear storage bins. The 21s and 22s seem to have shorter storage bins that might be usable but I am doubtful. If you can swing it the bags and lead are a great combo!

For 600 bucks I bought the Wakemakers upgrade to replace the stock bags. It adds close to 700 lbs to the back of the boat. They arrive today and I will put them in this weekend. Others have posted good results. I will let you know how they do for me. And yes, putting some big people in the back makes a huge difference on the Makai. Will see what the storage bins do.

I've got the wake maker bags in a '22 and the storage bins fit with the bags full (of water! I made sure in my last lake day). You could put some led in the bins I think.
Next time I see you on the lake, I'll say hi and you can check it out in person!

I would put your lead under the bags or in surf locker before I would put in storage trays.

That is pretty sweet that you are able to keep the newer bins with the larger bags and if it is needed storage that is huge! Are you venting them through the access hole in the bottom of the bin?

I took your advice and I am waiting until the screen reads 100% with the red dots. Then I open/loosen the vent at the top of the bags to vent until I hear the pumps kicking back on and water spits out ( usually 30-60 seconds). Seems like they are really close to getting full without venting (maybe 90%), just need a little air out to get all the way.

Sorry, meant to say “and as far forward possible in the bow”.
The Wakemakers upgraded bags are awesome (I installed them in my boat this winter) but just adding weight to the rear will improve your wave but reach you boats potential you should be adding lead in the bow to bring the pitch back down. Without some weight up front, you will have too much pitch and will have to add centre plate to bring the bow down. I don’t have Autowake so I not sure on this but it might even empty your rear bags a bit to achieve the desired pitch if now weight is added up front. If anyone has a Makai and has just added the bags and no bow weight sees this please comment on your experience.

Will see what happens there. The Makai is a bit longer, so bow rise may not be quite as much.

They might have made the tubes on the sensors longer when they did the shallower bins so they might be higher. Do you think your new bags fill higher than the height of the sensor? Is the dot turning red before the bags are full?

It is actually the opposite which is crazy to think I know. But in the factory set up using Autowake the Makai will actually keep the rears full and dump the bow ballast (a lot of times up to 50% IIRC. It has been a few years since I had the stock setup so might be a little less but it is a significant amount). That being said in my Makai with the wakemakers upgraded bags in the rear and a light crew (3 people with total weight of 650) i have 1k in lead and 900 of it is in the main cabin under the port and starboard seats right in front of my rear bags. I do have the other 100 in the very front of the bow and really just didn’t move it bc I was lazy when setting up and would have moved it if needed. With that setup my boat will ride at 9deg of pitch with all blast at 100%. To find this setup I recently used Ragboy’s procedure to rearrange my lead and that is the set up that it yielded and the wave is amazing even with a light crew.

I think they fill up about to where the sensor is (roughly just looking at it). And yes, it does turn red , but then I let air out, screen still shows 100% but the pumps start running again until water spits out the vent.

They might have placed it higher when they did the shallower bins and if so kudos to SC for being forward thinking and making it so that the mod is truly plug and play!

Awesome video! It had actually popped up in my feed before I saw it here. I am going to do the dome light mod next weekend so I can turn it off on the 4th while we watch fireworks. Did you just mount the switch with double sided tape? I never realized that the bags were specific to the port and starboard side they defintely should have put that on the box and was a definite miss on Wakemakers end. I will have to climb in there and see if I just got them right by luck lol. If you aren't using your rear trays anymore venting the bags off the top and teeing in to the overflow is a great way to go I know Hak had mentioned it as well.

For sure. l’ll probably vent the bags next. I like using the rear lockers for board storage so the trays will stay out.
I used two sided tape that came on the switch. Had one laying around.

I will just order 2 different buttons and see which one works. I won’t be back at the lake house until next weekend and I want to do it then. The one I really want to use has a depth of 1.30” as it is a flush mount and I think it will be too deep but we will see.

