I have a 05 Outback with a Kenwoood CD stereo, not sure of the model ,and I am unable to get to boat till spring.I am wondering if it has an aux jack to plug mp3 player into.If it does it must be on the back of the stereo as there is no jack on the face plate anywhere ,so if anyone knows could you please update me.

There are a number of adapters that plug into the cd changer port. Crutchfield has a few of them. You can either order a mini pluig cable or the dual RCA cable.

I have been trying to decide how to install an ipod in my boat.
I came accross this on Best Buy's site:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7965053&st=Ipod+cable&lp=2&type=product&cp=2&id=1153337431291

Looks like a pretty good option. Provides power and rca input. this would require the Kenwood Aux input. It is $99.00 just another option.

Also, I saw in my local Bass Pro the other day an option in the marine audio section that converts the Ipod mini to RCA. It has a neat mount. I can't find it on Basspro.com . Check a store if you have one near.

Or you could just put an mp3 head unit in. Adapters have never quite lived up to my expectaions, nor do they seem to last very long, and seemed to be prone to getting misplaced or lost

04outback-

The OmniDock - the one from BestBuy - does NOT have a pair of RCA INPUTS - those are OUTPUTS. That is how the audio gets to the system. This requires a head unit with a pair of RCA inputs... were it that simple - then we would not all need adapters! That is more for going to an amp directly.

The PXA05 is a good device that acts like the pair of adapters I reccomend and has the ability to charge. This is an obnvious improvement over the adapters only. We take the ipod off if we ever need too, and then and plug in the cig charger. It had never been a problem, but for those times you go out with low charge, I can see the need to have it.

Peripheral Electronics is a great company.

I personally recommend going wireless with an I-Trip. It plugs onto the I-Pod and sends an FM radio signal to your receiver. You can select amongst many stations to find one that does not have interference in your area. I use it for the boat, the car, when friends have a party and you want to share tunes, traveling, etc. It sells for about 30 bucks.

I currently have a TuneBase FM that plugs in Cig lighter and sends and FM signal. I am looking for a cleaner input into the stereo for better audio. Used it yesterday as a matter of fact...

JoeTechie, thanks for the feedback as well.

I'll figure something out soon before summer gets rollin.

Boatman - you have no idea how bad FM is till you try direct!!!!

I have the adapter installed permanently with RCA's in the glove, All I do is plug in one end of the retractable cable into the rcas and one into the iPod - take it with me when I go. When I started, I had the rca's hanging in behind the pass back rest, and then jsut ran the cable up - it is long enough to leave in the glove and not get in the way.

OK.
I finally settled on a wiring set-up for my boat...

I found a cable on EBay that is made by PAC Mobile Audio (iC-RCA).
It has an Ipod connection for direct input and RCA on the other end. It has a 12V + wire and Ground wire to power the Ipod. I got mine on Ebay but if you Search PAC iC-RCA you'll find several options on the Web.

I plugged this up to my home stereo and was very impressed with sound quality. I hope to put in the Moomba this weekend. I have the Kenwood CA-C1AUX coming in this week and a generic Ipod mount to put on dash.

Definitely better than FM Modulator quality... Had a long road trip yesterday in truck and used Ipod FM... Just not the same when you are used to CD or Satellite quality.

This is the same as the PXA-05, but without the direct to battery connection and rca's and the same as the PAC ic-RCA, but does not need the additional adapter.

1 plug into kenwood, 1 plug into iPod - both audio and power(charging).

looks like a great product... I saw another similar product, but I insist on having the Ipod on the dash with me and I was afraid the cord would not be long enough.
I have run a coat hanger under the walk through and will pull the cables through this weekend. I figured, with the Kenwood adaptor, worst case scenario, I could have an extension for the RCA's....

Have a good weekend.

The PAC iC-RCA worked great this weekend. I am struggling with Ipod mounting options.. I ordered a cheap mount off of ebay... cleaned the metal plate around ignition key and stuck it...let it dry and it fell off driving to lake WITHOUT the ipod in it.. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR...

Anyway, having power for the ipod and a clear direct feed into the kenwood was nice. The iC-RCA has a 12v connection.. I chose to wire direct to what i call a power block... there were some large red / black wires connected to it and there were about a dozen or so empty screws available (meter showed power..) Other than risk of drawing unwanted current, does anyone see a problem with wiring there?

I may switch the 12v connection to an open switch later...

anyway, I was pleased with audio quality of the PAC iC-RCA ..

