Memorial day at Belews Lake, NC.

Headed out again today!

Picture from Memorial Day- was ~90 out. Water temp was 68.

Also, from day one I hated the MAX logo in the gator step on the front of the boat. Finally peeled that off. Looks much better..

Great weekend on the water. Up early and had the whole bay to myself. I actually fish with my boat some. Mounting rod holder to the tower. Skied as well as surfed. Still learning to surf but getting there.

Picked up a new 4'6" Doomswell Nubstep this weekend... had a hard time rolling myself out of bed this morning because you couldn't keep me out of the water!

Anyone else have kids that love to huck it off the side of the boat?

Spent a couple of days at Lake Powell this weekend and had a great time. 2 boats with 20 people. This arch has been underwater until last fall when the water dropped to record lows and uncovered it. Pretty cool to be able boat underneath something that has not been seen since the lake filled.

Deerfield great to hear from you! Are you still in Ashland area? I boat almost exclusively in Breton Bay. You can see it on the map it’s right in Leonardtown. Water is brackish most of the time unless we have a lot of rain. I run salt away through my engine religiously and also throughly spray down the trailer with it after each outing. Been in that water with this boat every season since 2006. No major problems at all. I did replace the exhaust manifolds and risers finally about 3 years ago. We have a slalom course tucked in right against the wharf in Leonardtown. There is hardly ever boat traffic here. I’ve been out skiing the course on the 4th of July before.

Can it recover? Seems like it would require a lot of snow/rain combined with shutting down hydropower and stopping it as a source of water in other states and Mexico.

It just wasn’t designed to support the current population right?

not sure larry. from what I can gather, too many users both residential and agricultural and not enough water coming in. no one has reacted over the last 20 years as "water rights are mine". not to mention the number of new pools in vegas/phx every year and our last 2 houses that had pools would evap 4-5" weekly. that's a lot of water loss that never makes it back into the lakes. household water in vegas is something like 90% reclaimed back to the lake.

zog is a WHOLE LOT more intune to powell than I am and knows his stuff. hope he chimes in.

complex issue with lots of moving parts and it's going to require a lot of pain from all to fix. I'm not interested in preserving boating(nice to have but not a need to have). for us it's more about water for drinking and power. powell is close to losing it's ability to produce hydro and mead lost a water intake grate a month ago due to water levels.

sad thing is one good winter and an elevated pool on both lakes and everyone goes right back to what they were doing. this is years and years to fix, not one good winter.

toured it a couple years ago and the amount of water flowing around/through/outside the house that served no purpose other than to evaporate was stupid and this is one of dozens and dozens up in the highlands/ascaya that use thousands of gallons of water.

I don't know about knowing my stuff. My wife says I am full of BS!

Colorado River management is complicated by the Colorado River Compact, drafted in 1922. Water allocations were roughly split in half under the assumption that the river long-term average water supply was 15 MAF. The lower basin (Arizona, Nevada, California) were to be guaranteed 75 MAF over a 10 year period. The upper basin (Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico) would be able to take the rest. The lower basins split their allocation in specific amounts, while the upper basin allocated percentages based on what was available. The thought was that the upper basin would be able to take more than the 7.5 MAF since the thought at the time was that there was more than 15 MAF in the system, but the upper basin was not guaranteed any water, just anything over 7.5 MAF. Later, Mexico was granted an allocation of 1.5 MAF through international treaty, so in essence the upper basin MUST deliver 9 MAF to the lower basin every year.

Hoover Dam (Lake Mead) was constructed to deliver the lower basin flows when the lower basin wants them. Glen Canyon Dam (Lake Powell) was constructed to allow the upper basin to take consistent water allocations year to year while also delivering the 9 MAF allocation every year. Lake Powell has continuously met the requirement for delivery to the lower basin until the last couple years, even with some extreme swings in water depth (Lake Powell is currently about 170 feet below full depth) while Lake Mead has also been overdrawn by lower basin users over the last 20 years, resulting in swings in Mead (currently about 180 feet below full depth).

With the drop in Lake Mead water levels, the allocation to Arizona goes down as a result of negotiations for federal funding for the Central Arizona Project. California and Nevada are guaranteed their allocations. Mexico also has a shortage allocation. Therefore, the volume required to be delivered by Powell goes down in order to prop up both lakes/dams. California and Nevada used to always take more than their allocation due to surplus water in the river system, but that has been reigned in now that there are shortages, so they are currently taking up to their allocation. Arizona has been hit with shortages the past 2 years. The upper basin states have not done much to reign in their diversions, which tend to be trans-basin diversions, with water going to Salt Lake City, Denver, and Colorado Springs, but we tend to argue that we are taking way less than the lower basin (4.5 MAF) so we are being robbed by the Compact. The Compact clearly needs to be renegotiated to deal with the hydrologic realities in the system in an extended drought condition.

