View Full Version : Is this enough prop damage for a massive vibration?

We were cruising along around 12mph when all of a sudden the boat has a debilitating vibration. Our first assumption was we hit something but we were in deep water. It could have been a small log though. We immediately stopped. We cruised back at 3MPH. Turned boat off, restarted it, and tried once to slowly accelerate. Massive vibration. The boat is not driveable. Pulled it out and see minor prop damage. I’m praying this is enough to create the vibration, as we have a spare prop, but i fear it’s something worse. We owned an older outboard with more prop damage than this and zero vibration.

I see no damage to the shaft.

Thoughts? Pics attached

Probably a floating tree trunk or branch called deadheads where I live. Hard to spot them but most of it is underwater and very and almost impossible to see. Try the other prop and see how it works.
Good lesson for those who don't carry a spare prop. Game would have been over.

Except we don’t have a prop puller and we are in a very remote place.

I think that would definitely cause the vibration. He'll earlier this year I had something wrapped around my shaft and it caused bad vibration. Pulled the boat out and apparently it fell off while loading or waiting for truck. I think I had some trot line wrapped around mine so if that could cause vibration I'm sure your big ding would certainly cause it.

we got something wrapped up in our prop last year. driving about 23 mph and out of no where the whole boat started to shake. No impact or anything. We stopped immediately and tried going again and we still shook, bumped reverse and tried again and no more vibration. We pulled it out of the water to double check, no damage anywhere. it was crazy.

Weeds wrapped around a prop will cause vibe.

Doesn’t take much and yes that ding will cause a vibration

Speaking from experience, 2 log strikes this seas on - that will most certainly cause the vibration. Most likely that’s the only thing wrong. Delta propeller repaired one of my props. The other had a small crack in the blade and they said it couldn’t be repaired due to liability reasons.

There’s a kit you can buy that I highly recommend. It comes with a 2 sided bag - on one side, you store the spare prop and on the other side of the bag there is a prop puller, needle nose pliers, a crescent wrench, spare prop nut, key way and cotter pin. The kit is like $150. I bought mine from delta propeller.

We barely nicked the prop and had a vibration. nettles Fixed it and also said it was slightly bent and that’s where the vibration was coming from .you have to really wack something to damage the shaft

absolutely that is enough to cause vibration. Vibration can be caused by a lot less than that..

Yes, that'll cause a pretty good vibration. I had enough vibration from this (attached) to scare men into going to the dealer. I didn't see it at first then the owner found the small ding https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200706/6d2fdb9a91cc4ea157bdf5c6bae895b1.jpg