Ok. So I installed one of the wakemakers upgrade bags for the Makai this evening. Had to reinforce my side panels, so I have not upgraded the starboard side yet. These new bags have a strange shape I must admit. I thought they would just be taller, but you can see from the pictures with air in them that the ends are shaped differently too.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220613/76c16ec4c8b6723adf0fea78a68dcbfe.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220613/8808e22fc21f244405cbe3bf0b599c9c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220613/bd221229e03ccd9fcbc3dde64e09d62b.jpg

Here are some pictures of the new bag, Port, compared to the stock bag, Starboard. I only filled it one time and drained them. Not sure if it just needs sliding around a bit or what, but it didn't want to sit against the back wall of the boat where the fill & drain lines are. The shape doesn't really seem to fit the space exactly for something that was designed too. Maybe it needs adjusting in the space a bit, but not a lot of room for movement with the hoses at each end connected up. It also interferes with the tray about 2". Which is really a bummer. I can see where it could have been designed to get the same volume and work with the trays too. My fill sensor is also at the top of its limit unless I pop it off the hard tube and strap it to the flexible hose. I just run my pumps till the overflow comes out the side of the boat. Also burp all the air out just at or before 90%.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220613/7fad16af688e5de158373a7dd805232a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220613/a08e4cf6658b68ba60aa9cf7b6c835a9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220613/41e3d71a6b1638af18fc61819be2adf8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220613/cf60fd9e49437908747c027bb11656b4.jpg

Great set of photos on your work. To move your sensor you can just add a length of hose to the end of the tube and a 90deg fitting between that hose and one that connects to the bag and just move the entire tube and sensor up in to the back rear corner. I had an issue with my port side divider popping out all the time with my stock bags. I bought 2 of the wakemakers kits and added the stiffeners to each panel as well. I also ended up drilling a few holes in the locker side of the aluminum channel and put screws into the dividers to hold them down in there as they did this on a few of my panels from the factory but not the large ones for serviceability I am guessing. I am surprised at the space you have between your rear wall and the bag. I don't believe mine are like that but they might be and I just never noticed. I will take a look next time. The first time I filled the bags I filled them to where I could still move them and then got them all situated in the locker. Did you pay attention to get the correct bag in the correct locker? ( I had no Idea that they were port and starboard side specific and might have just gotten lucky lol)

I am hoping I can slide it back a bit to sit flush with the wall. Again that bag just has a weird shape, and doesn't seem to fit the space like I thought it would, but maybe I can adjust it. I didn't really have a lot of time to spend on it after putting it in. I also put two more screws in the middle panel when I reinstalled the dividers. I actually found two little black screws laying under my stock bag when I took it out. Had to have been there from the factory. Which was a bit scary I must say. Luckily they never punctured the bag. One of them was partially plugging up the drain hole drilled in the corner of the locker. I am going to try to readjust that bag, and who knows maybe my storage tray will fit then!

Looking at your pictures I think I actually just got lucky placing mine in the correct lockers as mine are the same as yours with the wakemakers logo on the inside or engine side of the top fittings and with the way the bags are made you couldn't have them in there in that oriantation but on the wrong side. If they were in the wrong locker the logo would be on the outside of the top fittings if all that makes that makes sense.
As far as the gap at the back wall your fittings for the bags might have gotten stuck on the edges of the holes they come through so moving them around might be an easy fix. I had the same issue as you with finding the screw in the locker drain hole.
It will be interesting to see if once you get your bags adjusted if you are able to still fit the trays as some others have stated that they can. Do you plan to use your aftermarket air bleeder as you had on your factory bags? were you able to get the trays to clear with that bleeder on top?

Now without the tray it might fit.

My bags say “Moomba” on them next the the “exact fit.” Maybe I missed it on yours, or maybe they just changed how they label them but I thought that was odd.
Also , mine have a slight “L” shape that heads towards the front of the boat. And, they appear to fill up the space side to side and front/back. I wonder if you didn’t get the right bags?

I am wondering now myself. I only installed the port bag, so.we will see if the starboard is the same way. But I am going to relook at the part numbers on the packing slip again too.

