View Full Version : Locking/securing boards in PTM racks against theft

A future boat owner was looking at my board racks and asked if there was a way to lock the racks to discourage opportunistic theft.

His concern was that he would like to leave the boards in the rack while boat is parked overnight in his marina.

Anyone seen a solution?

You could use a cable lock to secure them to the rack. I would suggest taking them out of racks and putting them under cover or taking them with you. Don't let laziness cost you money. Thieves are opportunistic and only go after easy targets most of the time.

Agree, boards are too expensive to leave in a marina and frankly most boards won’t tolerate that much UV/heat while clamped.

Take them with you.

That’s my thought, and what I would do, but I just wondered for his benefit if someone found a solution for PTM racks.

Was thinking the surf locker should be lockable.

Out of sight, out of mind. All valuables are concealed somewhere before we get to the dock or taken with us.

From memory this might work. Just have to check the specs on the factory latch.

funny. our old supra launch20 had a couple of those that were lock-able from the factory. looked very similar to that. had 3 keys to that boat. start, jockey and rear latches.
what's old is new again :)

It would be cool if the passenger side front seat locked (front & back).

Lots of good storage there. Same key could fit the back locker too.

My thoughts are a single key actuated switch that engaged electric locks. Many first responder vehicles have these on their compartments. Simple relay system and actuators. It could engage on every hinged seat and door compartment.

Where did the Supra go? Someone's offer was too good?

Yup. Not too many times you can profit on a depreciating asset.

I have to have surgery in the next couple of weeks, so my summer is screwed. Drought has us out of water, so we went fishing for a buyer.

Next summer my wife will be consumed with work and school, and I’ll be back in school as well.

2023 she’s promised me a new SA.

Currently boatlessIn your case, I would have sold too. I sold my Crownline at the beginning of the summer after I had secured the Makai and sold it for 11k more than I bought it for. It was in above great shape though too. Had someone on the lake here just buy a 21 SE550 , used it once and then sold it for 40k more than he bought it. It's some crazy times!!
