For the tech savvy people I have AT&T u-verse and pay for the most expensive fastest internet they offer. But I feel like my internet is that of the old dial up system. Everything I’ve read on line indicates that my router isn’t good enough going on 5 years now with the same one,I want to switch routers what is your recommendation on brand model etc.

Also wanna buy one so I don’t have to pay the att rental fee they hit you with.

Thanks for the input

Try connecting your device via ethernet cable then test internet speed. If it's slow that's uverse, if it's fast and slow via wifi it could be interference(try changing wifi channels) or you have devices to far from the wifi access point or something causing it. Any new 2.5 & 5ghz wifi router on amazon with good reviews will do. You want to use 5g which will be faster but has limited distance and bad wall pentratrion.

I highly reccomend the Google Wifi router...it uses nodes to create a mesh network so you will have crazy good coverage all over your home and possibly backyard. It comes with 3 nodes good for around 3,500 sq ft but you can add nodes for additional coverage.

With the app, it's super easy to monitor connected devices, test connections, etc. It will guide you into placing the nodes throughout your home to create the best mesh network.

We stream 4K Netflix with it so throughput is no problem.

All this stemmed from trying to download the update for a Xbox game and it took 3 hours the Xbox is connected with a Ethernet cable. I’ve called att and they “upgraded” my speed and they say there’s nothing wrong on their end. I feel like 2 hours to download a update for a Xbox game is ridiculous.

Uverse isn't that fast, try https://www.speedtest.net/ and test the speed via a Ethernet connection. If you have att&t they may have gig fiber in your area for the same price. I have the 1G fiber connection for $79.. :) I'd stay away from anything google if you can, support both for technical and long term are very very poor. Google tends to pick things up and then ruin them. My whole home is google home automated but I'm total prepared for them to drop support anytime now.. lol..

You said you wanted faster Internet, 1 gig (1000 Mbs) fiber is probably 100 times faster than your uverse (10-20Mbs)... :)

I was going to get a mesh network but got lucky with a single router and relocated to the center of the house (one story). It could be a combination of modem and service which was my case. I now rely on the wireless for so much that I upgraded the modem and went from DSL to cable. When they installed cable, they put in a new dedicated run to their box and I had them install the modem in the center of the house at the TV. I then installed cameras and they all work well. No ADT for me.

Hmmm....hadn't heard this from anyone else I know and I work in Location Analytics/IT.

And I VPN from home on a regular basis.

It could be a PEBKAC issue... [emoji57]

You must be new to IT..lol.

I didn't say the device was bad, rather that google will lose focus and abandon randomly, which in IT they're known for.. :)

Back to my modem/ router combo recommendation lol like this one is it worth a $**t or are there better options out there. That one is what google search says is the best but if I listened to google I’d be broke and probably driving a Nissan Frontier. Yes I’m a nub when it comes too this stuff so I do appreciate the input.

Google does abandon technology, anyone remember Google Glass??

But the fact that they bought NEST and created an ecosystem of home networking, automation & security, I don't think this is a vertical that will fall by the wayside.

I wouldn't bother buying a new router/wifi, the one provided by ATT is good enough. Comes with 5ghz wifi radios, does NAT and anything else you need. You can't disable the routing side but you can disable the wifi. I use it as a pass thru devices so I can do some Nating and AWS VPN tunnels with my ubiquity router and APs but my setup is a little more complicated than a normal user.. :)

Wow cool, I'm 20+ years in firewalls and enterprise networking, Bank One, Allstate, United Airlines, Northern Trust.. Not sure what the point of this is but, have you ever used google support or "customer service"? It's an experience..lol.

At least for the major players in O&G.

I can't really speak to Google customer service...never needed it.

That's a cable modem and router/wifi, that doesn't work with Verse. You need just a router/wifi access point and you'll plug it into the uverse. But before you buy anything you need to test the speed of the uverse connection. It may being having speed issues. Google how to speed test my internet connection. :)

I never said Google didn't have poor customer support....the point was I wouldn't know because I never needed to speak to someone in Bangalore.

Trolling is tiresome, I guess I'll get back to work. [emoji25]

Edo88, good luck with your home setup. I had the Nitehawk referenced by parrot before switching to a mesh network. Netgear makes good stuff, just make sure you do the security updates on the regular.

Thats pretty slow, but good for uverse. Now try the same test over wifi. If the speed is the near the same a new router isn't going to help. You'll need a faster internet connection if you want something faster.

After looking at the pic looks like your testing it via wifi. Make sure you reboot the uverse router setup, then test while close the to router. If you have an Xbox, you should try plugging it into the uverse box and running the same speed test. You want to find out what the max speed you have available from the Uverse side. You'll also want to run the wifi test around your house, see if it's better or worse in other locations. You may just need to move the devices around. :) If you need better coverage you can look at the google mesh, or a newer wifi router link I provided.