These "exact fit" Wakemakers bags are 6"shorter in length than the original Fatsac that came with the boat. This is a picture of the Starboard bags. I lined the bags up using the bottom seam corner to corner. Part# BO 498. This just does not seem right. 2021 Moomba Makai. Sorry I’m late to the party on this thread but they gave you the wrong bags. They gave you the same wrong bags I got for my Max when I got the WM kit. The customer service guy I was dealing with told me they are aware of this issue and had an employee that was making them incorrectly. The problem is that was years ago and this problem still persists today as you’re not the only one I’ve seen get the same wrong bag. I don’t know if their in-house drawing revisions get mixed up or part numbers get mixed up on work orders for the production floor but something is wrong from time to time for them on these bags. See around 9:13 in my install video how short those bags were from the bulkhead and how tight it made the connectors from those wrong bags. At the time I thought that’s just how the bags were to be made and that the hoses were made too short but it’s the other way around. They had also shipped me one wrong midship bag lol.
https://youtu.be/utVxpIgpKJk
They ultimately shipped me the correct bags though. The bags for the Makai and the Max are apparently the same as this was on my rear bag boxes…

The correct length bags will go pretty much the whole length and the upper “notched” section will be correct length as well…

Just an update; I measured the length of the floor bottom in the ballast locker. It is 48.5" total and 16"wide. I sent some pictures along with the measurements and what I was told about the bags having been made wrong in The past for some people. The reply as of Friday was they would relay this information back to engineering, but said I definitely got the right bag because the serial number indicated it was for a 2019+ Makai. However my thought is if it was accidentally made wrong, as has happened before, the serial number really does not matter.
However! I have definitely noticed the additional weight. It has made my wave so much bigger with only two in the boat!

I wished I had measured my short WM bags to compare to stock before I sold them. Would be curious just how short mine were. It was by a lot I know that because I was concerned the connectors on the rear of the bag would wear or rip over time from the stress of having to be stretched just to connect to the mid ship bags. Thankfully I never ran those bags and were given replacements by WM that now fit as they should. The rear lockers of the Makai and the Max aren’t exactly the same it seems so it is strange they made a “one size fits both boats” bag. Based off y’all’s locker and filled bag pics it looks like WM left some meat on the bone with the Makai because there appears to be more room they could have used up in the upper “notch” shape of the bags. Just going by pics of course and maybe looks different in person. In the end if the wave looks killer and rides good now that’s what really matters I suppose. Just make sure the bag doesn’t move front to back a lot when filled and I think you’re good.
I will say go ahead and plan for strengthening your engine panels if you haven’t already because mine will pop in now that they’ve been pressed on a lot over time. Going to add some metal channel stock to beef them up. The port side is more of a concern when it collapses because of the oil dip stick can take some of the bag resting on it which isn’t good of course.

I really have to say the way SC made those panel systems is not a very sturdy design. And honestly the hdpe panels are not the best material choice for rigidity either. That stuff gets soft and more flexible as the engine starts to heat it up.

Ya you could say they left some meat on the bone but I am sure it is for some legal reason as to not put the boat over the "listed" weight or something like that and because it is cheaper to manufacture since it covers more than 1 boat. Like you said it really doesn't matter as it makes the wave come alive and that is what matters.
As far as reinforcing the divider panels I just went the easy way and bought 2 of the wake makers kits and installed them. Also from the factory a few of my panels had some small screws in the channel to keep the dividers from jumping the track so I went on ahead and installed some on the ones that didn't have them. Both of those mods have helped tremendously as my port side divider would jump the track 70% of the time with the stock bags.

Kind of been following this one to see how this one would go, sounds like the WM bags are correct, but the rear storage bins wont fit with the new bags. Would love to have the extra weight but don't want to give up my bins either. Seems like if they were truly shaped to the Makai lockers the bins would still fit but cant blame them for having 1 bag to fit two different models. Guess I'll have to add a bit more lead to it, only have 350# in there currently.

Even if they were specifically made for the Makai I think you would have to lose the bins. I know the bins on my 19 were a little deeper than the 20+ but my factory bags came right to the bottom of them so I don't believe there is much room to expand with the bins installed. If you can find another place to store the stuff that is in your bins do it. It might not be as convenient but it will be well worth it. The bags make such a difference as it adds 700# as far back in the hull as possible. A bit more lead never hurt either.

