Been doing a little garage boating slowly getting her ready for spring. I own a retail furniture store and had to lay off all 10 of my team members, and even though we are technically closed I’ve been working my butt off doing sales by appointment, responding to online inquiries, customer service emails, receiving/unloading furniture and loading customers by appointment. Hopefully I can have the boat water ready in a couple weeks.

Was a very nice afternoon especially since it’s going to drop back into the 40s this weekend. We kept our anchor distance which wasn’t as fun but worked. Water was still a little chilly but got a few runs in.

Did you buy 1/2" or 3/8"?

On the receiver piece (female) for the boat, is the bottom of that solid? If the pin is not attached, it does not have a cover, thus I assume water could enter the receiver piece - where does it go? I was reading where one of these companies made one that would drain into the boat (did not have anything on the bottom). The SC ones have a solid bottom, so the water could not go into the the boat. Nautique looks to have one where they have a piece on that pops up/down, acts like a cover.

I went with the 3/8”. The female receiver comes with a threaded plastic O-ringed plug in the bottom of it if. I took them out since they are mounted about 2’ above the waterline on my boat.

No, no it's not. We live in a macro global economy and current geopolitics are out of our control. Only to be compounded by a massive drop in demand from quarantine measures.

We are looking at a simultaneous demand/supply shock that will not be resolved anytime soon no matter how much the Cheetoe says he's best friends with Saudis.

99 cent gas doesn't do anyone any favors.

American producers cannot sustain current barrel prices.

Unless OPEC finds some balls or the Saudis & Russians stop glutting the market, a whole lot of people in the Oil & Gas industry are gonna lose their jobs.

The Saudis can produce for $7/barrel, this is a zero sum game where they can flood the market until they have put everyone else out of business.

Several smaller American shale producers have already declared bankruptcy.

If oil drops under $20/barrel on the global market, the US is gonna feel a lot of pain.

Amazon is a disrupter and took advantage of a technology shift that changed consumer behavior.

Amazon played a role but so did consumers who realized they could go to a big box store, research, compare, demo and then buy cheaper online.

Technology disruption and commodity manipulation do not have the same drivers or intentions.

I don't think in the early days Amazon intended on purposely putting mom & pops out of business, they just got lucky and rode the wave towards e-commerce.

The current oil crisis started when the Russians decided they weren't gonna follow OPEC and wanted to increase production in a unilateral fashion. Mohammed bin Salman laid the smack down and said, ok, you wanna play? We can play and we can ride out short term losses to win the long game.

I think you're giving Amazon way too much benefit of the doubt, but I own a retail company, so obviously I'm biased. Good points about oil, most of us never think past how nice it feels to fill up cheap. Same way most of us don't think about the fact that it's nice to have cheap retail products produced and sold from overseas companies, but that doesn't do us any favors either.

Mavic 2 Pro...I bought it for a trip last October. We rented a Catamaran in BVI for 7 days. I bought a Hubsan H501S first, and it was ok, but I knew Id be dissapointed if I used it for the trip. So I went all in, and bought the Mavic, and it was worth every penny. The vids are even better than the pics.

Those are beautiful pics. I am looking at getting the Mavic air for this summer. They can be had for 30% off because the Air 2 is coming out. After extensively looking at videos and reviews on youtube, I find the Mini even has better video image than the longer in the tooth Mavic air. That's why I haven't pulled the trigger. Kinda holding off on reviews for the air 2 to come out to see if they upgraded the video quality (sensors, lenses software, etc). I don't want the mini because I want the follow me feature which can be usefull for following a surfer, also want the obstacle avoidance sensors the mini lacks. Really like the Mavic Pro versions but they are more Pro-sumer versions with a bit of higher price I'm willing to spend.

The Air made more sense for traveling, because its so compact, but the 10min battery life made me nervous. You can set the drone to come home at any percentage of low battery, but that doesnt help on a boat. Also, I've found its actually safer to catch the drone, instead of trying to land it on a boat. There is a whole new curve of learning on a boat verse land lol. The Mavic 2 Pro has a 20min battery, and that sealed it for me, since I knew I'd be flying over water 90% of the time. Unfortunately, the ski resorts wont let me fly it there, so I cant use it for snowboarding.

The obstacle avoidance in the Skydio is far and away the best in any drone. Pretty crazy what they can do.The only hold back I have with the skydio is I really want the 3 axis gimbal which DJI holds the crown on, its better for stable cinematic quality footage.
It is amazing what the S2 can do though, maneuvering through tight spaces, avoiding small branches, it has intelligent, almost 360 degree view all around. Crazy tech!
Ahh, just talking about this get me all warm and fuzzy inside, cant wait to get out! One of our local smaller lakes is iced out finally, it'll be surfable in a couple of weeks, although we did get snow again today, projected to get 6 " in Twin cities, rrrg.

I propose we have a separate drone thread. Our beloved sport is so well complemented by hobby cinematography. Having a wakeboat and owning good videography equipment and technique go together like toast and butter. After all, we do this for the memories and we are always striving to grab that perfect image or video of the kids first ropeless surf, or the wifes first wipeout. Good drone videography can be very important tool in our sport.
There is so much to learn about it, how to implement it, bad experiences we can share to help others prevent the same mistakes, such as loosing the drone. I myself am going to be looking at how to make a homemade lightweight polystyrene landing skid in case drone lands in water. There are a lot of crafty guys in this forum that can help trouble shoot. ANd there are so many great drones at different price points to meet your expectations and how much you want to spend. Not everyone has to spend 1000K 4 a drone. I think this would eventually become a usefull resource thread for us.

