Figured I would ask the infamous question and see where it takes us.
I'm in Ohio. The weather is crap at the moment and the high temp today was 67 @ 6am and dropping to 56 throughout today. Weekend looks to be highs in mid 70's and overnight lows in low 50's. Water temps are going to drop quickly, was at 76* last weekend from 85* earlier this summer.
So how long to wait before biting the proverbial bullet and winterizing? Do I stick it out and buy a wetsuit to extend the season?
Just do not want summer to end yet!!!
Buy a Suit! I love how quiet the lake is this time of year and makes for great surf sessions. We had the best sessions of the year last weekend.

I am done when water temp drop below 70f, my kid has a shorty wet suit and will surf with water temps to 60f.
We will still cruise and enjoy a few beverages on a nice fall day watching the fall colors.
Heated seats, heater and windshield closed and bow divider in is rather comfy.
I winterize when overnight temps get into the 30’s.

in colder climates we lived in, typically when air temps drop below 70 we stop. 65deg on the driveway seems a whole lot colder than 65deg on the lake.
water temps in boise never went above the mid-upper 60's even in late summer. we used wetsuits down to high50's. lower than that we pass.
wetsuits make cold water bearable and as mentioned, typically only the hardcore out in suits so lakes are pretty nice.
now here in vegas, we boated up until mid november with air temps in the 70's and water the same. we had to stop due to layups from the insurance.

Man, our lakes here only reach 70 as a high.

And that would work if the air temps were 80+
I technically use 130f combo of air and water.
Just more anxious in the spring then the fall.
I drive more than surf so I am still having fun with the kid surfing away

By this standard, it is 57* air temp right now and water is listed at 73* online at my local lake.....you would have more balls than me to go out today....LMAO

My son and I wake boarded behind the jetski last November When we had a couple of 70゚ days. I can't remember what the water temperature was but mid fifties, LOL. If you're gonna buy a wet suit buy a 3 mm semi dry suit. These are most versatile.

this. we bought 2/3 wetsuits and they were great for upper50's water temp. surfing I'd also recommend neoprene aquasox. keeping the feet warm helps a TON if not in bindings.

When I was much younger, it was always the challenge to Jet Ski and Snowmobile on the same day.
Then we figured out that snowmobiles were so much faster on open water…..then started drag racing snowmobiles against ANY jet ski for money, Sucker bet.
Good times

I’m also in Ohio and typically run until mid October at our lake (Seneca lake) or when weather craps out. We have to be closed up by the 31st so I usually pull. It mid October to give me time to close up. We finished last weekend for boating this year as the mojo just sold. Now it’s the hardest time as we wait for the 22 to show up this winter. 1st time we have been boatless in over 10 years but it will be worth it!

Trust me, if I lived south I wouldn't have even posted this. I have friends in San Antonio and most years they are at the lake for Christmas Eve. They are thin blooded now after living there for 10 years, so they don't swim, but the kids will. Otherwise they drive to Corpus Christi for the week and hang out in the Gulf.

My nephews from TN come down sometimes in the winter and want to go swimming in the pool. We look at them like they have lost their minds, but they jump right in like it's no big deal.

We throw on the dry suits and get out as long as we can. These were from 2010 and i will say we haven't gone out this late in a long time but Oct and Nov with a dry suit can be really nice! You have the lake to yourself and nothing but glass. We have a heater and shower in the boat and it helps keep you nice and warm.

And the winner of my question of "BIG KAHNUAS" goes to.............
Yeah not surfing on the lake in the snow, but I get where you are coming from. The dead silence you get after a set and killing the engine would be awesome.

996, seeing your pics reminds me of larry gebert in boise. saw him on the lake many times thru the years and he was a beast on the ski.
18 years straight of waterskiing once every week. heard sometimes they were the only boat on the lake for weeks at a time in january/february...
he did the news feed at our annual work golf tourney for make a wish and he's a BIG dude. was fun to watch him ski.

Now those are cool pics with the snow on the ground. Only thing that could make it better would be some close up of the skier with ice forming on his eyebrows! SUPER BIG Kahunas!

Back before I had kids I was big into standup jet skis. Fall meant Vol Navy and cruiser boat/ yacht wakes to jump. So my entire fall was spent chasing boats into downtown Knoxville and jumping big wakes. Wetsuit definitely helped extend the season. We qould go out on New years day and ride and usually by then water temps were really starting to come down. I still have the wetsuits so I am gonna try and extend my season out as long as I can. No one else might want to ride but i am gonna go for it.
