Besides $60? You need to demo both for yourself. Both are a 6.5" woofer with a .75" tweeter. Similar power handling. The JL has a soft dome tweeter and the Kicker has a titanium dome tweeter. Both are built from the ground up as a true marine speaker.

I really don't think it's that big of an upgrade to justify, the JL M series would be if properly driven. Just my opinion. That said, the MX sounds great, but wouldn't swap for just the sake of it.