We generally have a big enough crew or use to that I didnt need any more, but here lately been a smaller crew where Ive been kicking around ideas, but I know my wife isnt going to let me give up the bins. So lead looks to be the best solution. Current stack is sitting on the ledge under the rear corner seats so gear doesn't slide back out from under the seats and land on the bags. Works great for that!

I agree that a slightly different design on the makai bag with the profile towards the front being taller could get more weight in there. Also if you made the bag taller in the front and 6" longer, you could shorten the overall height and possibly get the newer storage bin to fit. My bins only needed about 3-4" to fit back in there. I may try to modify my bins to fit. I have a couple of ideas how to do it. I will photo everything if I do.

Now I am not going to say this is the first time it has been this full but it is definitely the first time I have noticed it since I have been paying attention. Only thing I can think of was it was bc I was on plane when filling heading back up wind to surf down wind and that the speed helped the pumps stuff it full?! [emoji2371] anyone else seen this?

I had to order the ball valves for mine from wakemakers. When they get that full they just vent/siphon.
Now I’ll fill them with the valve open, close when they vent out the side and it won’t allow it to continue the back flow.

No the vent wasn't kinked at all as it was spewing out. It definitely filled the entire locker which is what you would expect it to do. I am going to work on figuring out how to get them to fill like this every time though.

They definitely did pull a siphon but I just flipped the pumps to drain and it stopped it in a matter of seconds.

Wow - I just installed the same kit but no where near that full. Leaves me wondering how much weight I’m leaving on the table…lol.
I don’t have the vent setup like you do, I was unscrewing one of the caps to get the air out but when they were flowing water out the top and no air any longer I just let the pump run until I thought they were tight. No idea they could swell that big!

Man that is a bummer to hear. I will have to keep an eye on my rears panels. I used WakeMakers Kit to reinforce mine engine dividers and actually bought 2 kits as I wanted to add some rigidity to more than just the main panels. I still have 2 pieces of channel that I didn't use and the hardware to go with it so I might just add it there.

That is what I am going to try on my side panelsI will probably end up putting a longer and deeper piece of channel there. You can see in the picture that the existing one does not go all the way to the end of the carpeted panel. On the sides, I would still recommend putting some metal on them to stiffen them. Then put some small screws in the bottom to keep from pulling out. They are soft and bow quite a bit.

No, unfortunately our lake is now 4' down and I had to pull the Makai off the lift and put it in the garage so that it didn't get stuck on the lift. Our last trip up I didn't pull it out as we just played on the Jet Skis and surfed on our neighbor's Malibu as he is still able to get his boat on and off his lift (at least for the next few weekends). It seems like some others have gotten it figured out here in the post below though. Our next trip up I am going to launch the boat and just anchor it up in front of our boat house for the weekend so I will definitely try it out and report back.

Did you bags not come with a graphic on them indicating their locations in the boat? There should be a graphic of an overhead view of a boat and an overlay of a “bag” indicating where they are installed.

