Hi everyone first post. I currently own a 2017 AR195 yamaha that I love but it just can't put out a proper wake. Well I was demoing a few new boards with the doomswell crew on my boat which my mom and dad happened to be with me. Well mom fell in love with wakesurfing and vowed to do it once she recovered from her knee surgery. We had a bday party for her at my house Sunday where she told us how cool it was watching me surf. So I said in jest dad we should split a boat. Well he was having his new Porsche wrapped in clear protectant and needed a ride. I said you know the moomba dealer is in the way we should go peep the new 2019 Max. So we went and looked at 3 boats. First was the Max. Which we liked but he didn't like having to have more ballast than factory and losing storage space. He did however like the size and the styling. So I'm thinking holy shit I'm gonna get a Max. Next was the Axis A22. Honestly neither of us were impressed. Didn't like.that boat at all for $92k other than the wake. Which I know to be really good. We were very lucky with the next boat which was a customers that was coming.to pick it up tomorrow morning. The 2019 makai. That boat is giant gorgeous and did I mention giant. Well after a few hours of deliberating we are going to get the makai. I just don't know what color to get. He likes the yellow for the bow sandwiched in white. We both like the brown interior. I like the all light blue with the light sparkly blue. But I love the all white with the brown interior. Has anyone seen the yellow. If so can you please post a picture so I can see the actual color. My dealer didn't have one with that colourway. I was so impressed with the interior of the Makai. It felt like a bug step up from the Max and a giant leap from the A22. And it has 4000 lb of factory ballast. Plus at 24 ft going in the puget sound will be a breeze.

Pics do not help Yellow unless you have a high resolution picture.

There is a yellow Supra around here. Pics do not do it justice. It looks a lot different in person and in the sun. The yellow really stands out / pops.

If you like Yelllow . . . .

I love the yellow, my wife had other ideas. She said anything but yellow, orange or Seahawks colors. So we came up with this.

Judging by all the comments on Facebook the makai will have the same issue as the max in regards to stock ballast not being enough, the extra 1k is probably equivalent to the max because of the Extra 2 feet in length.

I noticed on your build you have the 450 engine with the 15x13 prop. You may want to select the 15.5x15.25 prop (or whatever it is) with the 450 since the 450 comes with a 1.76:1 drive ration in the transmission. That 15x13 will have your engine speed very high and limit your top speed I would imagine.

Hit up Corey at Evolution Covers and see what his lead time is. He is usually a few months out but if you can wait he can make you a sweet trailerable cover for the same money as the factory. The factory cover is great but people say it will scuff your gel coat if you trailer with it.

Probably plenty. Stock waves are for sure surfable and wake is great

I’ve found the need for more is a bit overblown. Sure more is better, but stock our Craz surfed great and wave was huge

Yep. I agree. I have stock ballast in my Craz, but added 300lbs of lead wake mainly to shift around when I have a small crew. My wave is sweet and have zero issues with it. Personally I think it is more about dialing in the autowake with the proper wake plate positions and pitch and roll. Fully understand those and get it dialed in first. After that, additional lead weight can be used to fine tune it.

Well dealer today had to make a change. Apparently the build slot was already slotted for a 400 and can't be changed to a 450. So I could either wait till fall for a 2020 or go with the 400. I asked him his honest opinion. Even gave the option of keeping my trade in all summer to wait for the 450. We boat at about 200-300 ft above sea level so altitude isn't an issue. We normally have a smaller crew. I don't wakeboard and won't ever wakeboard. It's all about cruising and surfing. He Def felt like I wouldn't be missing the 450 vs the 400 with our use of the boat. He had the option of charging me more and keeping my trade all summer so the hours don't change. He still felt it the right choice to choose the 400. They have a great reputation of being an outstanding dealer. He also owned a water sports company in FL for 7 years so I do trust his judgement. So we are going to go with the 400. I'll let everyone know how she does.

Man that is a bummer but it is tough to get things changed inside of 30 days before the build. When we did ours we were told we had to lock everything in before a certain date and it was right about 30 days out.

The 440 was a remapped 400, identical engine internals. In 2018, the 440 was a $7000+ option and was only 23 ft lbs of torque difference. Not worth the money.

The 450/460 may also be identical internals with a 91octane tune, but does come with a lower geared trans.

You cannot remap the Indmar ECM’s and cannot buy them either.

Ya the 450 is a 460 just with a smaller diameter exhaust. They are all obviously the same block but the 450 & 460 have different heads, different tune ect..... from those on the 400 & 440. The 1.76 trans in the 450 is a big difference as well and also allows a larger prop.

Is there any performance differences in the 450/460 due to the smaller exhaust? And if so, why put a smaller exhaust in and generate two different engines?

It’s some very small torque and hp difference. Like small single digits on each.

I would guess engine compartment space concerns?

Just to throw this out there. I demo'd a 2018 Max last fall that the dealer had been using for surf nights. It had an extra 2150# over the factory 3000# with the 400. It had the surf prop on it, and had no issue at all 500ft elevation surf speeds. I took it up to 23mph just to see what the wake would look like at that speed and weight. While it was only a demo, the 400 seemed perfectly fine to me and that's how he had it set up for the surf nights. Now the Makai has 1000# extra stock ballast and is 700# heavier dry than the Max. Correct prop with any of them is always important.

They don’t even dyno test/rate the engines in the boat, so exhaust and driveline losses are not accounted for.

10,700# is a chunk of weight no doubt but the Makai is rated for 11,700# and is 2ft longer than an SA. It needs more weight.

