Anybody have experience towing with a 5.7 Durango or jeep grand Cherokee? We picked up a 13 Durango this week, just wondering how it will tow our craz. We don't tow much, an hour each way, maybe a couple times per year. For the most part the boat stays at the cottage.

What is the tow rating and how much are you towing?

i think you should be fine depending on how much boat you are towing, i think the craze is listed at 4200lbs.. so with trailer, batteries and gas i would be you are around 6k total. . I had a grand cherokee a while back and it towed really well if i kept it under 5k. Durango is the same but i think the tow rating is higher than 5k.

Tow rating is 7400. I'm just over 6k with the trailer I believe.

Just double check the hitch weight rating on your factory hitch as well as your draw bar and hitch ball.

Good point. I know my draw bar and ball are rated for 10k. I will have to check the factory hitch.

Also keep in mind.. not sure how dodge does this, but tow ratings can include what you pack in the car.. total weight. I think you should be fine as long as you check the hitch, draw bar and ball to make sure it all matches the 7300lb tow rating. A very good rule of thumb however is to get a vehicle that has a tow rating 30-40% higher than what you tow. Meaning if i am towing 5k lbs, i want a tow rating of 7000 lbs (rounding).. I tow 6200lbs and my truck is rated for 8300.

A friend towed his axis t22 with a Durango for a few years and he said it was fine, but when he got a yukon he said there was a big difference between the two for towing. I know this is all obvious, but long story short you'll be fine, but it will push you around a bit more than you would like.

I towed my 08 LSV (book says boat and trailer is 4150 lbs) with a 08 Jeep GC with the 5.7 hemi. Plenty of power. But the lighter weight and shorter wheel base meant the boat could really push the jeep around. Definately doable but probably not the safest setup. Now that I have a 1/2 ton pickup, it is night and day!

I hooked the Mojo up to our 13 Grand Cherokee with 5.7 hemi and auto level.

Much like the above comments, it was plenty of power but being lighter weight and shorter wheelbase was a noticeable difference from pulling with a full size SUV or truck.

I should be fine for a couple times a year.

Using ford raptor for boat towing, ford trucks are great we are also using for emergency roadside assistance service ny (https://www.ritewaytowingnyc.com/roadside-assistance).

Trailer brakes are your friend. Make sure they work properly before you get in a situation where you'll need them.

I'm unhappy with the single axle brakes on ours. Even with a new actuator, fresh fluid & pads. Since we tow with a well equipped full size truck, it's not a major concern. If we had an SUV with under 8K towing, dual axle brakes would be a must for me.

Ford still hasn’t figured out the factory hitch!!
Arrgghhh, looking at adding a second F150 to the stable and the 2019’s STILL only have a 5000# weight carrying and 500# tongue.

Won’t be towing with this one, just a winter ride and bad weather DD.

Still amazed that Ford sells a pickup truck rated to tow over 9k but puts a 5k hitch on it.. Simply stupid. I saw a post about this and checked my Tahoe that has to tow package and i am rated for 10k at the hitch 8800 with the truck. Glad my tahoe was done correctly.

Personally i wouldn't a tow a craz with that for very far. Stopping power, wheel base and control are important to me. I am sure it will tow it given the rating but make sure the hitch is rated to tow 6k or higher. I make it rule of mine to never exceed 80% of the max tow rating on my vehicle.

Huge difference. Even something like a Sequoia or Expedition have too much squat for me. Solid rear axle half ton for me all the way. I personally wouldn’t want anything less than a Yukon with the 5.3L for a Craz or heavier. Our Yukon pulls great but you can feel it get tugged around a bit over bumps and stuff. Next vehicle will be an RST suburban with the 6.2 at minimum. Longer wheelbase FTW.

Won’t touch a F150 for the reasons listed above by Larry. Receiver is rated at HALF the advertised tow capacity. Whereas my Yukon’s advertised at 8500 and has a 10,000lb receiver on it.

Easy fix on my 2018 F-150, and the 3.5EB and 10 speed pulls my SA well.

No towing duty for my 2019 F-150 2.7EB 10 speed.

I towed my Mojo and SA with an F150 and wouldn't go any heavier than an SA with a 1/2 ton.

3/4 ton...FTW! I get better gas mileage with my 250 than I did with my 150 both towing and not towing. I get 15.8-16.1 not towing and 11.6-12.2 towing.

Sure, but shouldn’t have to “fix” anything to begin with

The SA is pushing a 1/2 ton, agreed. It has plenty of power with the 3.5EB and pulls the SA plus 500# lead fine, but the F-150 is very light and suspension is a little mushy and you can feel pushed around on winding roads.

3/4 ton would be more stable for sure, just don’t want a 3/4 ton as my daily driver

You got that right. Ford is really missing the “boat” on this flaw.

followed several towing threads for a while and decided to finally check what's on my truck.
'16 chevy 1500 4x4 LT with the z71 package.
hitch is rated at 1200lbs tongue and 12,000 towing. says v-5 gm.

that said not a big deal to swap out a hitch on a ford BUT wonder how many others out there think it's good and really should pop the $250 for a new one.

Here's the one on our 99 f250 super duty. It's our do all truck. Gasv10 gets 8mpgs whether towing or running round town.
Interesting that its not as stout as the half ton Chevy on a f250. Looks like Ford has missed the boat 4 years.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190925/7075da569ad51308bd6253050260afb6.jpg

factory ford :) or I should say either factory or dealer installed in montana. I can't confirm if it came new with it or gf's mom added it on at the dealer when she bought the rig. I would assume it was factory spec.

I drove the big3 back in 17 when I bought the chevy and if I could rewind the clock even with a subpar hitch factory we would be a 2 ford family. the chevy has a much better ride than either ford or dodge but overall it really hasn't been a trouble free truck. I don't plan on replacing it for another 7-10 years as I don't drive it much(put 2200 miles on it so far this year) but our next truck will likely be a ford.