Ok, reviving this as we start to get close (a few months away) to my season up here….
A bit of a read but want to give as much info as possible….
I was really excited about the even larger Makai bags from WM, but, as they are still in production/development, and some soul searching over losing the additional storage space, plus the fact I have upgraded my tow vehicle… so I have pivoted a little and would be interested in hearing some advice about setups…
I have purchased a set of the upgraded WM bags, so there is the additional close to 700lbs of potential there… am working on accumulating the parts to create the venting system as many have done, as well as additional engine panel reinforcements (am working on a bit of a creative solution I will share as it comes to fruition)
Now… we did found during winterization that the centre bags were not emptying fully, and we suspect that may have also led to them not filling properly, my dealer lifted the front of the boat to fully drain, the impellers seem to be the issue, but we will not fully know until we do a lake test (more on that below)
I typically run a very small crew (myself and 5 others estimated about 750lbs), and while everyone was surfing, it surely needs optimizing with this size of a boat… I have been watching and rewatching a lot of the Wake9 stuff, and that has been so much more enlightening after having a half season on the Makai, I know understand the dynamics to the point where I feel I could make some decisions/guesses/estimations about where I need to be…
The lakes I am at the majority (90 percent) of the time are between 1000 and 1300 feet elevation….
Ok, now onto the fun stuff…
I am looking to also supplement the WM bags with lead…. Once we can we are going to lake test the boat with a lot of lead with my dealer (who has been awesome through this), but wanted to do a base setup beforehand….
First ensuring all existing bags do fill fully, so rectifying the issue with the centre bags
I was going to add 200-250lbs in each rear corner, right under the WM bags to start… who has done this? Any feedback….
Then manipulate as much lead as we need to hit the Wake9 determined settings of pitch and roll while also achieving max displacement by:
Adding lead in the storage lockers on either side ahead of the bags, adding lead to the centre of the boat (going under the track can compartment beside the batteries), and also in the very front locker of the boat…
I know some of you are using the WM bags with 1000lbs or more of lead, but your setups on board may be a bit different so I welcome any and all feedback about where you ended up and how you got there (yes I know this has been hashed and rehashed in many other threads and posts, and I have searched all my way through most if not all of them), but what a better way to spend the last days of winter right?
I was guessing I would be at:
WM Bags additional 700 (345 per side)
Under rear bags additional 500 (250 per side)
Ahead of rear bags 200 (100 per side)
Centre near batteries 300
Front bow locker 300
So about 2k more than ‘stock’…. And adjusting as/if required on the lake test….
Thoughts?

I have two opinion's to share here;
1) I personally keep my 500 lbs of lead behind driver's seat and directly opposite, in the port side space which is normally used for more leg room. You fill the boat to 100% with water ballast, with AW off, you try and get people to pick their preferred seat for the current surfer's session. Only after all of that do I start moving the lead around. Placing it under other ballast bags or gear prevents you from the flexibility that lead gives you. The worst thing that can happen is placing lead under bags and then accidentally turning AW on, and it draining your rears or bow because you forgot to turn it off or because you have 200 lbs of lead in both rears and no one wants to sit in the bow.
2) What magical place are you surfing at in AB/BC/Sask that has you in the water before mid June?

Thanks for the feedback….
For 1) my thought was the amount of ballast I am adding under the bags would be less than the additional that would have come with the even larger WM bags, so it would be static, and after studying and trying to gain some understanding of Ragboys (Wake9) data, the plan is to get the most displacement as possible with the weight and using AW to make those minor adjustments when people move around…. At least I think I am understanding it correctly lol
For 2) could be optimistic but hopeful to dunk into Chestermere mid May at best, hopefully not too much later depending on when the ice melts and they open the gates up a little, though I dont think anyone will have the stones to jump in and surf at that time…. then back off to Arrow and Kootenay Lake for the summer

This is just my persona opinion from my experience with my new second Max. I did the upgrade and then focused all my attention with lead on midship compartments and bow. That is what brought my wave to its best height and push. I prefer more push then height, but if I could get the best of both worlds, that is what I shoot for. Sometimes, when my crew likes to chill in the back and watch people surfing, I let out some rear bag weight so my pitch isn't as high. I run about a 7 degree pitch for my ideal push. From what I see, people do focus more attention on rear weight the most before they start the balance. Once you have a good balance, you can add a little in all the areas to get the hull deeper. Just food for thought

AW is an amazing tool and the new version that highlights where you need the extra weight is useful information for beginner and veteran alike. I would argue though, that once you are familar with the boat, and have gained confidence in what your boats' best wave looks/feels like, you turn it off and move people (if they're willing) or lead (if they're not) to achieve your optimals. Every time you let AW take water out of your boat the world slides one step closer to oblivion! You want 100% full at all times in my opinion. TINRFD (there is no replacement for discplacement). Wake9 has a comment in one of his earlier videos where he says exactly this, "....and we have 500 lbs of lead to move around as required".

I have never boated/surfed on any of those lakes, so this is all anecdotal but I've been told;
A) Chestermere has the same low depth issues Windermere does but Windermere is 6x the sq km. The wave you get in 10-15' of water is very different than the one you get in +20' of water. Find the topographicals for Chestermere and only surf the spots where it is 20' if possible (south end).
B) From what I've heard Arrow and Kootney are great but both have logging barges/traffic on them. Bring an extra prop!

