On our lake everyone uses pvc pipe anchors made from 2-1/4” PVC made with a “T” connector on top and then a couple of 6” legs out of the T. The main leg is 4’ long with a 45° slash cut into the bottom to make it easier to start into the sand. You just twist and push it down a couple of feet to set it, and we use one on either side of the boat, in a diagonal fashion. I.e. port front and starboard rear. Works perfect and cost about $10 to make.

No need for the augers, they are completely unnecessary IMO. So easy anybody can make them. Just use the proper pvc primer and glue so they stay together.

Like this but without the augers.

Sandbar, what's that?!

Kidding, obviously I know what a sandbar is, but it's not a thing around here. Our big lakes are all shale, so rocky shoreline. no beaching. no sandbars. but awesomely clear water!

Each area requires unique methods. I use a dog spike that doesn't always work because of rocks underneath the sand. I will use rocks which are usually nicely piled by others from previous tie ups. When I do dive rescue the rear anchor is a much smaller anchor and is as simple as a coffee can with concrete. A mushroom anchor to keep the back end from swinging around is all you should need.

A mushroom anchor does not work at our sandbar. The waves from the lake come from one direction, while the wind is often from another. Boats with mushroom anchors end up dragging them all over the sandbar.

The pvc anchor would be great for my buddy and his pontoon boat. I just don't want to have to store a 4' piece of pvc in the boat.

My sandspike is about 16" long and aluminum. It takes up virtually no space, and won't trash my boat or seats. You could make one out of angle iron and plate pretty easily, another buddy did that. If I could weld aluminum, I'd have just made mine.

I got a great deal on a box anchor and the Shore spike off Craigslist. bought them both and never looked back. The advantage of the shore spike is that it works with a built in slide hammer and you can pound it in one handed (because you're usually doing it by yourself and holding the rope with the other hand).

Like most, I use the anchor buddy to be able to have the boat float out to slightly deeper water buy still be able to pull it in. The shore spike came with a bag and fits easily in a bow seat locker. The box anchor and anchor buddy fit in the same locker along with a handful of life vests.

I use a retired section of climbing rope for my anchor line. That goes in the forwardmost bow locker seat. I use aluminum rock climbing carabiners also.


I have 2 or 3 of these in my shed that I've literally never used... I'm sure they'd work fine though.
