View Full Version : Changing Plugs, Dist Cap and Wires

I was advised on another thread to change the cap, wires and plugs for my 2007 Moomba Outback LS with a Indmar Assault 325. I was very careful to remove the plugs one at a time and place the correct wire back on the plug. Did that then added the new cap and then replaced each wire one at a time. I turned the key and it makes a noise but doesn’t kick over. I’m at a loss. Not sure what step I forgot or did incorrectly. Please help.

If it won't turn over you may have inadvertently loosened a connection to the starter while changing the plugs. It is on lwr left of the engine. May want to wiggle the connections and see if they loosened. I was working on my 06 XLV at the beginning of the season and had something similar happen. One of the main wiring connection plugs near the ECU and just below the trim tab reservoir came loose but not all the way out and had me pulling my hair out. Clicked and acted like a dead battery. If none of that works and the battery is fully charged I would suggest pulling the plugs back out and trying to turn the engine by hand. If it does, bump the engine over without the pugs in and see if it'll spin. If it does and then won't spin with the plugs in you may have the wires in the opposite spots. I would tend to think loose connection first though.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll check all connections and try again. What a pain in the arse.

Hopefully it helps. To be clear though, it's not turning over and just clicking ? Or is it actually turning over and not firing ?

It’s making some sort of electrical sound. Not the clicking you’d hear from a bad starter and not turning over.

Do any of the lights or gauges on your dash come to life? Or are they dead too?

They all work. I checked the ballast bag and it works. Battery is fine. Boat was just in the water last weekend.

Ok, when mine was acting up my dash went dead too. Hope you find it and it's an easy fix. Just search all around where you were and check all the connections. They are deceiving little buggers.

Thanks again. I’m going to have a beer and calm down before I get back to it.

Is it a clicking or more of a buzzing?

Sounds like a starter relay to me.

In your other post, the boat was sluggish but started fine. Now that you’ve changed plugs and wires it won’t even crank. You could put 8 different kinds of spark plugs in and mix up all the spark plug wires and it would still crank over. It would backfire and not start, but it would still crank. The two are are unrelated.
If you brought the boat in to me, I would check all electrical connections at the battery and grounds. Do you have dual batteries? If so, check the battery selector switch. Yes, you could have a bad starter relay, but it started fine before you worked on it.

Yes it started fine before I worked on it. I’ll admit I haven’t changed plugs on anything since my high school car but I did that without any problems 25 years ago. This has me baffled. I don’t know if I have dual batteries. Ive only seen one battery. Where are you located?

St. Louis. I don’t do side work anymore though. If you had dual batteries, they would be mounted next to each other.

I figured it out. The battery needed to be jumped and the plug gaps were wrong. Fixed both and runs like a top now.
