View Full Version : Adding bow steps?

Anyone added bow steps to the trailer? Is there a manufacturer or is this a custom job?

I think you can order them from boatmate if you call them I’ve looked into it a little bit . On the newer trailers it is bolted down so wouldn’t be hard to do you just have to make sure to move all the lines that run through the trailer so you don’t drill into them.

I was looking into and found this:

http://dtsinnovations.com/product/d-step-recreation/

I haven’t pulled the trigger yet so can’t vouch for them, but a couple steps sure would make it easier on the occasion I launch by myself.

z- that looks like a nice kit for the coin. powedercoat it to match for a few bux and off to the races..

I have looked into something like that for mine as I agree with you on launching or winching myself but I think it'll render the swing tongue useless if I put it on my boatmate. swing is the dimension we were shopping for in a garage as boat is 26ft and if you extend the tongue it's 28. 28 is almost impossible to find in a garage.

I like the setup of those steps. Ideally id like to have a hand rail as well. Ive got access to a metal shop. It seems like it would be easy enough to Fab up

That's more along the line of what I'm looking for. I assume the steps are a universal fit?

Looks like they have a model for folding tongue trailers, but I doubt you’d be able to keep the handrail on it.

I tried to order one from boatmate but the trailers with the bow step setup have about a 24" extended tongue where the ladder mounts.
I plan to fab one for my trailer but haven't planned it out yet.

Boatmates looks really nice for $300 and I didn't get the foldable Tongue so I was hoping there might be enough room to fab one up

SONIC

Should be.
It's just a piece of 2x3 rectangle tube with plates welded on it's pretty simple.
If you can grab it from boatmate for 300 already painted with decking I say do it

I don't have a hinged tongue and the boatmate ladder would not work on my trailer either. I have spent way too much time trying to figure out a good ladder to board with since I don't have access to a dock half the time. Both these are expensive but I am looking at these two options.

https://parts.coyotemfgco.com/products/bow-ladder-handrail

https://www.salestrailers.com.au/product/boat-trailer-ladder/

I like the 4 step easy step but I just don't like how it mounts with that large plates sticking out the side. I can see catching that with a knee or something. Maybe I can trim it.

Finally got some bow steps that I like and fit perfectly on the trailer for the Max. Very sturdy and really happy with the way they turned out. It is perfect height and the step and handrail is about 8" away from boat bow so no chance of it hitting.

I am going to replace the grip tape with gator step and maybe paint it silver but I don't think the black looks too bad.

It is the Easy Step 3.0. It is not on the website yet, you have to call up there and order it. I was going to order there 4 step bow steps but he told me about these and I am glad I went for it.

How much did that set you back?It was $339 with the handle. He does sell it without the hand rail for less. I think he said $300 but don't quote me on that.

Really thinking about it, without the handrail it would encourage everyone to sit on the bow and scoot in vs standing up and walking across the cushions. The handle is removable. They are also working on an add-on step that would go below the tongue to help with the first step.

The other thing that is sort of cool is it pretty customizable. I had the handrail on the right side to begin with but I felt it would get in the way when using the winch. You can also angle the steps to go towards either side.

That step looks good. I'd just do something about the extra threads sticking up above the nuts on the U-bolts. Cut them off just above the nuts and grind them down so they have a nice blunt top to them. Not something I would want to step on with my bare feet. Then put some gator or something on the trailer tongue in front of the step. You'd be set then.

I actually have to change out the top nuts for lock nuts and bigger washers and then I will cut them off.

I’m going to order one of these. Does adding ladder this mean I will need to be more careful with angles when backing up or turning around? How easy is the handrail to remove?

htfit
04-14-2021, 10:41 PM
The handrail is very easy to remove. It is just 4 bolts.

It won't interfere with towing or backing up angles. I dont think it would be possible to hit it without jack knifing the trailer.

It may actually make backing up easier with no boat on it because you have another reference point sticking up you can see from the truck.

The only thing additional you may need to order is longer ubolts.

They come with 4" bolts and my trailer tongue is a little over 5" in height where it attached.

https://www.amazon.com/uxcell-Square-U-Bolts-Length-Washers/dp/B08LD1SQ22/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=uxcell+square+u+bolts+90mm+180mm&qid=1618454304&sr=8-3

I also did pick up some split lock washers and bigger washers from home depot. And I did cut off the extra length like mentioned before which it looks way nicer.

Good info and thanks! This is going to make my life SO much easier at the ramp now, not to mention safer. Almost broke my leg last year slipping off the box of the Max and my leg landed awkward between the frame.

interesting that the trailer isn't a swing tongue. wonder how it would install with that? I'd love to have a set but not sure it would mount up with the swing.

that bottom pic is a long tongue and I see how it works on there. most wakeboats today are more like the mb in the first pic.
I'd question whether or not that tongue can swing with the grab bar installed and interesting that it only has one of the ubolts installed. wonder if they have to remove it often or it interferes with some of the trailer mechanicals.

went out and checked mine out and don't believe it will fit. my nose hangs over the swing part and is lower on the trailer than the mb in the pic. tongue isn't long enough to mount the stairs and not have them hit the nose of the boat. maybe a 2 step but not 3.

I have swing tongue and it’s long like sandm is saying. That’s why I had asked if it might interfere but I see you don’t have the folding tongue. It’s not a deal break for me if it would interfere with my folding tongue because we no longer require folding it for storage.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkI ordered and tried to get the boatmate steps but they would not fit on my trailer. The guys at boatmate told me the trailers are usually built to spec to be able to have the steps but my trailer could just be weird where they wouldn't fit.

The Boatmate trailers I have seen with steps have the long folding tongue.

My 2018 had the long folding tongue, my 2021 has the short folding tongue.

I am not sure the advantage/disadvantage to the tongue length yet in general, but I don’t see steps fitting on a shorty.

I do remember the long folding tongues sagged at the hinge no matter how tight the bolt was.

Looks like two through bolts to me. If it doesn't swing well and that matters to you, you could use quick release pins instead of bolts and remove the whole thing.

SONIC
05-20-2021, 08:53 AM
Yeah I'm going to use 4 3/8 bolts to hold it on. I'll drill and tap the bottom edge of the trailer.
It will still swing but I don't think all the way. I don't need the folding tongue anyway so it's not an issue for me. Quick release pins would work though if you wanted to fold it.

Justin,

How much clearance do you have between the bow and the 3rd step? Do you have any concerns about powering on to the trailer and the bow guide flex or bow hitting the 3rd step?

A 2 step option might make the tongue fold angle achievable and still be functional.

I always admire your work and wish I had the tools to do what you do.

I've got about 6" or so to the bow, I don't think there's any way the boat could hit the step as the winch and roller are well braced.
I think if you hit it hard enough to hit the step you'd have much bigger problems than that scrape haha.
It may be different for different boat but the shape of the SA doesn't really allow it to go over the roller like a longer v hull might.