Lake Powell and Lake Mead have been suffering for the past 20 years, though Mead has been much more stable. Lake Powell has fluctuated over 110 feet over the past 5 years, while Lake Mead has fluctuated about 50 feet. Two really good years would be able to restore Lake Powell to a reasonable level as the best rise over the past 5 years was over 50 feet in rise and currently lower surplus volumes have greater level impacts due to the lower volume currently in storage (like filling a martini glass). Once Lake Powell hits a level of 3605, USBR balances increasing the level of Mead with the level of Powell and plans some bumps in flow to help bring up the level of Mead, though balancing still occurs at lower levels.

As one in the water business, I can state that sandm is absolutely correct about the return to bad habits when there is good rainfall. Everyone wants to take the plenty but doesn't want to plan for the famine. I speak with lots of industrial users that start planning expensive reuse and water minimization projects during drought years, but they get cancelled when the shortage goes away. Agriculture is the MAJOR user in the basin though, with 85% of the water going there. There need to massive improvements in watering practices and perhaps some justification regarding where the water is going (Imperial Valley) before we run out of water in the system. California has been working to reduce demand but too slowly. Meanwhile, Colorado and Utah are trying to take more and more. This is all completely unsustainable.

When you start adding up the impacts of drought in the other systems such as the Snake River, Boise, Salmon, Owyhee, Humbolt, Carson, Walker, and Truckee River systems that feed the sinks and lakes within the Great Basin, you start to realize how those affect the Rockies.

Severe drought in the west means severe drought in the Midwest. One solution is gravity flumes of sea water pumped into alkali flats of the Great Basin to change the hydrology back to what it was before European settlers started damming and diverting water from the sinks in the desert. This changed the hydrology and of the basin, resulting in less monsoonal releases during the summer, and less lake effect snow during the winter.

We have the opposite of drought in the Midwest. Great Lakes levels are at record levels. I think peak was 2019-2020, highest since 1918, they have dipped about a foot but on the rise again in 2022.

No drought here.

Michigan lakes are absurdly high.

I watch the real estate market pretty closely here as we have done a few deals and you would be surprised at the number of "second" houses that are modest 500-800k houses in neighborhoods rather than the mcmansions being built up on the hills around the valley. our last culdesac had a median value of 650k. of the 8 houses making it up, 3 were second or 3rd homes. the hill behind us had a median value of 2mil. of the 14 on the hill, 2 were second homes. a good chunk of the mcmansions are vp's in the casino industry or business owners in the valley. this is their primary residence.

thx zog for the info. in the selfish me me me culture that currently permeates the US and everyone's desire to sue when someone looks at you wrong, I don't know that I see powell or mead returning to their glory days even with 2 strong years of snowfall. we sold our boat solely based on water at mead and lack of ramps and frankly if I had a timeshare at powell, it would be gone as well. I could be wrong but everyone seems to want to move to the southwest and more and more people with no real change in usage will continue to doom the lakes. the gov't may try to tighten up again(late to the party as usual) but once they do, the lawsuits will come a flyin from farmers and the navajo nation.

side note, california water usage in march is up 19% over 2020 and 27% in LA valley. think the message is getting through?

Zog
06-08-2022, 11:17 AM
I spoke with some CA friends last summer and they were surprised to hear that we were still in a drought since they weren't hearing about it in LA. Definitely need better messaging around water usage. Here it is about helping people make informed decisions. We didn't have water meters on our secondary irrigation until a few years ago. When they started giving feedback about how much water was being used, irrigation water dropped by 30% versus homes that didn't have meters. Wasteful use like that home you posted drives me crazy though. I look at the golf courses that have senior water rights and lush green lawns when everyone else is burning up and wonder why that use is so protected. They make claims about necessity, but it becomes a few prioritizing their right over the many. While legally they are correct, morally they don't have a lot of defense. While I am sad that I have lost my favorite local boating spot temporarily, I recognize that others will lose a lot more if we don't fix this situation.

I am fine with Powell under all water levels. As long as I can launch the boat, we are good. At dead pool, there will still be around 200 feet of water under the slips on the north end. They just need to get the launch ramp situation dealt with for the shifts in water level and life will be good.

A lot of it was filmed over some of my old stomping grounds, so I was getting distracted trying to figure out which valleys and mountain passes they were flying through.

Pat - Five years or so from now we will buy another direct drive to replace the '07 Outback we sold in 2016. As you note, its a great all around tow boat. Right now we are empty nesters, with the boys now grown men and starting families (Idaho, Wisconsin, and North Carolina). Yes, we still call Virginia home, living here in the rural area between Richmond and Charlottesville. My work is split between telework and the office in Alexandria. Great to see you enjoying that boat. Keep it up! - Deerfield

Not really sure to be honest.

The lake is roughly at 3537 right now. I have been there the last 4 summers around this time to the first week of July. It has been around 3600. So visually put another 65ft of water and that gives you a good idea.

Spot on!!! I too am in the water industry. Major changes that actually become the new norm are necessary. The population growth is not stopping, however, the lack of water in years to come could have an impact of population migration to the Southwest.

