I just bought a 2019 Helix, looking to buy some equipment. I have a good skim-style board, looking for a surf-style board now. Any recommendations would be appreciated, thanks.

I can only speak on the surf style boards I own, and I also still consider myself a beginner.
Phantom - easy for tricks, but feel its better for smaller guys. I have a 200lb friend ride it all the time tho.
Vodoo - nice for bigger guys (fast), but I have a hard time spinning it. I've seen other do it tho. Taylor Black (moomba FB group) does 360s with no problem.
I ride a Matrix, and love it, so keep that in mind lol. I started on a hybrid. I've never cared for a surf style.

My favorite is the p5 swell, similar to the aku but has a flat nose.

I appreciate the suggestions , maybe I can demo some boards, I’ll see if any are available. Lots of people seem to like the phase 5 stuff

Just ordered a 2019 P5 Aku from Evo, sounds like it’s just what I’m looking for thanks for the suggestions. Btw the soulcraft boards look awesome but just bought a boat and a lift and trying to save a little cash.

You’ll love the Aku. It’s so damn fast and turns and carves so easily. It’s my favorite of many boards I have ridden.

I always thought the phantom (just purchased on a whim visiting the dealer for anew actuator) was more like the aku with the nose cut off.... need to check this swell board out before I commit to it.

I tried the Aku last friday it’s so much more buoyant than my skim board I could not get it submerged to get started. I was tired and in cold water so hoping I do better next time.

Use the heel tip method to start. If you are trying to stand on it before you get going, you’re going to have a hard time.

Yes my driver was inexperienced, wasn’t getting the right amount of drag , either too much or none at all.
