View Full Version : Question on the new SternShade

New for 22 Moomba mentions a stern shade (rear bimini extender). Theres very little details on website but it does say can be attached on any A3 tower and older models.

Anyone been able to find more details regarding if this really can be installed on A3 towers for no 22 models?

I called dealer and they didn't know, and sounded less confident if it could be used on any models other than 22s.

Are there better aftermarket options for rear bimini extenders?

I’ve seen the Supra ones on 22s.

I really like that. Wonder what it would take to make those shades attach to a 2021 Makai.

I understand these make a ton of sense in the hot south, but these would annoy me to set up and take down.

If it was to hot, I would probably look into the water mist cooling systems. I think MaliBU offers them as a factory option.

I’ll let you guys know how the rear shade sets up when ours gets delivered in March.

I asked my dealer if I could get a quote on the stern shade for my 2019 Craz. He said they tried to install them on the older models and it caused hull damage. Said the 2022’s are reinforced foe those shades.

I’ve seen people take the old direct drive ski boats and try to mount wake towers. It can be done, but over time there is not enough glass support for the areas where the towers mount to the boat. Thus they start cracking. You can actually push on them and feel the small bow.

I think that's a load of BS because they don't want to do it.
There's no real force on anything and it's a metal insert that bolts into the glass, very very little likelyhood of damage.

A wake tower yes absolutely, I mean you're putting 1000's of lbs of force on it when you're pulling up a boarder, but a tent pole holding a tarp? Yeah they are blowing smoke up your ass IMO

There is no way that tent and poles requires hull reinforcement lol. That dealer is full of it.

I would agree, this would be no different then adding a phender pro fitting.

Easy enough to epoxy a small reinforcing block under the fiberglass if needed too.

Just the dealer making up BS excuses because they don't want to/don't know how to do what you're asking.
Those sections of the hull have no issue with a 250lb guy standing on them, they aren't going to care if they are supporting a tent pole.

Does anyone know what fitting these tent poles use?

Have y’all seen this system from TACO marine? It uses rod holders to lock the poles in. Make sense to have rod holders on a fishing boat but I wonder if the ones on wake boats are similar or scaled down?

Hopefully. I didn’t bother to ask my sales guy when he called the other day. I’ll ask next week.

My old Mojo has cup holders at the rear corners. It wouldn't take much to machine an insert that would replace those with rod holders. Go ahead and make a couple hdpe rings for the underside to reinforce the glass and screw them down. If I can get the angle similar to Taco Marines video, just order the kit from them and done.

The front is a different story but the point of the boat is to have some sunlight....lol

Something like this would work fine,

I was told same thing about not being able to add them to my 2022 Makai because it’s not reinforced unless it’s ordered that way.

So the “tent” poles are carbon fiber 5/8” dia. 4ft in length. Very stout https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220323/16eae90e1fc35fa2d3fec438fed50c9b.jpg

I haven’t looked at the mounting area yet to assess the reenforcement, but given it’s proximity to the cup holder (SA, SL, SE) I can’t see what more they could add their.

The tarp is the same as screen shading mesh, not canvas, so it will allow airflow. There are two buckles that connect to knobs on each side of the tower. It was too windy for me to set up yesterday and take picks. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220323/c42bba141463035aa2503c189f18631f.jpg
I’ll take more picks today when we take it to storage.

Yea, I was surprised how stout those poles were and how well they fit into the mounts.

I bet if you reach behind that cup holder area it is reinforced.

Typically it’s a styrofoam pad with holes in it and then they resin over the styrofoam.

That looks awesome! I may have to look into that to see if it will work with our Sewlong Bimini.

That looks like it sits above the tow point so you could pull a surfer up with it deployed. Where did you get it?

I like the retractable feature.
$1350 is a lot of coin for a little shade. That is a hard sale in Ohio, but it looks awesome.

That’s it! I lucked into this one as used for less than half that…and the pictures don’t really do it justice in terms of its length…it’s 60 inches long…on our Max, it reaches the back deck compartment area.

We have yet to hit the water with it, but on the website, there are videos of it being deployed while driving. You can install with brackets up or down and I chose up and tow point is definitely out of the way, so hopefully surf with it out like that. And the manufacturer is sugarhouse.us
