Ceramic coating done on the Craz! Even though it only had 9 hours on it the polish really fixed some issues that dealer prep didn’t catch. Looks mint now!

Does everyone use transom straps when towing? Seems like it would put alot of stress on the platform. I'm assuming bc of the wake plates that there is not another tie down option?

was thinking the same thing on this install. the way those transom straps are installed- and I'm no physics dude but do remember a tad bit from school- that mounting point on the platform looks like it would add a lot of stresses to the swim platform mounts on the hull of the boat from the distance out.

kinda get a feeling with all the crap they add to the transoms of these new surf boats(and skiers is def. not the only one) that the transom straps are becoming more of an afterthought. my current boat is the same way.

Transom straps work great, cinch them down just enough to take slack out.

Easy peasy.

agreed, it's the location on the platform that is the question. most transom straps I have seen/used hook to the lifting eyes as that's what they are designed/engineered for. all the surf stuffs hanging on the back of the boats is making that increasingly difficult and wonder if the swim platform brackets have been engineered to withstand the forces needed.

The platform is designed to take 300# with safety factor, I don’t see exceeding that with straps unless you over ratchet them.

My concern would be a pot hole that causes the boat to bounce. I also don't know the physics numbers so there may be more force at a different point on the trailer and the transom straps are fine attached to the platform.

You don't have to cinch them down super tight. Just snug so that the rear of the boat doesn't bounce if you do hit a pot hole or have to make an evasive maneuver. I'd rather have my swim platform take any damage than let my hull bounce around on the bunks.

After taking the tour of the plant this week and seeing the material that is used under the swim platform I have no worries. The transom is also heavily reinforced where anything mounts to it.

When cinched down, the boat and trailer become one and bounce together.

300#? That’s it’s??? We’ve had 3-4 adults standing on ours at once at around 600# at least. At the dealer we had enough people on the platform to cause the tongue jack to bounce

Home stretch!

No I opted for the factory installed unit, and it is super easy to use. The standard sliding bench seat is awesome just to be able to get easy access to the strainer and vdrive.

I wondered the same thing but like Hack said, when you take the tour you see that everything screwed into the hull has full, self-healing backers. Anchors are backed for tower, cleats, handles, tracking fins, transom platform mounts, etc. Not even Nautique can say that, there is a rebuild video floating around where it shows the tower anchors on a 210 are just through-bolted.

I also think the transom straps are more of a stability thing than an actual anchor. My guess is they just serve to keep the stern centered. If you think about it it seems like the vast majority of the boaboats weight will always be resting on the bunks, something has to really be going wrong (ie boat is lifting off the trailer) for a substantial amount of weight to be put on the straps. At the end of the day, my dealer installed the straps and told me where to mount them, if something goes wrong in normal use it will be on them I guess.

Ever seen a boat on trailer (less transom straps) hit an unexpected speed bump or curb? Boat and trailer go up, trailer comes down, boat comes down a little off center. Driver about shits his pants. I was behind a guy in a big department store parking lot headed toward the gas pumps and watched this take place in front of me with about a 20ft Bayliner when they cut the corner and hopped a curb. Boat jumped over a good 6-8".

That was on a single axle. I'm guessing it may have been a little different with a tandem.

Go to the hardware store and buy different bolts and nylock nuts.

The locking hardware that comes with these are defective.

They thread about 3 turns and I broke the bolt trying for the 4th turn.

BoatBuckle G2 Stainless Steel Retractable Transom Tie-Down (Black), 1 Pair https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001GJ35VU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_GayZCbYBA8658

Probably made by same company.

I have the Boat Buckles G2 straps. The stainless steel hardware isn't defective, but rather will begin galling if you install the bolt and nut too fast. This is common with SS fasteners. The key is to go slow on the install and use a lubricant to help prevent galling. https://www.boltdepot.com/fastener-information/Materials-and-Grades/Thread-galling.aspx

I may swap them out so I don't have to fight them for the 3rd time. Aside from the fastener issues I love my Boat Buckles!! Quick and easy at the marina.

I've not used Never Seize before but it would likely help.

From the article I linked earlier:

Use a Lubricant
Special anti-seizing or anti-galling lubricants can be used to dramatically reduce the chance of galling. Examples include MRO Solutions 1000 Antiseize, Permatex® Anti-Seize Lubricant, Finish Line™ Anti-Seize Assembly Lube and USS Ultra Tef-Gel®.

Even a standard lubricant, such as WD-40®, can help reduce friction and prevent galling. Some nuts are available with a waxed finish to reduce the risk of galling.

Why Fasteners Gall
Why Are Stainless Bolts Prone to Galling?
Stainless, aluminum, and titanium fasteners form thin protective oxide films on their exposed surfaces that prevent corrosion. In addition, this coating reduces friction and prevents direct metal to metal contact during fastening.

