Curious on people’s thoughts about which to buy? New or lightly used moomba vs a 3 or so year old Supra?

Is their a specific model Supra you are looking at? If you go back 3-4 years on one or two of the models you may start looking at the previous design. If you list the year and model the guys on here will let you know if it is a current or older design.

If it were me and I found a used Supra in a current design, and good used condition I would probably tend to lean that direction, but again, give us specific models for Moomba that you are considering so we can give better advice. Both great boats though.

What year did the g6 ballast debut in Supra? I know it was 2018 for moomba (and iirc same year for Supra) which is what prompted me to go ahead and sell my Outback V and order a 2018 Max. To me the 6 pump system was a game changer and I wouldn’t consider a used Supra without it over a new (or slightly used) Moomba with it in the same price point.

Like a 2017-2018 SL vs 2021 makai

What year is each Supra redesigned?

I just went through this process. I think it comes down to what options are most important to you. I started looking at Moombas, but decided on the Supra once I got in one and saw the quality of the interior. 2018 Supras have the updated power tower and Swell Surf system which was a big plus to me.

Why did you sell your 2018?

To order a 2021 SA. The 18 SA is an amazing boat.

I would sell my 18 SA, only to upgrade to a 2020 SA. 3 years of warranty left as I bought it October 2018.

The 18 SA is the sweet spot IF you can find one for sale, incredible wake and wave performance with all the luxury.

Have you been in/rode behind any 2016 or newer Supra?

And I don’t see a 2018 Supra price being close to a Moomba price. What is your price goal?

2018 SA is around $100-104k, 2021 Makai will be near that.

Cool. You are right I guess. They are similar even the length is close.

Haven’t seen an 2018 sa at $100k.

What is different from 2018/2019 SA vs 2020/2021 SA? Anything big?

larry_arizona
10-11-2020, 08:23 PM
2018 has power tower and swell 3 plus 6 ballast pumps

2019 added dual vision touch screens, walk through transom and chill tech vinyl, some mid year models got the 1.76 trans with the 450.

2020 next generation SA with new hull, 1.76 transmission on the 400/450 sub floor ballast, dual 12” subs, all hinged seats.

2021 SA, thruster option, gatorstep flooring, new windshield, new captain chair, heated observers seat, in floor cooler, new heated steering wheel with controls standard mid year.

Serious question since the debate has brought up power tower. For those that own one do you lower it every trip?

I lower my tower twice every trip and lower it to cover the boat, it's very convenient... I'd sell my 18 SA around $100k if anyone is interested. I'd be replacing it with a 2020.SA

Love the power tower. I also drop mine twice per trip. Awesome to trailer with it down and put the cover over it.

Really the best parts of the new tower are a bigger Bimini and the option of the over tower cover.

Lowering a power tower or a weight assisted tower isn’t a ton different.

Well, 1 you push a button, the other you unlock handles, that's pretty different, lol.. way more headroom as well with the power tower, and all power tower boats are G6 and swell 3.

True, those levers are a real bearcat.

Mainly talking about the “power” part. Not the tower part—and certainly not advocating the pro tower over the FX1.

In other words, buy it because it’s a better tower with a better bimini and an over the tower cover, not because it’s powered.

Well I have a 19 Max, and my buddy has a 17 SA. I surf it all the time. I just surfed it yesterday. It has a great wave, and a nice JL system. Its hard to say I wouldnt trade him, because I dont think they are equal value. BUT I dont think Id buy his SA over a New Moomba. The 17 is the G3 system. The G6, and 3-4 more years of warranty would be more valuable to me.

That 2017 SA are listing in the $90’s and 2019/2020 Max’s in the $70’s.

Warranty is valid point.

Yeah, that's why I'd be dumb not to trade. LOL But a 2020 or 2021 Max with new trans, more upgrades, a lot more warranty, and prob less money....Im buying that for sure. My boat is in the shop right now for several warranty issues. My buddy will be putting his 17" SA in the shop this winter for a few warranty issues.

Obviiusly, externally the boats look different. I don't see a huge difference internally tho. The 17 SA still has analog gauges, but that could be a plus for some. It has Steering wheel controls, more interior lights, the JL system, and rear storage at the platform.

The G3, less Warranty, and Bimini top are big negatives for me. The 17 top doesn't have board storage. Thats the 2 board slots I use the most.

We use the tilt function ask the time as well for shade and more than once driving when caught out in the rain. It has a lot of benefits.

The one trick I like is with Bimini deployed you can tip the tower forward to basically seal off the windshield if you get a quick rain.

You said you are comparing a 2017-2018 SL to a new Makai. I thought the SL was introduced in 2018 so I don't think there is a 2017. The 2019 helm controls in the SL changed substantially - more touch screens, less buttons. The boat is fantastic. If the prices were the same, that would be a very tough choice.

Correct, 2018 was first year for SL.

My opinion is 2018 SL > 2021 Makai

If the SL is anything less than a 550 I would buy the Makai every time, regardless of price delta.

The SL needs decent power—and the new trans ratio really makes it a lot better. Or a blower...

Not really going to argue your point as I think you owned one or both boats.

But wouldn’t the Makai need the same power as the SL as you need to add so much lead to really get the Makai to throw a good wake.

New Makai has 1.76:1 trans for both 400/450.
2018 SL has 1.5:1 with 400/440.

The difference is dramatic. And, as the Makai definitely needs 1500 more pounds of water or lead to shine, the SL IMHO needs 1000 to shine. So the ultimate end is about the same.

By far the best 2018 SL would be a 550, as it has no power concerns. For some reason, the SL moves through the water less efficiently than some others IMHO, and likes adequate power.

Can’t go wrong, but in that scenario I am opting for the new Makai. The ceiling is higher.
