Hey everyone. Summarizing the boat and wanting to change the oil. I have what looks like 2 kinds but both say sae 30.

Which one do I use?

Which boat? I’m pretty sure you need SAE 50, I know my 2017 does. I used Valvoline VR1 racing oil with ZDDP in it for extra protection.

If its a Walter v-drive, they call for a 30W non-detergent. the cleaning additives of regular internal combustion motor is not needed.

It is a Walter. Since I was so confused on what oil to put in, I called MMS in Calgary. The service tech told me that they are putting 15w40 in all vdrives. Same Rotella T4 that I put in the engine. I confirmed 5 times and he said “yes” each time. Same oil.

Thoughts on that??

If Walter recommends SAE 30, why would you deviate? I would trust the manufacturer versus a random tech.

Either of the oils you have above are satisfactory.

EDIT: I found some old posts from “engine nut”, sometime after 2012, Walter started to recommend 15W40 in their Vdrives. Sounds like SAE30 or 15W40 are year dependent.

Personally if your year and manual calls on SAE 30, that is what I would use.

Thanks Larry.

I appreciate your looking into this and finding that previous post. Totally makes sense to me to go with the manufacture. To say I was shocked was an understatement. I totally get with newer boats but with my 07, I’ll stick with the SAE 30.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Richard.

Hey Everyone,

I emailed Walters about the oil and they indicated that they recommend "HD SAE 30 (heavy duty SAE 30)" It was great to get the information from the manufacturer for my year and model of boat.

Can you verify the Walters capacity (Indmar manual says .5QT, but I'v also come across 1 QT)?

This is from the manual. Sorry. don’t remember what I put in. It wasn’t very much I remember that.

I checked the oil level on the stick before extracting, and matched it when I filled. Double checked on the water and it was perfect.

Hope this helps.

I warm mine up, remove the vent and suck the old oil out with a vacuum extractor. Never get it all out so fill is usually a little shy of 1 quart. I start with 3/4 quart and add small amounts until it reads full on the dip stick.

Walters v-drive is 1qt. I also contacted them when I did my first change on my 2013 Mojo because the 0.5qt that was printed was wrong, they also recommended SAE 30 over multi-weight oil as recommended above. I ran Royal Purple SAE30 in mine… maybe it was the placebo effect, but I felt like it kept the v-drive more quiet.