I missed this question when it first came up. The arch is called Gregory Natural Bridge and the bottom came out of the water at a level of around 3550 after being submerged continuously since 1969). The top is 110 feet above that at 3660. It completely blocks access to the canyon (50-mile Canyon) upstream of the bridge, though water circulates below the bridge still so the water remains fresh. The lake level at full is 3700 feet. I have seen the lake at 3685 and all the way down to 3520. You find new adventures at every water level. For example, one of the highlights of the lake is Cathedral of the Desert. Now you can walk into the cathedral and see the whole area, but at higher levels, you boat into the cathedral and are up against the ceiling, completely surrounded in sandstone on your boat. Either way, a remarkable experience, just different. When full, you get nothing from the cathedral but a narrow slot canyon that is less remarkable.

If you take her on a demo, you’ll never be able to afford life again.

My CFO hated the idea of the cost of the SA. After our first day on the water in it, she said we can’t go back down, just up!

I took that as a green light for an SL/SE this time around, but she only allowed for a few more options in the build our last SA didn’t have. Now, after loading the boat down with family, she’s suffering from two-footitus, wishing we would have gone with the SL.

They were all cheerleaders at the time and would taunt me about not being able to throw them off. What P5 are you riding?

If it has not happened yet, those boards are cruel on your body when they hit you doing wipeouts on 360s. I've taken some good thumps on my shins, better my legs vs the head area.

It’s the 56” Matrix. Yea I’ve seen some horror posts of folks with cuts on their forehead and body so I try to keep that in mind. On one of those wipeouts you’ll see it also hits me in the head so I just try and cover myself in the water and hope for the best lol.

The only thing I would say about my experience learning 360's is that you need to get right up to the back of the boat to have enough time to do the spin and recover.

Mxmark4
06-21-2022, 06:02 PM
So of course no video of this but I have been trying to learn 360s. I have also been trying to teach a 7 year old to surf. Had him on the board a couple weeks ago and went for a spin and got not one but two complete rotations! Of course I lost the wave and we sank but the feeling of throwing a 720 with a kid between my legs was awesome! Now to just get my 360s where I stay in the wave!

Last time out I was getting tired, so I usually end my run with a 360 attempt. I run up close to the boat and initiate my turn, and the cousin driving the boat chops the throttle due to unyielding traffic and what he thought was a water cop.

I got thrown mid spin into a back-flop on the crest of the passing wave almost hitting my head on the swim step. I separated a rib, and am just am now recovering.

My wife was so pissed at her cousin because he had plenty of room and didn’t need to shut down.

Right after we got our boat I was out for the first time trying to surf behind it. Was my wifes first time driving our new to us boat and I tried to be cute and jump onto swim platform from my board when I told her to shut it down. Our platform has whatever moomba used to use prior to gator step which is super slick when its wet. I didnt realize that and crumpled into a ball when i hit it with my feet. Hurt like hell and she thought she had killed me. Definitely a lesson learned.

The wife’s been a trooper recovering from the accident! I assumed boating was out of the question til at least August but we made it happen. Came up to the lake for a couple days for our anniversary with no kids (we were supposed to be in Jamaica right now for the week).

Finally got a drone! Been wanting one for a while.

It was the perfect day to test it at the lake today! I clearly need more practice driving it or using it’s automated features, but for this having been my 3rd time flying a drone, I’m very happy!

No. My buddy was helping. There are some automatic features I want to get used to for when it’s just the two of us.

These things have come such a long way that it’s close to impossible to crash them.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkYou are right about that, but be careful if you fly under trees, open shelter, or anything where you may lose signal. Especially if it's close to your range limit. The return to home feature kicks in after your predetermined signal loss, and the first thing it will do is fly straight up to whatever height you have programed in. Which will crash it into the roof of say an open carport or barn, whatever. Had a friend who damaged two of his that way. Low battery, critical low, will do some unexpected things too all of a sudden. You get plenty of warning, but after a while you sort of know you still have some time to not be in a hurry when the warning goes off and can become complacent. That's when it gets you! But yeah the controls are easy!

My son competed in his first wakeboard competition yesterday. He's never ridden behind a g23 and unfortunately fell twice. He had a great time and was super excited when they called his name for 3rd place.

Congrats !!! Looks like your son is loving it.

I have heard the G23 wake is aggressive with a step in it and takes time to adjust to.

We normally pull him at 15.5 and have a real clean wake behind the 21 mojo but the g23 was complete white water. Had to bump him up to 17 and it still wasn't super clean :(. Oh well, he's only 6 and had a blast.

I have a buddy that came out to the lake yesterday with his drone and did some filming. Just out having some fun behind the mojo.

Finally got some water time. I welcome a fast way to wipe the boat off while it’s on the lift!!

@Schlanseay Did you try tying a tube to the dock and floating around the boat while wiping down?

I think we all appreciate how awesome that situation is! Nothing better than having the water to yourself. Great stuff.

Yeah I do that about once a month but want a better solution for when I get off of the water right away. I’m thinking of an irrigation system with sprinkler heads.

I was still in a walking boot like that when boating season started. I bought a 2nd boot and took out the 'rocker' on the boat with some hydroturf. And was able to surf with it.