The protective oxide film can be rubbed or scraped off under the pressure and movement of the fastener being tightened. When this happens these relatively soft metals come into direct contact. Friction increases and the chance of galling increases significantly.

What Is Actually Happening?
Thread surfaces have microscopic high points that can rub together during fastening. In most cases this does not present a problem as the points slide over each other without damage.

Under certain conditions however, the surfaces will not slide past each other. The high points will then shear and lock together, greatly increasing friction and heat. As tightening continues the increased pressure results in more material being sheared off the threads. This cycle continues with even more shearing and locking until the threads are destroyed and the fastener will no longer turn in either direction.

I denied the forecast and got out on Lake Cumberland in KY Sunday. At 3pm I was seriously doubting myself (56 and almost drizzling) but put the boat in the water anyway. By 5, the sun was out and I was in the water! 71 degree water and 71 degree air, summer has started! For any other Cumberland boaters, I can say that the water is in better shape than I have ever seen it in May (or June or July, better than last August!) thanks to the flooding this year! It's still up 5' or so, but it's looking like a great summer!

I thought I had a problem with ballast pumps. the manual says to change impellers at 100 hours, so I bought a set this winter. When i took the first one out it looked good as new so I put it back in and didn't look at any others. When i filled up for this ride, the pumps stopped WAY before my bags were full. I cycled the pumps like 3 or 4 more times to top it off. I realized in the shower this morning that i bet i lost my timer setttings when i took the batteries out this winter. That only makes a little bit of sense though... you don't loose settings when you turn the batteries off at the switch... I guess I need to check settings and probably replace impellers. I had to bleed a lot of air too.

I live at 7,400' of elevation. We are 8 - 10 degrees cooler than Denver on a daily basis.. On the positive side, it never gets above 90 at my house. I'll be thinking of you in July and August when it's 85 and 10% humidity!

The weather in the PNW's been amazing. Went out for a Sunday-Funday downtown Portland on Cinco de Mayo.

The wife got in her first surf of the season.

Then we celebrated a little as we broke a lot of people's boating "rules".

then we met some friends, and decided to tie up for a bit and hosted the music.

Epic Saturday in Portland. Record highs of 90 degrees! We launched at 830am and had some fun before most people got out... I got in my first ski and my first wakeboard of the season. Hooked up a new guy with a day on the water. It's always a blast to have someone that makes me look like a beginner. The XLV put out a meaty wake with about 2700 pounds of ballast.

https://i.imgur.com/IuBQl7U.jpg

The wifey was happy to transition from drysuit to wetsuit. (63 degree water now).
https://i.imgur.com/jEh1F6W.jpg

Docked up the Boat and walked to lunch at Portland Sports Bar & Grill. Good food and drinks on the patio and adding more people to the crew for the day.
https://i.imgur.com/nWZKjMf.jpg

we ended up rocking 10 boards + my ski for the day.

https://i.imgur.com/wvsqy9b.jpg

After some more surfing and wakeboarding with a crazy amount of boats in downtown Portland, I took a foil set and then we met up with friends and went to the party cove. Tieup, music and even some BBQ off the buddy's 26' SeaRay cuddy was great. Unfortunately for him, there was a TON of debris in the Willamette Rvier and he hit a submerged log and it destroyed his outdrive. I was already out of the water and driving home when this happened. They had to call 911 and the fire department boat came out and got the women/kids off his boat and was pumping water to keep it afloat. (a big hole where the outdrive was would overpower 4+ normal bilge pumps!!!)

https://i.imgur.com/39FHfRW.jpg

They kept a afloat until they would get his truck and trailer brought out from over an hour away. Now insurance and repairs...

Found a fun activity for the littles on the lake when looking for a small break. Small remote controlled jet boats to play boat tag on the lake.....one way to start honing hand eye coordination as future first mates. Also, a testament to the amount of storage on the Max that you end up storing lots of random crap on board :)

Enjoy the water tomorrow! Especially since Sunday I am guessing the storm hitting us Texan's tonight/tomorrow will be on your doorstep come Sunday. Fingers crossed the wind is at bay....the Max's freeboard makes for one heck of a sailboat in 20 mph wind :)

The boats aren't super fast for an adult, but plenty for the kids. Doesn't hurt (pun intended) that they are prop-less as well. I bought them at a local hobby shop, but here they are at hobby town, amazon. Pro Boat Jet Jam 12 inch Pool Racer RTR

We've all been there. on both sides of the line. Of course, my boat insurance covers towing with no deductible. Hate to say it's easier often to take a pull from a fellow boater than wait for the towing boat to arrive.