Thanks for the feedback, I think thats where I am at, trying to get the hull deeper and balanced at the same time, we are going to bring a lot of lead out with us on the test run and adjust as required…. I am in the position where I am able to do this with the dealer here, but then for the summer I will be 7 hours away so less of an opportunity to bring all the lead out and test…. Trying to get to the best of both worlds with the one session I guess

Thanks again…. For the extra lead that was going to be part of the plan to have additional available to make up for the crew at that particular day/week… my thought it, if its 500 pounds of a total 4500 (stock ballast plus 500 lead) thats about 11 percent, or 500 pounds of a total 7500 is about 6 percent so the ability for that additional 500 to be effective becomes diminished the more of the total…. I think thats a good thing, so its only minor changes…. But I could still be thinking all wrong…
And yeah, Chestermere is awful shallow, but there can be spots 25 feet deep to test, I spent 80 percent of my time on Arrow last year, and while you have to be mindful when they are hauling logs down, it is not much of an issue and it often times maxed out my depth gauge, so my thought is if we get it as good as possible on a shallow lake, the results would be amplified is my hope….
Great discussions for sure…. Thanks all

Dukabor,
The set up in shallow and deep water can be vastly different. In <20’ of water people usually slow down 1-2 miles and hour to maintain push. That set up might not work in >20’.
I run all my lead tucked away under bags. I then get the crew to move around a bit to perfect the wave, usually my kids move around on their own as they know what the correct pitch and roll “feels” like without me saying anything. Moving bags around after everyone has picked a spot to sit means bags are visible on the floor or on seat, which triggers my ocd. You might also find that you don’t have enough lead and have to get people to move anyways. Before the first rider goes I just fill the bags and set the tabs, once up to speed I use an inclinometer app to achieve my desired pitch and roll (I don’t have Autowake). It usually only takes 10-15 seconds and only need to move one person and the others to just slide forward or back a bit and we are good until we switch sides for another rider.

Tommy, thanks for this, I was not really considering how different the depth would play into it…. This may take some additional research to ensure we achieve the right ‘base setup’ during this test run….

Installed the WM rear bags with 200lbs of lead under each bag, should be 1150is of additional rear weight now…. Now just watching the clock (or the calendar) to go for the actual lake test (if it ever stops snowing)…. My dealer has a bunch of lead in stock, so we shall see how close we get to my plan…. Still thinking 300 in the front bow compartment for sure….

Dukabor,
I hear you on the snow, I am getting sick of shoveling but hopefully Chestermere starts to thaw here shortly for you. Out of curiosity as I have been following your posts for a while (always love seeing fellow Alberta crew posts) are you planning to change your prop out with the extra weight you are adding? I am curious what you think of that prop on your boat with the extra weight when you get a chance to test it out as I have the same one on smaller Mondo and it leaves a bit to be desired when loaded with people and extra ballast (ran at least 1k over stock plus people at over 2800' in elevation) and am hoping the new lower pitched prop I ordered addresses that and lets the engine work a little less hard. Looking forward to hearing your updates once the ice leaves and you can get out with the crew at Martin and a bunch of lead.

Thanks….
With all of the moisture this winter I heard a rumour that by late April they may start filling up chestermere….
The prop I have now is the altitude/wake 15.5 x 15, and at some point there will have to be a line of diminishing returns with the weight…. Though I have been counting on some forgiveness with the ‘big boat and small crew’ situation I am in…. But that being said, if i find that the desired wake outcome is potentially being limited by the prop I will have to also head down that rabbit hole lol
The Martin MS crew has been great, I am sure having experience with a not so awesome dealer (not just with boats, with anything) makes the great ones seem that much better!