Thats awesome! We are going to work with our 7yo this year on surfing. Didnt think about not using ballast at first. Did you start her in the water with her heels on the board and pull her up or is there another way? What board did she use?

jph3
04-26-2020, 11:58 AM
Just a kids hyperlite, short rope so it’s a few feet off the deck, drop the speed to 7-8mph... I cheat by standing on the back deck and helping her flip the board when we go into gear *teach them to reach down with one hand and set the board manually... it helps immensely VS dragging them. I can take a video to explain better. My 9yo is up on the turn now - she’s better/easier to pull than the adults :)

She learned it fast and now gets up on her own, but that first couple runs - in my opinion - is 100% about getting them stoked. If they have a bad experience, don’t try it. Bad water, don’t try... You want them to come back and try again!

My point... I watched this guy the other night yelling and frustrated, kid was crying... dad is saying ‘try it again’ when the kid wanted out of the water... guarantee that kid won’t be doing it again soon

Was a very nice evening on the water. He was happy to be the first one to wakeboard behind the new boat and that he got up first try after not boarding last summer due to floods and sold old boat.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200427/c347004c30e6c85b560c82944244d401.jpg

Water was still chilly. But that’s an easy fix. Took me a minute to figure out why I couldn’t drop the rope with her on the board with me, she didn’t get her foot all the way on the board so wetsuit bootie was dragging in the water. Fixed that and I almost took us up on the platform. Ready for more days like this and a little warmer water.

Used this stuff after a quick detailer and ipa wipedown, it has good reviews and was quick and easy to apply and leaves a super slick finish. I’m impressed

Man, that looks really good! Is it supposed to be used for marine use? I used the Hula Silica spray this year and it seemed to do the trick also.

Was a very nice afternoon especially since it’s going to drop back into the 40s this weekend. We kept our anchor distance which wasn’t as fun but worked. Water was still a little chilly but got a few runs in.

Yes that green pops for sure! I like that ladder but looks like you don't get a swing tongue with it. I saw recently on the FB owners group a guy that had some really nice steps made but he wanted like $900 shipped so yea....I'll figure something else out later on. I have a buddy who can weld and doubt he would charge me $900 to build a few steps and plate I can bolt to my swing tongue.

there's much cheaper ladders available out there. have seen this one on a few boats over the last couple of years. looks like you can still keep the swing tongue in some applications. depends on how your swing works and spare position.
https://www.overtons.com/quality-mark-bowstep-3-step-ladder-starboard-with-right-handle-324415.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIr46Ht8mJ6QIVGYnICh1W _AsQEAQYAyABEgJGafD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

some of these floating bathtubs really need one if you have to lean over the boat to winch it. I struggle with our current boat and if we were to ever upgrade a ladder would be a must have.

DNIXD99

I saw the one on FB, but never caught the price. I want something, but havent put any effort into it yet. It will have to look really good tho. Id pay the 900, before I put the one in the link above on my boat/trailer. It might very well work, but its a no for me LOL.

You can order the ladder directly from Boatmate that is color matched.

It's not on the website but if you reach out to them with your trailer VIN they should be able to help you out.

And yes, it won't look like the janky one from Overton's [emoji23]

I've seen those overton ladders in use at a ramp and they are not bad at 1/3 the price of the ones boatmate is building but I get it......
you guys need an angled ladder vs a vertical ladder after too many jello shot cups on the water :razz:

Haha my same thoughts on the handle vs not. We originally were not going to have the handle, slightly cleaner look, but BMate decided we needed it when they built it (mixed up the order). Im very happy they did, makes it very easy for kids to get in and out.

I actually wanted the fixed tongue. I'm lucky enough to have the length in my shop where I don't need the swing tongue. So it actually makes the trailer just a bit shorter not having it vs having, when not folded that is. $900 WOW that's crazy! That's way more than BMate charges. Id get your dealer to call them see if he can order it for you.

I had also found these before https://trickstep.com/#1 Of course if we hadn't ordered it with the trailer, I was going to weld one up myself and order matching paint.

I installed them with the boat on the trailer on flat ground. Used a level for the side to side. The front to back was measured even with the side of the glove box dash. Its not perfect but its close. Got the gauges off amazon.

That’s still sitting in the water results for goofy? You have a bunch of front weight bias or am I reading that wrong?

It looks like that is the walk through and the back of the observers seat. I am reading it as the boat is heavier in the stern and the bow is raised.

This is running 11mph. You are reading it backwards. Its opposite of a typical level bubble. The "bubble" is heavier than the fluid surrounding it.

State Parks not opening for family camping - dang, that is harsh for summer months.

Still trying to understand why 2 family members can go boating in IL but not 4 or 5 family members in a boat. Sure glad I do not live there.

Michigan only allows household family members in the boat. That makes sense, if you live in the same house, being in a boat does not increase your exposure.

Oregon is better off than most states for the virus but the blue states of Washington, Oregon and California basically work together so the worst state drags down the others. Last year, we decided to move from Washington to Table Rock Lake in Missouri for the warmer water, half priced homes and a retirement pension larger than most people's incomes. We will get residency in South Dakota and be a nonresident of Missouri to avoid state income taxes since we will be there less than 6 months. Table Rock Lake has a 1,000 miles of shoreline so finding a cove shouldn't be a problem. I love Texas but I don't care for their lakes and anything east of the Mississippi River will be soon populated with New Yorkers.

Sounds like this might be worth looking into.
