Mine were too short too for surf board. I just bout some small bungee cords with the little ball on the end for tarps from Walmart. Put one of them on as an extension and they work fine.

Once you finally hook it just leave the board in the rack hooked up for a while. At first mine were near impossible and I used an extra bungee however now they work great and are still very tight but manageable

I bought new ones when I bought my boat to fix a broken one. They are very stiff but will stretch out in the sun if you can get it around a board. Use a strong board though. I wouldn't put my $700 surfer in there that tight.

just extend them with cheap bungee cords.

Thank you guys for the information. This confirmed my suspicion.
Personally I think the bungees should be somewhat adjustable. The way they are does not seem like a good design.
I did extend them with a regular bungees from autozone but I’m working on a cam clamp solution to get away from bungees all together.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkLet me know how your clamp idea works out. I had similar thoughts, but never have time to pursue it.

I would imagine there is a easy mod that can be done to get rid of the bungees. I was thinking about the straps that are on Rollerblades. If they sold something of that sort that was long enough. Seems like it would be easy to bolt those on.

I don't think these are long enough, but this is what I was thinking about. https://www.amazon.com/Pieces-Replacements-Skating-Buckles-Accessory/dp/B07DVNKH3G/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=rollerblade+strap&qid=1629515932&sr=8-4

The ratchet straps are definitely a good idea.

My idea was to use these self adjustable hold down clamps. These can adjust from 3/8 to 2 3/8.

Well, a couple of weeks ago I was lucky to buy a great set of toggle clamps (https://www.sandfieldengineering.com/toggle-clamps/). But there is clearly no cam clamp. I like your idea and I'm ready to try it. It would be nice if someone could point me to a good shop where I can buy this. I'm on vacation right now, so I have time to experiment. And there is a week before the trip to the coast. I think in a week I can try all possible tips and have time to come up with something of my own.

Dude, I have the same issue and toggle clamps have been on my mind for a longest time.
I think you are on a right track with the adjustable toggle clamp

It's fairly simple to just build new bungees whatever length you want.
just buy the cord and whatever end fittings are required, that's what I did when I redid the ones on my last boat and it worked out great and cheap.
