Would prefer the easiest install lights.

Plug lights are great.....................till they dont fit past the wake plate or after you install one, the wake plate comes up and hits it.

Here is the one that I just installed......cleared the wakeplate just fine, but not the brightest. I got the 10W and it looks like they have the 20W now so I would opt for that one.

I just ordered the same unit due to the price.
It is pretty decent in testing.

That light appears to have a quick disconnect, can it be removed to allow for the oil drain hose to still pass through the plug hole? That would be ideal. I was looking at the Loki lights, but you can’t get the oil drain through them.

You can unthread it just like a normal drain plug if that's what you mean by quick disconnect.

Nice. For that price I am going to try the 20w. I don’t need to see 10’ down in the water, just looking for an accent light.

Does your 10W only have 9 led chips? I think they sent me the wrong light. According to their buyers guide, my 20w light should have 20 led chips. Clearly it does not.

Forgive my ignorance, how are these lights powered? I have a 2019 Helix the drain plug is in the center, is there another plug near my swim platform?

jcarter20
06-13-2020, 08:48 PM
Yes, there should be another drain plug in the rear just above the wakeplate. My boat was pre-wired for underwater lights in the back. I used one set of leads to light up the Moomba on the back and now will use the other set for the plug light. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200614/fb9c004b570518cd1cebe50c66691d90.jpg

What light did you use for the Mona logo?

Where did you find the 2 sets of wires? I assume the craz and mojo harness are the same.

jcarter20

I removed Moomba emblem and put LED tape light in the top of housing. I just made sure to clean the surface I applied it to really well with alcohol. So far it has stayed in place. I also had a metal shop water jet a stainless steel overlay for the Moomba. Has nothing to do with lighting, but I thought it looked pretty sweet. The wires on my Craz were hanging out of the wiring harness in the rear on the port side. Just remove the cover panel in the back and mine had two leads labeled “Under water lights”.

As for this Fire Water Marine plug light....I am becoming highly skeptical. I went to install it tonight and the threads are not long enough to properly seat the plug. It did not come with an o ring either. I am going to pick one up tomorrow and hopefully be able to make this thing work. I may use some form-a-gasket also. It just makes me nervous that it is going to leak. It won’t be an issue to clear the wake plate though.

Mine was the same way.......I used some plumber's tape on the threads and have been watching closely but no leaks yet after being in the water constantly over the last 3 weeks.

Curious how you ran the LED and wires through the blower ducts to wire it up? I looked at doing the same with some left over LED strips I had but noticed it was sealed up pretty good. That housing looks great btw!

On the plug light, I have a similar one and it also only tightened a few threads. At first I used thread tape but it had a slow leak, so I dabbed on some rtv sealant and it seems to work good so far. I just tighten as much as I can but it hasn't failed in about two months of having it on there.

Sounds like the plug light has straight threads and pile thread. Thats a bad match.

jcarter20
06-16-2020, 03:55 PM
I ended up putting an o-ring in there and was able to tighten it really well. We will see if it leaks this weekend. You are correct MLA, straight threads.

As for the wiring to the Moomba light. I drilled a small hole in the plastic housing and ran the wires through that. I didn’t come up through the exhaust hose. I taped a wire sheath around the wires so they don’t rub through the plastic coating on the wires themselves. We will see how long the tape lights stays. That 3m tape is pretty good, but I am expecting it to delaminate at some point down the road.

Just ordered the 20w plug light , I’m glad I saw your posts about the fit. Is there any concern about the thread difference damaging the existing threads ?

The concern is that straight threads do not mate with pipe threads. You run the risk of the plug light coming out of your garboard, resulting in water intrusion.

Sorry, I am wrong on the straight thread. It is 1/2” NTP, which is the the same thread pattern as the plug. It threaded in just fine. It is not tapered at the end like the stock plug and the threads could have been a little longer to get the plug light to seat tightly before hitting the plug housing. For added precaution, that is why I added a rubber o-ring in. It feels solid to me and I do not expect it to leak and definitely not unscrew. I will report back after this weekend.

What/where do you plug the light into to power it? I have unused auxiliary switches on dash but no idea how to connect light to power it.

Some of the newer model boats seem to have wiring already in the harness - i could not find those in my 2013 so i just ran wiring from the AUX switch back to the stern to power the light.

I did the BoatPlugLight 8000 lumen light. It does very good. Had to do a small extension and a 45 degree adapter to get it to clear my wake plate. I highly recommend it though!

I know this won’t do any justice for a water pic, but here it is on the trailer in the barn. The 20w seems decently bright.

Ok. I can give the 20w light a $40 rating. [emoji23]. It is worth what I paid for it. Not super bright, but good enough for me. This picture was taken at dusk, so take it for what it is worth. It you are looking for a lot of light, this is not the light for you. It provides a glow at the platform. No leaks though, so that is good.

I used mine last weekend as a pool light in the lake.
Put the battery on the beach at the lake and threw it in. Quite nice.
I am actually going to put one under an innertube with the battery on top like a buoy for a cool glow around the swimming area.
Too cheap not to.

Depending on the model/year of your boat, there may already be access to wire hookups in the current wiring.....i wasn't able to find that on mine but just ran a simple set of wires from the helm area (hooked to one of the accessory switches) to the stern. If you're not comfortable with that, then I would suggest getting help with the install.

Do you think you will be able to just swap out the light and the short section to the disconnect or are you planning to replace the whole wire?

The stern plug on my Helix is above the center plate it would seem the light would just shine on the plate and not light up the water. Does the light only light up the water if plate is at 100%?

Correct - the LEDs are right in the front of the plug, so the light emanates out right above the wake plate, not down into it.