Having demoed the Makai twice before purchasing I will say this 400 will do most anything you need at sea level within the 11,700#. How do I know? I made the dealer load it up and we had it at 11,500# with the 400 and the "wake prop".... that being said it definitely has work harder to do it than the 450 no doubt. Now the Makai is 24.5' with a 102" beam, the same as the SE yet weighs 950# less, get where I am going with this?

In the end only you know how you will truly use the boat and you have to be happy with your purchase and how you spec it, that is all that really matters. I am just saying make sure you get what you want.

I think 1.76 may be in the future for more motors, but could be yet to come.

I have a 450 and use all of its available snort. A 400 would not work for me, but my loads are pure insanity by some standards. Unfortunately my scale is skewed by friends with slammed SLs and MC X24s. BASTARDS!

I know a lot of Makais have 400s. And there are tons of happy Makai owners, so it must be doing the trick for most.

So I think 2020 is supposed to be the first year for the 400 to come with the 1.5:1 drive train. The prop selection on the 2019 boat builder is still showing options for the 1:1 like what I am pretty sure I have. I wonder how the 1.5:1 will improve performance with the 400.

And while the 400 can pull the weight with the right prop, that prop may have you turned in excess of 4,000 rpm while at wakeboard speeds which is not a good idea IMO. That is where the added power of the other engine comes in handy.

I will NEVER wakeboard with the Makai. We will only use it for cruising, and surfing. Normal crew is about 4-6 with two fo those being 4 and 6 year olds. We boat at about 250 ft above sea level. I will have about 1000lb of lead I can use. So fasted we will go fully loaded would be about 11 mph. When cruising obv all the ballast would be drained. Only have one friend who surfs who is over 200 lbs. Most of my friends are in the 150 lb range. Little fuckers.

I think you’d be fine with the 400 given your intended use and crew size. My Max is rated at 4500 lbs dry weight to the Makai’s 5200 lbs. I had 13 people on my Max and just making things simple that’s an average of 164 lbs per person based off the capacity rating. Given the Makai weighs more I subtract 4 people from the 13 I had to equate to roughly the same weight. I had no issues getting on plane. Granted I did not have the rear ballast full and was running 75% front ballast, but the engine handled it at sea level just fine. Do they have a Makai there with a 400 that you can demo with your lead and approximate crew size? That’s really the best and only way you’ll know if it’s ok for you. Personally I think you’d be fine but of course more is better if you feel you need it.

In reality that was an option. Until I saw you live in like N. Dakota. Plus I'd have to sell my boat private party. If you wanna drive the makai to WA we could have a chat lol.

Dude! Tons and tons of guys haul boats for $1 a mile. I have never actually bought one within 500 miles.

Depends solely on the prop. It allows swinging a bigger and longer prop. My Makai goes 40 but I never go that fast.

Still doesn't solve my current boat situation. Plus adding the cost to ship and it being even slightly used at $93k is more than the new Makai now for me. He's dropping it to $92k. Also I need a galvanized trailer. I am also adding the rear back up camera and electronic brakes. Well I'm trying to. But your boat is very fucking tempting.

Just for the sake of accuracy: I am at $91,500. Free $1000 bags, $6000 450 motor and 1.76, $650 16” prop and several stupid little mods done that the boat needs from the factory but doesn’t have.

It’s all good! I was just funnin’ anyway, well kinda. [emoji16]

I am also adding the rear back up camera and electronic brakes. Well I'm trying to. I would be surprised if they can make this happen in your time frame. Typically the trailer is built well before the build date. But with them having to get make you a galvanized trailer it might be. I would just figure if they couldn't change the motor everything else would be tough too.

Spray date 6/27 completion date 7/8. I wanted to visit the factory but i'll be on vacation most of this time and just can't find the time sadly. My dealer thinks I could be on the water 7/15. First service is scheduled for 8/5. So excited. Just in time for boat races.

She starts today, wooohooo. If i have issues with the 1.5 tranny I'll likely trade her in in 2 years for a supra SE. If i have no issues we will keep this boat a long time. I am so excited right now. Coming from a jet boat wake that you couldn't really surf on at all and being 19.5 ft we didn't have much room when more than 4 adults and my kids were aboard.

Got to the dealer today with a fucked up prop. Dealer is replacing it and hopefully we get her tomorrow. At least my dealer pits it in the water and makes sure she's correct before I even take it on the water with them.

Prop was fucked. Dealer won't let us take her till it's perfect. It wasn't my choice either, but I only own half the boat. My pops wanted much more yellow than he got. But I actually like the yellow it's pretty standout ish.

My father in law is picking our Makai up from the dealership tomorrow. Super excited as well. Looks like we will be learning the in and outs at the same time.

I plan on staying up after everyone has gone to sleep to power through the break-in period. I think one night plus one morning and I will knock out those 10 hours pretty quickly then be ready to weight it.

Any plans for your maiden voyage?

I'm going to Lake Stevens about 10 min from my house to knock out the 10 hours. Then we will be surfing the rest of the week till Saturday. The weekend will be spent on Lake Whatcom.

Idk why the prop wasn't right. I do know it was a 950 not a 945. SC is now shipping makai with the 950 since the cup is a bit stiffer than the 945. Well to get the 950 warrantied was going to take a few days so they grabbed a 945 off a new Max and put it on my Makai. She ran great in their tests last night. So I'm going to get her today at noon. I ordered a 950 for my backup prop.
