After seeing an idea I previously had come to life with Malibu, I'm going to really consider my next idea but don't know how to get it off the ground.
I've been brainstorming a new feature for boats but I have a few issues on where to go with it. First, I am not an engineer nor programmer so I don't know how to even get started.

Without providing too much information, I will just say it obviously involves boats, technology, thrusters, etc.. Think of Autowake technology but for a different purpose.

I know this idea would be really helpful on certain days and/or limited crew.

Any smart engineers/programmers out there want to have a chat? PM me and I will provide my number.

Might be dumb, might be great? I could def see this option on the Supra, Malibu, Mastercraft, Nautique lines...

I'd reach out to idboating on the tige forums. he's an engineer in a small company that makes tech for wakeboats and also created the replacement panels for the old speedsets with no manuf. support anymore. not sure the guys name that posts on the forums but he's a weath of info and seems to be a pretty good guy when posting.

Have some way to document its your idea before you share it with anybody. Maybe an email to your wife explaining your thoughts and concept so its dated etc before you present it.

Just my two cents in case your idea is gold.....

It’s a tough process honestly.

First thing I would do is a patent search to make sure someone else hasn’t applied for a similar product.

Second, Get a patent started, but it’s a double edge sword.

The problem with a patent is someone with the means can take your idea and modify it and take it to market and owe you nothing.

Sounds like your idea is both hardware and software and that certainly increases the help you will need and the risks of trusting the people you are helping you.

Humans by nature are greedy.

My patent literally started with a sketch I made on a napkin. I’m not even joking. We took a photo and emailed it to some managers and that was considered the “date of Prior Art”.

Unfortunately I’m not a millionaire as a consequence,as the company I worked for owns the rights. I just god an atta-boy one time payment. Oh well.....c’est la vie.

I had some Master's classes on bringing technology to market. On the patent front, suggest snail mailing yourself the idea for official records. Maybe dated emails work, IDK but that was the advice of the professor 15 years ago.

Email is fine. Email yourself and someone you trust.
