What is the easiest way to change the prop without a puller? What size nut the is on the prop shaft?

Do you want keep the prop coming off or make it a paper weight? There is no easy way without some form of a puller or proper prop removal tool.

I don't see why you couldn't do it with a cheap gear puller. They can be had for less than $20. Or head to autozone, pay a deposit and they'll loan you one!

when I changed mine a few years back I did it without a puller. If I remember correctly I just removed the nut and then gave the prop a few light tamps around the hub (where it goes over the shaft) with a mallet and piece of wood. I just tapped it and it loosened up on it's own. I'm sure that may not be what most experience but give it a try.

It's really 50/50 whether it will come off without a puller. It's a decent investment and nice to have.

I have had success using a harmonic prop puller.

You are a handy man shoebox! Thanks. Stuff I had laying around. It's always handy to have a bucket or 2 of scrap steel bits.

Prop puller worked fine. The hardest part was getting the cotter pin out. I had to beat it out with a crescent wrench and a screw driver. Hopefully I got it back together the right way and the shaft is ok. I hit the rudder a few times, but my main concern was the prop shaft vibrating the whole time I was trying to get the pin out. Oh well I guess we will see today. Also, can you reuse the nylon locknut? I am thinking about removing the prop again to make sure the keyway is not on the sloped part of the shaft putting the prop in a bind. It seems kind of loose after tightening. Plus I need to remove to torque properly. I am scared I may have over tightened the nut.

Also, does anyone know where I can buy a box of cotter pins online? I would like to keep extras instead of going to dealer everytime I need one.

It seems kind of loose after tightening.

What seems loose, the prop? Did it seat back up the shaft to the original mark? Technically, the key does not hold the prop, but rather the friction of the tapers.

You can order prop nut kit that comes with a nut, key and pin.

On a 2017 boat, yeah no issue reusing the nut.

Clever homemade tool, I really like it. Well done.

But honestly you have easily an hour or two of labor into that I am sure, plus the actual c clamp cost.

$90 pro tool is not that expensive.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkNope, about 20 mins. I made the new one yesterday with the 4" clamp while I was waiting for two 10 lb lead ingots to melt.

It's just cutting the piece of angle iron, drilling the 1-1/8" hole and cutting it to a slot, cut the lower end off the c clamp, then weld the 2 pieces together. The hole takes the longest of all that. I didn't cut off the t-handle end and weld the nut on, I want to try it without doing that first.

I have maybe $5 in this. I will have to go buy a couple more clamps to replace these though. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180510/e08fe51b8996be9ca58ad34200f43567.jpg

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkI'm not doing it to sell, it's just satisfying to make a tool quickly and cheaply rather than spending a lot of money on someone else's tool. Plus it's not exactly a pro job. It'll work for me.

Anyone ever have a prop puller pop off and fall into the water? The first time I used one it happened. Luckily it was in 4ft. of clear water with a sandy bottom. I tie a string on it now and tie it off. We are in more murky water with sediment.
Maybe I should position it on the top of the prop? It hasn't happened since.

Lol! I can’t recall ever changing a prop with the boat still in the water. That sounds difficult.

I carry spare parts also in case I lose one of those parts in the water. They are harder to find. I realized after all these years that the DD or the V drive for that matter is much different than a I/O as changing out a dinged prop on an I/O will probably get you back running where you left off whereas the DD and V drives if you ding a prop you probably have other components damaged as well so a prop change may not do a whole lot compared to the work to change it out. I'm also superstitious so the spare prop and extra parts stay in the boat.
