I picked this up in Quebec a few weeks ago, it was a hike but i got a deal on it. Bought it from the original owner who just turned 80 so it was pretty lightly used. Runs great, low hours, clean boat ect. The modifications have begun and i cant stop haha i put a big air cuda tower on it and spent all weekend buffing it and it turned out really nice, just ordered 8, 6.5in polk marine speakers, a rockville 1600w 4 channel amp, 4 rockville tower enclosures and a 10in polk sub, gonna tear up all that nasty carpet and replace it with teak hydroturf next weekend. So yea im pretty excited, i better buff up the seadoo and sell it now. Cant wait to go wakeboarding, ive been doing it behind a jetski or my buddies cigarette boat for the past few years so im thinking itll be a lot more fun now once i throw some ballast in there.

I wanted to ask what you guys what your favorite or essential mods are? I was thinking about an EFI kit but it seems like the general consensus is dont do it unless you have to replace your carb anyway.

Also do you have any maintenance or just general tips for owning an old direct drive?

Thanks heres some pics.

Love it man! I picked up a 1999 Outback myself last year and buffed the hell out of it to get that mirror finish. Take lots of pictures and updates on the carpet job, because I'm looking to do the same thing!

I sold my 98 last year for the same price I bought it in 2002. If you have the wax cord in the shaft stuffing box replace it with the Teflon or graphite cord when it needs replaced. A working bilge pump is a plus. If you have Airguide speedos, they haven't been made since 2002 so you need to have a spare if you come across one. The pitot replacements are at Skidim. If the tach reads high then tap on the bezel and that usually fixes it. The numbers on the carburetor doesn't match up with anything Holley has but their is a cross reference to get you the right kit. The older mechanics know the routine.

The most important is to run the hell out of the boat and bow wave the guests when they least expect it.

Its finally time to start working on the boat again and i never new about the bow wave until i drove it a bit, i did a lot of work on it last year but it feels like i havent even put a dent in all the things i wanna do. I never got around the the hydro turf last year but i did cut the piece for the swim platform. It feels like i could work on this thing all summer and still not finish everything that i want to do because everything is a learning experience, but i did make a sweet power distribution set up last year and the stereo turned out really nice. I added an auxiliary battery then i got a bunch of aluminum excursion from work and built a holder for my batteries and bolted that to the floor and then i had two pieces coming out the back with an aluminum plate and i got a power distribution block from work and one of those distribution switches from princess auto so i can swith between the batteries or disconnect them from power because for some reason my batteries kept draining. Now i gotta clean up all my messy speaker wiring because i did it in one morning before i took it out for thr first time.