There's a private road just up the street from me. I've been plowing it the last 3 years @ $125 each time I plow. I made $2,000 this year, so that also softens the blow. Matter of fact, the plowing is paying for all the work I've done to my 98 Mobius so far this year. I work from home so I have some flexibility with plowing. I don't do driveways other than my own.

Next week it will do a 180 and you will be talking about flooding and 80s.

$2k/year will be some good spending $$ for the boat or accessories.

Out of curiosity, is your sub in open air? If so, is it designed for it? I don’t what the set up is on the Makai, but i built a box to enclose my Kicker sub in my craz over the winter. Holly Sh*t did that make a difference! I actually need to back down the gain on the amp because it is rattling everything in the boat. I will never understand why they put a sub in free air that isn’t designed for it. It wouldn’t take anything for them to enclose it in the factory.

Yea it was super cool being in there. Wish I could post all the videos!
And yes the Makai is free air. It’s a little tight back there, but you could potentially seal a box to the wall. I didn’t pay too much attention to it back there other than seeing you’d need to move a ballast line and wiring harness over a few inches. But the doghouse has so much room for a couple 10’s or a nasty 12”. It’s begging for it!

Ya I am going to take some measurements of the dog house this weekend to see what we can make happen. I am also going to look at the back side of the free air to see if I could seal it with a box as well

Took a newbie from never having done wakeboard or wakesurf from getting up, to line riding to a long freeride in the span of about 15 minutes. Man, I wish I would have had my wave, my boards, and my coaching when I was a newbie...

Raced back into dark clouds and missed the rain and ended up with a sunset.

I have 1100’s in the back and the extra bow bag too. Then I have 500lb of lead bags split evenly on both sides. 150 in the middle and 100 at the back of the bow bag, both sides.

When we have a couples guys only surfing, (small crew) I also have a couple of 400lb bags - one across the back seat and one on the surf side which we switch depending on which side we surf. If I could just go with another 500lb of lead I would but I think it’s too much for lift.

2) What type of weight are you running exactly and how much do you have to list the max for optimal?

Thanks!

Thank you sir!

1) everyone in my crew rides regular so I’m not sure how the goofy wave looks. I’m sure it’s great but I’ll flip the switch and post some pics next time out.

2) I’m running the stock subfloor bow bag with another 300lbs of lead, stock rears with 720’s piggybacked under mid ship side seats with another 100 lbs of lead under the rear bench (So around 4800lbs total). It doesn’t need much list for a good regular side wave, maybe a few hundred lbs bias (one or two people).

Yesterday I met up with a coworker who wanted to check out the boat on the water. Next thing I know he invited like his whole family for the ride. With my crew plus his I ended up with 13 people on the boat. I have the 400 and it didn’t have much of an issue with the weight. I wished I would have snapped a pic of the rooster tail that thing was kicking out while getting on plane lol. It was pretty nuts looking! I also flipped on the surf tab to see what it would look like with no ballast and that amount of people and the wave was plenty meaty over stock!! One of the rare times I left my MicroSD card in the truck :(. I have 1 hour left on my break-in and can’t wait to get it over with so I can’t actually play around with surf settings to see what works and what doesn’t. It’s amazing how much room the Max has. Even with 13 people on board there was room to spare for another 2-3 people. I had 6 people in the bow alone :D.

Yes it’s the base motor with the factory “wakeboard” prop. Runs around 3600 rpm at 10.8-11mph if I recall

On the way back Sunday, we were pretty close to the launch and there were a couple guys on waverunners standing on a barge waving for help.

I went over and checked on them. One of the waverunners was completely swamped and neutrally buoyant. They asked for a tow back to the launch. It was less than a mile (probably about a kilometer). so I got out my line (I use mountain climbing rope as my anchor line). I originally tied it to the ski pylon, but I realized that I'd need a steeper tow angle to have any chance of keeping it above water. It kept submarining and I transferred the rope to the tower and even had to shorten the line. It made me anxious but at that point I was committed. I was super gentle on the throttle, and found the 'sweet spot' for towing it was 4mph on my paddlewheel PP display. UPSTREAM against a good 3mph current with a headwind meant that a person on shore would have been walking faster than we were going.

In the end I got him back to the launch.

Loving the Slingshot foil board.

Looks like you've been putting in the time on the foil. I've only ridden mine a couple times this year and none at surf length.

I mean, it's cool and all to glide above the water, but I haven't gotten a ton of 'excitement' from riding mine (just from crashing it!) Part of me wants to get to the point where I have it dialed for surfing but the other part of me thinks it'd be less fun than just using my surf board. Dunno.

Amen to that. There was a post yesterday on FB talking about the driver having a sore neck from watching the surfer... I replied that I'd rather watch wakeboarders and that with the occasional exception, surfers are pretty boring to watch. LOLOLOL