Finally had the test day today with the crew from my dealer….
To recap I went with the standard WM bag upgrade 1345 each, 200lbs of lead under each rear bag tucked into the corners, and initially threw 600lb of lead in the very front locker….
Did not adjust the timers, so filled the bags up, and did require some venting (have all the parts for the venting kit to be done at some point) took some adjusting of the bags the have them put as little stress on the side panels (already reinforced but will add some more for the sake of it) the filled right up to a great levels after that. Storage trays will not even be close to fitting and I am ok with that, gives much easier access to the bags and the Makai has plenty of storage…
Once full to give a reference of the impact, the bar above the swim platform was just underwater! Certainly noticeable how she is squatting in the water now!
Gave a few pulls, and the change in the wave was VERY noticeable, I will get pictures at some point, always hard to tell from those regardless….
Turned on AW and shot for the 9.5 pitch and -1.5 roll as a baseline, and was having a hard time getting past 8.5 at first… saw it was draining out the front bag to about 80 percent on the system and the rears port 100 and starboard 96….. took a couple tried and moved 100 lbs at a time and ended up with a total of 200 in the rear corner ahead of the bags and boom…. Hit 9.5 and -1.5 with the front at 100, port at 100, and starboard at 95…. Played around with the wakeplate between 15 and 25, and speeds between 10.8 and 11.5….
Did not have any gear in the boat and the gauge showed about 60 percent of fuel in the tank, so adding in the rest of the gear and a few more bodies will be even better and provide that flexibility to mellow it out for the beginners and should be more than enough for the ‘ experts’ !!
The 15.5x15 prop had no issue getting up on wake, but i picked up the acme 16x13 to slap on and try out as with the rest of the crew/gear/fuel it will probably be 1000 lbs or so into the boat…. That extra weight will probably tip the scales for needing a little more from the prop!
I am soooooo pleased with how this turned out…. Combine this for actually heading into this season understanding AW and how it works will be a ton of fun!!
The lake we were in was about 20ft or so deep, so looking forward to seeing the difference in the 200 plus feet of depth I have at the ‘home’ lake!!
Big shout out to Bryce and Matt at Martin Motorsports in Calgary for today and everything for helping make this happen!!

Glad you were able to get on the water and things worked out! If you do end up using the the 16x13 keep an eye on your gelcoat right at the closest point of prop rotation. On the 2021's we can't get much closer than 15.75" unless you put a plate/patch on there. I don't know if they put more clearance on the 2022's.

Thanks…. We kinda ran out of time to swap it on and give it a back to back shot, but you are right, not a ton of room under there…. Not to mention it was a tad tight with the puller, will try with an impact gun to not crank on the shaft with a bar…. Will send results when I slip it on there with some reference to the clearance

Updates:
Picking up the boat from my dealers storage today, and decided to pick up another 500lbs of lead….. I have an estimation of distribution but will move around on the water once I get out there…. I was highly impressed with the wake last year, but as a wise man once said “There is no replacement for displacement” and I will see if this puts me closer to or across the line of diminishing returns !
I was pretty lax last year on posting pics/vids for the results, I commit to doing better for all of you this year…. With last years setup, two if us in the boat, 75% fuel, typical gar in the boat, bags 100% full and the 1000lbs of lead there was a couple inches of water over the top of the swim platform….

I'm trying to remember, did you add the larger Wakemakers bags, too?

I dis indeed, I added the 1345 bags, not the 1700 or so that would take up the side storage….
Where did you end up at for pitch and roll? Were you still running 9.5?

Pausing along the drive today to stretch my legs….
I was able to get 9.5 easily (low elevation smaller crew and new prop certainly impactful)….. I will look for some old screenshots of the actuals…. I was shooting to achieve the Wake9 Makai settings and tweak from there…. What I was seeing was AW was draining the front bag to get there more than I liked…. Thus the additional ballast to help manage that…. Last year was a huge year for me really focus on AW to help drive the baselines…. Not that I did not tweak when I was behind the helm, but it allowed for the driver to have a good achievable wake when I was taking my sets….
I will say goofy side has been a challenge and my dealer confirmed potential actuator issues, and replaced over the winter under warranty (yay) so hoping that also helps as repeatability of the wave became a bit of an issue
This year is about really working to maximize the Makai wave (current plans are for an SL upgrade for next season) it is certainly not lacking, but there are worse hobbies than wave tweaking !
