I have a 2018 Supra and am looking to buy one pair of tower speakers. Id like to to match the interior speakers so I'm sticking with JL. Im not an audio guy, but do want to hear the speakers while surfing. I'm too focused on not dying when wakeboarding that I won't hear a thing anyway.

M 600/6 amp or 700/5 regardless of what speaker I pick so I can add subs or 8.8" later if wanted.

My question is: will I be disappointed with the MX 7.7? Is the M 8.8 worth double the cost?

I would suggest waiting a little bit. I have a gut feeling that JL is coming out with a better tower speaker.

If so......

1) get new speaker
2)get a better price on 770 or 880

Good advice. Any idea when the ETA may be?

For price,
I can get a pair of enclosed MX 770 for 450. The same looking pair of M880 at 1,000. I'm guessing the MX 770 speakers enclosed are "discounted" already but not the 880s.

I'll be using a 600/6 most likely, so I could grab the MX770 and wait for something new to come out before grabbing another pair of 770 or up it to the 880.

To start with, the MX and the M series are quite different, not just the difference in size you are are looking at between the 770 and 880. So yes, there is going to be a price difference, between an MX and M, not just because of size.

IIRC, JL has a specific T model driver thats loaded in the MX-770ETXv3. If your $450 7.7 deal is not the MX-770ETXv3, then there is a good chance its the in-boat version 7.7. This will certainly add to your price difference. The in-boat version is beast for a large coaming pad and the T versions is for a small tower pod. This will effect mid-bass.

I love my JL tower speakers. I wanna add another pair purely for looks. You won’t be disappointed in going with JL that’s for sure

What do you have currently for sound package?
The 8.8’s will beat either 7.7 with the same power. For the amp choice. That depends on what you currently have.

Right now I have no sound package. Only standard speakers.

I was looking at the m 600/6 to power one pair of 8.8, or up to 2 pairs of 7.7 and subs if desired. I don't think I want subs, but I'd have room if wanted.

I would expect the 8.8's to beat either 7.7s. But the question here is on value. Will I get more value out of half priced MX770s vs M880s. $450 vs $1,000. Amp would be the same.

The 6 chnl would work for one pair of either, with 2 chnl left unused. but would not be a good choice for 2 pair of either. For a single pair, the M400/4 is good and for 2 pair, the M800/8 in the JL line up. Personally, I prefer the Wet Sounds Syn-DX2 for 2 pair of 8'ish inch tower pods.

Lets do this. Post of link to these $450 MX770 and the M880. A good portion of your "value" question has been answered above. The M series 880 are a $1000 on JL site, but the MX770 are more then $450 on the JL site. So hard to answer that question without knowing what you are looking at.

That’s the Mx770 at $450 https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_127859_JL-Audio-MX770-ETXv3-SG-TK.html
Here’s the M880 at $1050 https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_127851_JL-Audio-M880-ETXv3-SG-TK.html

I’m going to give the MX770 a try for price reasons. Running one M600/6 to power (4)MX770s and (2) M880s. I realize this is not ideal and I will not reach full potential on the 8.8s. But I’m not a huge audio guy and can’t swallow 2,500 for an amp and 8.8 tower speakers right now.