Great find Joe. It doesn't say how long the cable is, hope it's long enough to make it over to the driver's side dash. I'll be getting one.

Thanks again.

Before I order one, does anyone know for sure if this cable is long enough to go from the head unit, under the floor, and up to the driver's side dash on a 2006 LSV?

Thanks,

Al

Probably not. But I think one of the discussed companies makes a DIN Extension.

FYI, I called PIE and asked them how long the Kenwood adapter was and they told me it was 6ft. Do you guys think this is long enough for to wrap around to the driver side for a mount?

Great find Joe!

I don't think 6' is long enough if you are wiring to the drivers side dash somewhere around the steering wheel. I did not get this exact cord that you did, but mine is 6' and was not long enough to make it on my Outback. Yours may be different.

I ended up buying the cable and and (2) extensions so I could run it from the radio all the way over to the driver's side. The extension cable (Kenwood CA-C2EX) was from Crutchfield.

Here are two pics of the mount I used. The mount is from Crutchfield also.

I didnt know they made an extension cable. I had the same cable going from back of radio to glovebox.. I took out the CD changer (Actually.. if anyone wants a 12 disk kenwood changer it is for sale CHEAP.. but this isnt the forum for that PM me if interested)
anyways.. I put the cable thru a hole I made bigger in the bottom of the glovebox, but I hated having to either A.. open and close the GB to get to the Ipod.. or B leave the I pod dangleing outside the glove box near the windshield hoping it stayed there.
I just ordered 2 extensions and a mount for the same setup as above. Thanks for the excellent post.. - BTW.. does it stay on in rough water?... or did u have to screw it to the dash?.

Here's a little known tip on the Moombas, don't know if it applies to all or not but it did on my '07 LSV. It is super easy to run the cable from port to starboard without going around the bow. Most will say "yeah right!", but it is.

Open your front ballast/ski locker, push the bag down out of the way, stick your head in there and look towards the helm. You'll be able to see clear into the drivers footrest all the way to where the wires exit. It's a nice big hole. Now look towards the storage/battery locker. You'll see a lot smaller hole where the wires exit. This hole is the same hole your battery wires come out of. Now look forward in the ballast locker, theres a length of PVC pipe glassed under the floor to run wires through.

If you use a coat hanger, wire pull or something like it and starting at the drivers footrest you can easily run it through the footrest to the locker then run it through the PVC and into the smaller hole on the otherside into the storage compartment. It took me all of ten minutes to do that and it's a heck of a lot easier than going around the bow!

Does anyone use an iphone while on the water? What connection are you using to the factory radio? I have the set up above (a few posts back in this thread) and it works great for my ipod, but it's not compatible with the iphone. I'd like to be able to plug it in on occasion and stream a Pandora station or something. Any suggestions?

I use my Iphone for my MP3 player. I got a 6 ft cable from the local Target. Was like 15 bucks.

I don't recall the maker of it but on the package it sat specifically for the IPhone because it has that deep set head jack on it.

Just make sure you dont turn the Iphone over 80% volume or you get some feedback in your speakers as the Iphone amp is over working its self.

MMandley - I assume your boat has a newer radio that has an auxiliary jack, correct? Mine is hooked up via the changer port on the back - it has no input for the "headphone" style jack. I'm looking for an iphone adaptor that will connect this way, I think. Unless anyone has another way.

Maybe I should just get an '09 LSV....I can tell the wife it's the only way to listen to the latest technology. Should be an easy sell.....:)

Im not positive without going and pulling a wire out but i fished mine threw the access hole for the starter cables to the batter, threw the ski locker to the drivers side and i think its 6ft but id get a 9 ft cable to be sure.

Thats the best i can estimate without pulling a new line threw there again and measuring it.

8' beam, plus 1' (2' total)up either side of the ski locker to the cross pipe, plus 3' extra to the stereo to tuck in ... get a 12-15' and hide the rest in the footwell cavity.

Not sure if this is what y'all are looking for, but I have a 4th gen Nano, and it wouldn't work in my boat until I got this passport adapter. It says it works for iPhone, and iPod Touch, but I don't have either of those, so can't really vouch for them. I believe my nano would play through the aux cable, but it wouldn't charge, and this fixes that.

I'm not at the lake right now, but I got an adapter that goes between my nano 4th gen and the traditional cable. Works perfect, now charges as it plays. There was another thread on this I think under modifications that addressed this issue.
